Welcome to the North Shore of Maui, Hawaii!
Maui North Shore ocean-view
Maui by the Sea is a beautiful vacation rental - an ideal ocean-view cottage located on an oceanfront property between Paia and Ho’okipa, on Maui's scenic and exciting North Shore. Our two-story plantation-style cottage has gorgeous views of a sapphire ocean with dancing waves. Simply sit back and relax on the private covered lanai and enjoy the view!
Tropical ambiance with all the comforts of home:
The 500 sq.feet air-conditioned apartment is upstairs (downstairs is the open garage), surrounded by a lovely Hawaiian tropical garden with bamboos, palm trees, gingers, heliconias and fruit trees. The inside is cozy and elegant. A separate bedroom with a queen-sized bed, full bath, and full kitchen complement the layout.
The ocean is your front yard.
Walk out into the front yard, and watch surfers enjoying the beautiful blue waves! Maui by the Sea's property is located right on the ocean, fronting a popular local surf break. The entertainment never stops!
Your cottage is 150 feet from the ocean. (Access to the water is possible but there is no beach in front of the property; it is a rocky shoreline). A sandy beach is 200 yards from the cottage with access for windsurfing, surfing and snorkeling; or if you wish, just sunbathing on the golden sand.
A short drive down the coast takes you to Baldwin Beach, the nicest beach on Maui's North Shore with long long stretches of white sand, crystal clear water, lifeguards, pavilions, and showers.

RENT WITH CONFIDENCE
With 12 years of experience, Maui By The Sea has always operated under a legal County of Maui permit and our current permit is valid through 2021.
BE CAUTIOUS WHEN YOU CHOOSE A COTTAGE
The County of Maui requires that Vacation rentals and B&B's obtain a permit for legal operation. Illegal operators are currently being contacted and serious enforcement and closure of non-permitted cottages will begin January 1, 2013. Then recovery of advanced payments will potentially be difficult for the renter. Legal operations will have their permit number on the first page of their website.

Lovely tree house that is well worth the price. It is perfect for one or two people. Location is convenient to everything in Maui. It is private but not secluded. Landscaping is beautiful and the cottage is charming. Sea views are enchanting. The on-line pictures of the cottage are a true representation of the accommodations. We plan to re-book...and have no reservations about recommending the cottage to anyone looking for simple living in a beautiful setting. Property owners are on site and very congenial without being intrusive...Pumpkin the cat is a sometimes visitor and good host too! Walking distance to the town of Paia and several beaches. A car is advisable for site seeing. I use a walker, at times, and the stairway up to the cottage is manageable and railed. Washer and dryer in unit is a plus as is updated bathroom. Cottage is easy to clean and keep up. Balcony makes a perfect dining area. A great place to unwind and relax.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks Michelle. It was great getting to know you and I am so looking forward to seeing you all in December. Tell Michale the turtles by the shore are waiting for his morning visits!

Nothing but good things to say. Great location, great apartment far enough from town to be private and close enough to get your groceries. With Valerie it was more like visiting a relative than renting a room. A+. Scott ZagarinoRecommended for: Romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks Scott, we can't wait to see you again and hear more about your passionate work.

The photos of this spot (especially the two lounges at seaside) sold us on staying there and we were not disappointed. The cabin is next to the road, but there is minimal noise at night and we ran the air to be cooler at night (we are from New England). It is close to Paia and Haiku (groceries) and served as a magnificent base for our explorations. We were generally home each day by 2 pm and relaxed seaside or on the lanai looking over the garden and house to the ocean (bigger vista). The cabin is very well equipped, clean and cozy. There were beach chairs (Tommy Bahama - brilliant) to use as well as a cooler for packing a lunch and heading to the beach or other sights. Pumpkin is a hoot, very friendly and grew on us quickly (we are not cat people). Breakfasts are big on Maui - our favorites were at Anthony's (epic coffee and do the french toast with Hawaiian sweet bread), Charlies - traditional filling fare, and the Pioneer Inn (killer bloody marys and food.....). We circumnavigated both halves of the Island (north road on west side is worse than Hana Highway by a looong way), including the county road past the ranch to Kaupo and on to Hana (great Thai place behind the ball field in Hana). The road to Hana was alright and not quite as scary as some would have you think if you take it easy and let the locals go by you (they know the road better than you do). This is the place to come if you want to relax, be together and avoid the crush of Lahaina/Waikiki and insanity of mercenary shopping. We watched turtles along the shore, surfers, wind surfers, kiters and generally the whole ocean roll by at our own pace. We found ourselves retreating back to the cabin to sit and relax, chat and decompress. A perfect setting. You can get to the crowded places easily, but here you can leave them behind and get down to the business of relaxing. Restaurants - Mama's fish house is epic - get a reservation and get a view, the view is what you are paying for. We were seated in the bar, but no view - the food is grand, but not as grand as the price without the view. Colleens in Haiku is fantastic (we had dinner there but heard the breakfast is excellent) as is the Flatbread Company (5 stars for both). Gelato downtown is a grand treat as well. We provisioned at Costco and cooked in a fair bit - the kitchen is well equipped and neat as a pin. Highly recommended - we'll be back Valerie!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks Pete, Wow, you have done it all! This is a perfect review of Maui, Paia and all the restaurants! It was a pleasure to meet you both and I hope to see you soon. Aloha

