Our stay at the Haiku Retreat was amazing! Our family of four, which included a 3 year old and 5 year old thoroughly enjoyed our 8 day stay at the Haiku Retreat. The house not only met our expectations, it exceeded them. The house was extremely comfortable, clean, and very family friendly. We found the retreat to be very relaxing, serene, and absolutely breathtaking! One of my favorite memories is sitting on the deck, looking out at the gorgeous surroundings, and reading a book. The location is not just private and beautiful, it is still close to shopping, restaurants, and the beautiful beaches Maui is known for. Our family spent a lot of time at a nearby "baby beach"; We also spent time exploring the island, snorkeling, and at the aquarium. We would highly recommend this retreat to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway in a beautiful, private, paradise! We are already planning our next trip!Did you find this review helpful? We arrived to the Secluded Haiku Paradise at the suggested check in time. The house was just finished being cleaned and the cleaners asked if we would like some fresh flowers. They picked some right from the many gardens and we enjoyed the smells of gardenia and plumeria through our entire trip. The house was well appointed, the beds were really comfortable, the bathrooms clean and the kitchen had everything we needed plus more. If you come for the holidays there is everything you need for cooking a Christmas dinner or Holiday feast from rice cooker, to coffee grinder and cast iron pans which I love and all sorts of bakeware. Our kids loved the "treehouse" feel and I loved having all of the amenities that a working home offers. I have stayed in some places on Maui that were "off the grid" and I found this to be much more comfortable. There was wireless internet, cable tv and a music player. The yard was awesome, the neighborhood beautiful. Take the time to do a walk through the beautiful streets of the Maui Ranch Estates, it might pursue you to live here, at least these were my dreams. Paia, Makawao, and Haiku towns were all within minutes as were the North Shore beaches. This is also a great location to visit Hana from as it is only 1 1/2 hours away instead of 3 or 4 when coming from the other side of the island. We would recommend this property and hope to return on our next visit to Maui.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The house was in a lovely location with lots of trees and an open grassy area. The neighborhood seemed friendly and we enjoyed the town of Haiku on our frequent visits. This quiet secluded property was a welcome change from the more touristy areas of the island which we have visited many times over the years. We were a party of six. It was our first stay in the upcountry, but we are all familiar with the vagaries of rural life. However, the owner seems to have left many maintenance issues unresolved until our stay, which necessitated the appearance of a handyman on three separate occasions. The dishwasher needed replacing, the garburator needed fixing, the shower was leaking from upstairs to downstairs and a number of screens had to be replaced. This all occurred while our group was renting the house and it was very disruptive. The owner was quite timely in addressing these issues as we made them known to her, but all this should have been attended to before renting the house. These were existing conditions that we discovered early into our stay. Perhaps the most unsettling issue was that of the screens, which although replaced, had holes again chewed into them within 24 hrs. We suspected rats because of the nature of the gnawing and the droppings found in the vicinity. We purchased traps and set them up, but were not successful. There was also evidence of mice in the house ( a nest was discovered behind the dishwasher when it was replaced). Yes, rodents are a part of rural living, but they can be controlled with due diligence. Rats are on another level entirely. That becomes a real health and hygeine problem that needs immediate attention. We feel disappointed that the owner had allowed house maitenance and cleanliness to deteriorate to this level. We would definitely come back to the upcountry but NOT to this property.Owner response: This was an unfortunate experience for these folks and I felt terrible about the maintenance issues that occurred during their stay. The dishwasher was having problems and yes, had to be replaced. The garbage disposal was jammed due to tenant use and was easily fixed. The shower did have a leak and yes, I had to have it fixed. Sometimes anything that can go wrong does and Murphy's Law took hold. Typically every spring there is a rodent bloom and you have to make sure to not leave doors open at night and keep food off counters as critters will get in and make themselves at home. I had terminix come in and completely eradicate the rodent issue after these gusts left. this home is rural, private, in the jungle and a true escape from everything metro and we do everything we can to keep the house in the best possible condition. The house had also been booked solid for the last six months leaving no space to get in and see what might need attention. Thankfully, these guest were able to alert us and we handled everything in a very timely and efficient manner w/ as little disruption as possible.

