Gem at the Edge of the Everglades
Gem at the Edge of the Everglades
Off the grid for a week! Our group of 4 couples was a bit apprehensive. Beautiful Yellowbird dispelled all concerns. Owners Kathy and Ahmed accompanied us by boat and provided a thorough tour of the property’s many amenities and eco-friendly features. This is perhaps the best-supplied vacation rental we’ve ever experienced. From the dozens of beach towels to the cupboards chock full of paper products, we had only to provide our food and drinks for the week. Forgot to bring extra camera batteries? Insect repellant? You’ll find these and other supplies graciously provided by the owners who respect the fact that we won’t want to leave this beautiful island for mundane shopping trips. The kitchen is beautifully appointed with everything the foodies in our group needed. An ice machine kept up handily with our cocktail-making all week. Four 2500 gallon tanks hold rainwater that we used for everything; it’s the BEST for hair-washing! Solar panels generated most of our electricity although there is a huge generator that serves as backup in the event of cloudy or rainy days. It’s far enough from the house so that it can’t be heard when it kicks on, which it did for a short time during our stay. The bedrooms are identical except for the smaller bed in the 4th bedroom and the bedspreads, bed linens, pillows, towels, etc all seemed brand new. A telescoping window from kitchen to outside bar and gas grill ensured that no one was stuck in the kitchen. And the beach! Powder sand and the best shelling one can imagine. We rarely saw another soul on “our” stretch of beach the entire week. We experienced a mild surf….enough to generate that soothing sound but easy to navigate into deeper waters when we wanted to. Beach chairs, umbrellas, paddle boards and other toys were all available for our use and neatly stored in cabinets on the fully decked ground floor. This floor also has a huge gathering space with a wet bar and plush outdoor furniture. Our group glimpsed key deer, iguanas, tortoises and numerous ospreys and herons. If any of your group, however, is allergic to noseeum bites as I am, be sure and layer on the repellant; they were particularly mean during our visit. It truly felt as though we had the island to ourselves; the isolation may be a bit much for some; not for us. The remote nature of Yellowbird gave us a new awareness for conserving our natural resources. Luxury amidst a tropical natural habitat!

a very special part of the world
a very special part of the world
We spent a week at Yellowbird. Our group consisted of two families with children ranging from 5-8yrs old. We really loved our time at Yellowbird. The owners Kathy and Ahmed could not have been more generous and accommodating - helping us transport all our luggage and groceries out to the island and being so generous with their house and their belongings. We felt truly welcome. The house itself is amazing, simple, comfortable and clean. We loved the challenge of living off the grid. The location is just beautiful with it's proximity to a pretty much deserted beach and incredible wildlife. We spent many happy hours body surfing, bird watching, collecting shells and watching the sun slip below the horizon at the end of the day. One challenge that should not be underestimated was steering clear of the "noseeums" which are quite prevalent at the beginning and end of the day. By the end of the week we had adapted to them but there were a few sleepless nights as we learned to keep doors and windows closed during certain hours. Having access to the boat was good fun and we had a few exhilarating morning fishing expeditions where we caught no fish but returned having seen a lot of nature in action - great feeding frenzies of fish, dolphins and birds and even a manatee on the way home. We found the trip into Marco Island doable but not the 20 minute jaunt that we thought it would be. We would definitely recommend staying at Yellowbird to those interested in experiencing a very pristine and wild part of Florida. Our time out there was very restorative and we left feeling very connected to the natural world. Our kids absolutely loved the experience. We love cooking so the packing in of food and cooking all our meals worked well for us. Had one of us been a real fisherman it would have been unbelievable! We hope to hone our fishing skills before returning so that we can enjoy some of the incredible bounty that we witnessed out there! Many thanks to Kathy and Ahmed for sharing this special part of the world.

The yellowbird at the sea home was a dream come true for our family. We were looking to get away from all the hustle and bustle and that is exactly what we got. This is your own little piece of paradise! The home was better than the pictures on the internet shows. The home was immaculate when we arrived. The mattresses on the bed were VERY comfortable and made for a great nights sleep. The owners take great pride in this home and it definitely shows. The views from the top level were outstanding and breathtaking. The path to the white sand beach is less than a minute walk. The owners provided everything you need, even beach chairs and toys! Our girls loved all the animals, such as turtles, lizards, raccoons, possoms, crabs etc that they found each day. The family loved finding new sea shells from the thousands to choose from on the beach. The owners Kathy and ahmad are super nice people and stay in contact and they are very concerned that your stay is as comfortable as possible. If you looking to get away and soak in Gods true nature, then this is the home for you. Our family will definitely be back!

Perfect Week at Yellowbird on Keeywaydin Island
Perfect Week at Yellowbird on Keeywaydin Island
Our trip to Yellowbird on Keewaydin Island could not have been better. We were looking for a place to unplug from the world and spend a week with our dear friends. We selected the house online and the detailed description and pictures of the house was critical to us selecting the house. The house was perfectly situated for the four adults and five childern in our group, with large private bedrooms, each with a private bath. We were greated with warmth and enthusiasm by the owners to start our journey out the island. We have rented many houses in our past vacation travels and have never had the level of personal attention and care by the owners. For instance we asked about sand toys at the house before our visit, when we arrived not only were there toys there but it was clear that the owners had specifically bought some new toys to match our children's age. The house was stocked with plenty of games and movies. Also, during the week, we had a minor problem with an appliance that we reported to the owner on Saturday night (of a holiday week). On SUNDAY MORNING the owner arrived by boat with a technician to take care of the issue. The description of the listing online and the pictures of the house were very accurate. The house was spotless upon our arrival and everything is very new and in excellent condition. The views are even better in person then they could possibly be online. We also had the boat for the week which we used for several excursions to see the island as well as to visit Naples and Marco Island. The boat was clean, started right up every time and was very comfortable. While on the boat we saw several pods of dolphins which came right up to the boat! The eco infrastructure of the house is amazing with solar panels, coupled with a full gas generator. With not much effort we were proud that we never had the solar batteries slip below 70% capacity. Now for the island. It is one of the most beautiful places in the world, not just the US. Everyday we walked onto a pristine seemingly private beach to a new collection of shells to hunt. Watching the dolphins offshore and the pelicans fishing was an unexpected pleasure. The gulf waters were calm and warm and the sandbar out in front of the house gave the kids plenty of freedom in the water. We would absolutely recommend Yellowbird to a friend or any family or group looking to unplug for the world and get back to nature in an spectacular setting. We will be back!!!!!