We enjoyed our week at Maui by the Sea. We were welcomed by our hosts, which included fresh fruit and flowers in the cottage. Valerie was very helpful with information about local sites of interest. It's a great base from which to do day trips such as Haleakala crater, visit the shops in Paia or just relax on the lounge chairs watching the surfers and sea turtles.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car.

We enjoyed every minute we spent on site, the cottage had everything we needed for the short stay we had, especially our visits with Valrie. For our purpose the cottage was ideally suited for our trip to Hana, we especially enjoyed Paia Town, wonderful local eating and shopping. We would certainly come backRecommended for: Sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks Craig. I still wish my husband and you could have met.

There's so much to do on the North Shore.... and this is the perfect place to start all the excursions! We love Paia, our day up to Haleakala, another day of just farm tours in the upcountry. This was our 4th week in Hawaii, and the most relaxing of all, and the surfing, windsurfing and waves were amazing! We spent the majority of our last week just watching from the different beaches that are so close. Valerie and Craig are super hosts, our "cottage" by the sea was perfect!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thanks Frank and Connie. It was a pleasure to get to know you. Blessings on your family and farm. Aloha Craig and Valerie

My wife and I spent 2 weeks in March 2011 at Maui by The Sea. It was a wonderful time. The house is really well decorated & perfectly equipped. Every detail has been looked after and we just found ourselves almost better than at home...It was really hard to leave, although we feel privileged to be living in a beautiful city like Barcelona (Spain). The view is astonishing, the privacy complete, the location just perfect. Thanks for the great experience!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you Gilles and Eva, we are so happy you had a wonderful time. Come back soon! Aloha, Craig and Valerie

The ocean view was incredible and it was a wonderful way to cap off our trip to Hana. We will be back whenever we get back to Maui!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

About the owner: Your hosts at the Maui by the Sea cottage: Craig and Valerie Richter Hi, I am Craig: I was born in Seattle and grew up in Spokane, Washington. I loved sports growing-up, especially tennis. I participated in lots of competitions and later became a tennis coach. As a child my parents brought us to Maui several times and eventually I became a Tennis Coach both on Maui and Kauai prior to moving to Hong Kong for 12 years, after which I returned to Maui, met Valerie and have never left. I have been a dedicated tennis coach here on Maui for over 15 years. Bonjour, I am Valerie: I was born and grew up in Paris, France and became a sports photographer, working for a Windsurfing Magazine, Planche Mag, in the 80's. As a Windsurfing Photographer I traveled around the world following the Windsurfing World Cup, but of all the places my work took me, I loved Maui the best and on Maui I finally settled in 1989. We are active in our church and in studying the Scripture. When we aren't looking after our guests, we love to play tennis, hike, ski and travel (though not very often since we have a hard time leaving Maui), and Valerie loves Watercolor and Pastel painting and still takes lots of photographs. We hope you will come and join us in our little paradise, Aloha, Craig and Valerie
Why the Owner Chose Paia:
This is a unique spot, ocean front, close to Paia and very central to lots of activities, protected from the wind. Extraordinary view.
The pictures speak for themselves.
We have been in business since 2000.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The property is very private with its own ocean view. There is a surf spot right in front and close to shore and it is a wild show to watch and hear the surfer catching waves (winter only). Access to a cute little beach is a one minute walk. Perfect for a morning or evening dip.
Once you are done touring or shopping, it is the best to just come home and still have a wonderful and incredible view. This is a very special little nest for honeymooners but also windsurfers and kite boarders.