If you prefer the quiet side of Maui this is the place for you. There are several places to hike and explore on the North side of the island; this home is in the middle of most of them. The owner provides good customer service and is prompt in answering questions or concerns. We did make use of the futon and the air mattress upstairs; our children are adults now so everyone slept in their own bed. Just be aware that the upstairs is also the living/dinning room/ and kitchen. The home is a great value compared to a hotel stay with multiple rooms. The kitchen is well equipped and heavily used during our stay. Take time to get to know the neighbors and their pets they are a friendly group. A must see recommendation is the Haleakala National Park; arrive mid-day for a hike and stick around to star gaze. If you keep your national park entry receipt is good to for 3 days to visit another park on Maui like the Seven Pools on the East side of the island. The North facing shores of Maui are a bit windy this time of year so for beach days we drove to Lahaina or Kihei; both are less than a 60 minute drive. We will plan to stay here again on our next visit to Maui.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We very much enjoyed this home for our family vacation. The house was clean and thoughtfully appointed. Our kids loved the yard and the neighborhood. We took day trips all over the island and were always so happy to return home to this quiet and peaceful environment. We would recommend this home for anyone looking to experience the island from the North Shore.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

There are several things that people need to know before they rent this house that are not mentioned in the description. First of all, there is THE GATE. It has to be opened/closed manually every time you leave. The gate is to keep THE DOGS in. One is a very old dog that wears a collar with a big stop sign on it and the word BITE. The other barks and raises the fur on his back. I love dogs and have raised them but people need to know this before they go there with children. The dogs belong to a house that is maybe 15 feet away from the rental property. This house also has 2 BIRDS. Someone from the rental house must always feed them because they are always over there sitting on the handrails and doing what birds do when they sit around. Had to wash my hands often. They also sit on the screens and watch you while you are eating. Twice they came in the house when we had the door open and were trying to load surfboards. The bathroom is a "Jack and Jill" with no locks on the doors. The other bathroom is up the stairs and this would not have been an arrangement I would have chosen had I known. I just don't like surprises and would have made a better decision had the description included these facts. My son's girlfriend would never let her 5 year old outside and she was not comfortable with him sleeping on the second floor alone with narrow, twisty steps. On the other hand, the bedrooms were nice. The views out the windows were great and there was always a nice breeze. The kitchen was well appointed and easy to cook in. A suggestion: Buy a charcoal grill. The gas was out and I was not about to spend $25 to fill it when we would only use it a few times. A bag of charcoal is a much more reasonable expense.Owner response: This issue has been resolved as current tenant moved as of 5/13.

Look no further, paradise found. From the jungle covered street winding its way up to the house to the banana forest and ginger garden, this home is wonderful. The house is very comfortable and has a unique and beautiful architecture. The beds were comfortable with new sheets, down comforters and nicely decorated. There is a washer and dryer which was really helpful for our family of 4. The kitchen is stocked with every cooking utensil needed from a coffee grinder and rice cooker to full sets of cookware and bakeware. There were lots of children's books and toys for our toddler and there was also a pack and play crib. The nights were dreamy with evening showers and our kids loved watching the gecko's on the windows. The house was clean, gardens manicured and the neighbor Leslie was very sweet and kind. She has two Meyna birds that are tame and they fly around the property chirping and singing Hawaiian songs. Our stay here has surpassed our expectations and we would highly recommend this home. Our favorite experience is waking up to the smell of fresh coffee and sitting out on the lanai for hours, reading, talking and just sitting. We found a peacefulness here that we have not found for years. Our kids loved the neighbors goats and I loved morning walks around the neighborhood after my blissful cups of coffee.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My boyfriend & I stayed at this lovely home for 6 nights over New Years 2012. The Good: The insider of the house far exceeded our expectations. The house is nicely decorated, clean and spacious. Two large bedrooms and a huge porch (Lanai) provided ample relaxation room. The kitchen has higher end appliances than you'd expect for a rental. It's about 15 minute from Paia, our favorite Mana Foods destination, & about 45 min to the beaches & maybe 2-3 hours from Hana (depending on how often you stop on the road to Hana). The Bad: The house is not a remote secluded getaway in that there is another couple that lives on the property & there are many surrounding houses. The couple that lives on the property (or did when we were there) was friendly, but the woman's myna bird almost pecked my eye out the second day we were there. It just flew onto my shoulder when I came outside and when I turned, it pecked me in the face! Just a 1/2" closer it would have been my eye. That along with with the two large dogs the couple had made us less comfortable walking around outside. We are animal lovers, too. One night we came home & these dogs went nuts, barking at us. as we tried to open the gate to the driveway. The on-site neighbor women got annoyed at us because she didn't hear us responding to her "hello." Thereafter, we gave her a wide berth. (Who needs annoying neighbors on vacation?) There are also a few very loud barking dogs across the street (different neighbors). The neighbors said they are kept outside all the time and bark a lot. Lastly, the man who cleans the units was very whiny with us because he arrived at 9am on our last day and wanted us to leave so he could clean. (Check out is at 10am which is pretty early as it is.) He was very nasty and only reluctantly let us stay until our agreed upon checkout time. (Marie warned us her cleaning guy was difficult, but why keep him at all if he is?) Marie was helpful and nice, however. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the house itself is absolutely lovely and comfortable. It doesn't get too hot in this area so sleeping is great. It is fairly far from beaches and tourist sites, so plan an hour's travel to get anywhere, but the coolness and relative quietness is worth the travel time. Just know it's not THAT quiet and beware the myna birds! I'd hate to hear one of the birds pecked a small child's eye out.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
Owner response: This issue has been resolved as the tenant has moved as of 5/13.

We stayed at what we called the 'treehouse' for a Maui wedding on 11-11-11. What a treasure this place is! Quiet, clean, and spacious, it had a skylight in the main living area that let natural light in. It is set on a big, gated property about 5 mintutes off the main Hana road. The cabinets were well-stocked with towels and the bathrooms were sparkling. The downstairs entry and covered porch was a great place to put on and shed raingear. There are wrap-around porches on both levels with lounge chairs. It was very peaceful looking out the windows at the huge trees and colorful landscaping. Fresh flowers in vases on both levels awaited us upon arrival. We were able to comfortably sleep our entire wedding party being that each bedroom could sleep two, there was a pull-out futon upstairs, and the owners supplied two inflatable beds as well. The kitchen was well-stocked with cooking and serving dishes, and was CLEAN! Planning and organizing a Maui wedding and activities for the wedding party meant many details the bride had to deal with. The fact that this home was exactly as advertised and had such amiable owners was a huge plus. We would highly recommend this property, especially for a family or two or more couples traveling together.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

If you're looking for a quiet retreat off the beaten path, this is the place to stay. My boyfriend and I wanted to stay on this side of the island for a couple nights before heading to Lahaina and are so happy we stayed here. Every night we'd listen to music and drink a beer out on the lanai. There is a wonderful breeze so it doesn't get too hot like the West side of the island. The house is much like a 2 story tree house and is fully equipped with everything you'll need (except groceries). While on this side of the island, we checked out Paia, the road to Hana, Makawao, and the lavender farm. Thank you so much Tina and Marie! We had a wonderful time.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We've Visited Hawaii several times over the Years & have always enjoyed our trips to lush green Tropics. So this trip we decided rather than Staying in a Bee hive Condo we would a temp a true Hawaii experience. Wow this was the right place for us. A Beautiful drive through the Jungle ,that we could never get tired of, led to a Paradise away from Home . Located on an Acre on a dead end Street, No lights shining in your windows at night, no trying to find find Privacy like in those busy resorts. The home is absolutely as beautiful as the pictures & very well stocked with all your needs. Good Cable & Internet is easy to set up. I can't think of anything to want for. Our number one complaint, was the Lani. The Lani was Favorite Spot in Maui. Once we sat down for my early morning breakfast we Found it really hard to leave the warm gentle breezes & the sound of the our PRIVATE Jungle. We assure you, you have found the perfect get away & You have found a property were the owners will take care of you, respond promptly & Treat you fairly.( For us this is a very important Factor) PS. Want to prompt conversation with the Locals. Tell them you are Staying in Haiku.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with young children, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

After staying for 2 weeks in the Hilton Hotel in Honolulu this place was heaven for us. The house is set in a very quiet location close to the North coast. A small grocery store is a short drive away, for restaurants and the true shopping experience you will have to drive to Paia or Kahului. The good surfing and windsurfing spots are not too far away. We found the house in a clean condition and all the necessary items were there and working well. However, do not expect any luxury: The equipment and furniture are basic and functional. The garden is beautiful and our kids felt immediately at home. The neighbours are very relaxed, lovely and even shared their fresh fruits with us. Go there if you are looking for a quite and peaceful place. Since it can rain quite often over this part of the island you should be prepared to drive. However, this is a very good base to explore the island or to relax away from it all. Do not go there if you are looking for nightlife, restaurants, beaches in walking distance and 5 star appliances and furniture. We would love to go back as soon as possible.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway.

This house is located too fare away from everything on Maui and surrounded by trees all around so there is no sun at all and so it's very dark inside. Then there are many different pets from the neighbour house (e.g. 3 barking dogs!) around the house, in the garden and even on the lanai . The house in general was very dirty. The windows had not been cleaned for a very long time. You could not see through them anymore and there were old spider webs in every corner. The lanai was manky as well as the furnitures and the barbecue on it. But the most disgusting thing was the kitchen. Everything you touched was sticky and dirty. And there was this horrible stink out of every cupboard with many different opened groceries in them. We first had to wash up all the tableware, pans and cutlery we wanted to use, to clean the windows from the cooking marks of the previous renters, and to clean out a cupboard to store our groceries. In addition, there is no vapor hood and the stove tops did not work properly. We were very, very disapointed of the condition of this house and we do not recommend it at all.Owner response: These people are not the kind of guest suitable to this home. Our home is spotless, thoroughly cleaned after every guest, deep cleaned every couple months and the gardens and lawn are gorgeous. Our neighbor has moved and the Ohana now is available to larger families. There are not animals on the property any longer. Please do not let this review deter you from this home. If you are looking for peace, quiet, serenity, beauty, rest, relaxation, healing, magic and love, this is where you want to be. This is how I feel after every visit. Mahalo

I visited this property with my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in January; was totally enchanted with the setting and the home. The home was clean and the kitchen fantastic. I am a cook and was amazed at the kitchen facilities. We did not use the dishwasher though due to the precautions recommended for usage. It just seemed like more of a hassle than it was worth. The only negative I found about the entire facility was the closet door by the upstairs bath was out of it's tracks and just leaning against opening which could have been a hazard for my toddler grandson. Once I discovered it, I watched him in that area of the living room closer. I would highly recommend this home to anyone who wants something away from the tourist traps and the typical run of the mill accomodations. It is close enough for all other things on the island. We could get to the tourist side of the island in about half an hour (not during their rush hour), which is close enough to do some of the normal things you want to do while visiting but far enough away from all the other stuff you may want to avoid. The on property neighbors were very helpful and friendly. I did not want to leave knowing that I was coming back to about two feet of snow at home.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My wife, daughter (2 yo) and I loved staying at this home in such a beautiful, secluded Upcountry setting. It was a wonderful change of pace / temperature from Kihei, where we had been staying previously. We found the house to be clean and well-maintained, with easy to follow directions provided by the owners. The house is well suited to accommodate smaller children, with both a Pack n' Play and high chair - which made traveling much easier! There were ample beach things, and Baby Beach (adjacent to Baldwin Beach Park in Paia) is a great beach ~ 15-20 min drive away. In addition, the play structure at the Fourth Marine Divisional Marine Park (in Haiku) was fabulous for kids 2 and older (our daughter loved it). Both Haiku and Makawao had some great restaurants (big thumbs up to both the steakhouse and the Italian place in Makawao, and Collen's in Haiku) that were easily accessible by car. And the lanai's, oh the lanai's. Having a beverage, reading a book in the sun in the afternoon breeze on the upper lanai was utterly relaxing. I would definitely recommend this property to friends, and look forward to staying here next time we're in Maui.Recommended for: Families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

It's a good 30 mins from the airport, but worth it. It seemed the beaches on that side of the island had a bit more wind. If you truly want to get away from it all, this is the place. It's very rural, but has cable web access - very nice! We had everything we needed, and we had a 1 and 4 year old - boogyboards, beach buckets, games, high chair, portable crib, etc. We were not in want of anything. There was even charcoal and lighter fluid for the BBQ. The house was very clean, but I can't lie. I did see 3 cockroaches. However, from what I understand, this if VERY common in HI. My Mom asked me on about the 3rd or 4th day if I'd seen any, and I told her, "No". We saw one in the sink that night. I think she jinxed us. Could have been WAY worse. The grounds were immaculate, and we even had our own bunch of fresh bananas growing in a tree outside. The owner was very professional and provided very good instructions; we didn't have any problem finding the place or accessing the home. Whatever you do, don't leave the screen door open. My husband made that mistake, and the house was swarming w/ mosquitoes. Again, this would happen anywhere. It took us over an hour to get into Lahaina, so if you plan any activities there, leave plenty early. The closest town, Paia (or something like that, already forgot how to spell it, and never did figure out how to pronounce it), had plenty of good restaurants. The Fish Market in town was less expensive and less formal, but the food was very good. Understand it was comparable to Mama's Fish house, which was considerably more pricey. If you want to go here, it's more of a resort atmosphere, and you better make reservations well in advance. The kids enjoyed Pizza at Flatbread. We found a store in town. It reminded me of something you'd find in Santa Cruz, CA. If you need any kind of alternative medicine, or prefer organic, this is the place for you. My husband felt quite out of place. Overall - I would stay here again for sure. I would recommend it to family and friends, as a matter of fact, I already have. It is out of the way, however. There is a very small market on the main road, but they don’t have much. One cannot say, let’s take a quick trip into town.” However, I highly recommend this house. Aloha.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
