"Cottage in the Forest"
This beautiful little cottage is tucked into a small forest, with a view of the Hanalei Mountains. Where you will awaken each morning to the symphony of sounds and sights of a peaceful rural mountain setting.
Our three and a half Acre Property is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, and just a few steps across the property brings you to a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains and Kalihiwai River Valley.
Enjoy the endlessly fascinating interaction and play of the resident birds and animals. Chickens, Ducks, Peacocks, Goats, Dogs, Cats and Horses, all co-exist on our property and provide hours of entertainment.
All this is only a five minute drive to beautiful Kalihiwai Bay, where Kalihiwai River enters the ocean. It is our favorite beach, great for boogie boarding and surfing. Also a five minute drive takes you to Anini Beach, a very long beach with a double reef, where you can spend your days: Wind Surfing, Kayaking, Sailing or just enjoying the Ocean environment. Anini also has a large Beach Park.
You will be only 15 minutes from the world famous Hanalei Bay and the Princeville Resort, where you will find the 27 hole Makai Golf Course, the world class Prince Golf Course, and the Princeville Shopping Center. There are two Horse Riding Stables very near by, and the North Shore boasts many hiking trails.
The accommodations are light, airy and beautifully furnished. The claw foot tub in the bathroom is especially charming and looks out a corner picture window on to a private garden.
We love it here and love sharing the unique charm and quiet country atmosphere. Best of all, we are only minutes from some of the best beaches in the world.

We came here for our honeymoon. Very clean, private cottage on a beautiful property. There are chickens, peacocks and horses on the property that come up to the back deck of the cottage -- what a treat! Also, this house is on the northern side of the island, which is the quieter side. That's a plus for me, because there's a lot less traffic and less people around. It's a great place to just get away. If you want to do tons of activities, then you'll have to drive, but driving in Kauai is wonderful anyways since it's so beautiful. The airport is about 45 minutes away, and most everything you can do on the island is within a two hour drive.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

My husband and I stayed but for a brief few days and wished we could have stayed longer! What a beautiful property! Susan provided for all anticipated needs and wants. The bed was comfortably appointed with lovely linen and ample blankets. The view of the ‘backyard’ with its menagerie of horses, peacocks, chickens, roosters, goats and dogs is magical! The backdrop of the mountains shrouded in clouds lends itself to a dream. My husband especially loved the outside grill (he is a chef and took advantage of all the kitchen accoutrement) and grilled fresh fish nightly from the market in Hanalai. I loved the outside shower and the claw foot tub (after long days snorkeling and hiking). We had a restful, peaceful stay (even with the silly roosters!) Thank you Susan for all your attention to detail. You truly have a wonderful property, and we hope to see you again very soon. Adieu!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thank you! It makes us so happy when our guests appreciate our Cottage and our host of birds and animals. We will welcome you back!

Very nice setting. Open, light and airy cottage. Great outdoor shower. Only complaints were presence of two very large dogs and bed linens. Need to replace rather stale pillows with newer and fresher ones. Also, quality of sheets was low and there were no mid-weight blankets--just a very heavy comforter. Also, needed some additional reading lights in the sitting area.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Please read the rest of our reviews!!! We have a photo of my large dog in my personal information, and talk extensively about all of the animals on the property. These guests were the first to enjoy our Newly Reupholstered Chairs, and our Beautiful New Duvet covering the Down Comforter. The new Charter Club Non Alergenic pillows, 2 firm and 2 soft; and the new 500 count sheets from Macy's arrived a few days after they left. (There are many pillows) There were several lighter blankets in the walk in closet. Most of our lights are on dimmers, so maybe they couldn't figure that out. Again...please read the rest of our reviews to get a real feel for the Cottage.

Susan and her daughter were fantastic hosts. The cottage space is great and beautifully appointed. The grounds are lovely and filled with wonderful animals (chickens, peacocks, goats, horses, etc). The bathtub and outdoor shower were wonderful. The cottage came with ample towels, beach chairs, a cooler, and other great thing to enjoy the beach. The kitchen has a hot plate, microwave, etc and there is a new gas grill on the patio so we were able to cook several meals there. The sound of a nighttime rain storm with all the windows open was lovely. Will look forward to returning soon!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

My husband, our young son and I all LOVED this cottage. The location is AMAZING -- set on a beautiful farm surrounded by animals and jungle -- we woke up to rainbows and peacocks out our window. It had everything we needed to eat in several nights. We loved the outdoor shower for washing off all the sand after a long day at the beach. Susan is very sweet and thoughtful and even put out a musical toy for our 20-month old son which he adored and played with every day! Our son loved seeing the horses and other animals outside our window. The location is great - close enough to Hanalei, Anini Beach, Tunnels, etc. and the 4mile drive to the cottage from the highway is magical. Would highly recommend this property and would stay here again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We are just wrapping up from a 10 day visit to this amazing little cottage. The previous reviews were spot on, with this being a very wonderful place to stay while visiting Kauai and is definately a place we would like to return. You wake up to the wonderful sounds of nature, not city noises, but serenity. The cottage is far enough away from the fray to really be able to immerse yourself in tranquility, yet a short drive to some amazing beaches, hikes, and activities.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Well, the Trip is now one of my fondest memories. I am back to work, wishing that I'd stayed longer. Thanks again for the wonderful respite, and relaxed surroundings. The Cottage was a perfect escape and located in the best place for the sights and adventures I experienced. I will often refer back to pictures I took to remind me of your slice of Hawaii--aka Heaven. Warmest regards- RobbynDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

The rooster's internal clocks are just a hair off and peacocks love roof tops - can't expand much, you just have to experience it! The web description and photos do not do this little piece of paradise justice. Really felt like coming back to a home after a hard day of sunning, surfing and sipping Mai Tai's on the north shore. The location is perfect for those who love the north shore of Kauai. Close enough to easily get to the all the good spots, yet secluded away so that you can be to yourselves. The owner's are great and concerned about insuring you have a great experience. Overall, an outstanding experience that helped us meet our goal of being away from it all. We'll be back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Thanks so much! It makes us happy when our guests are happy. : ) Susan & Kim

We found "Cottage in the Forest" via internet research. We did not want the crowded condo scene of the South Shore, but rather something secluded, romantic and secure. This property seemed like a great location, secluded yet easy access to North/South shores and airport (about 45 minutes to airport). The cottage sits on a large, green and lush property with a main house and the owner's studio nearby enough to ask questions if any, but still very private. The property has lots of wonderful wildlife, too - there are some amazing peacocks that perched and strutted right outside our window and we got some great pictures - as if it were a private show for us! Friendly family dogs, too! The view of the mountains, waterfall, and sunrise/sunset is nothing less than you'd expect from Hawaii. The cottage feels very spacious and is tastefully decorated. There was plenty of room to place your groceries (although we usually ended up eating out if we were out and about for the day) - no stove/oven but there were hot plates and a microwave if needed. Susan (the owner) also stocked beach chairs, picnic gear, etc., toiletries, and linens. The property is about 10 minutes down a residential road with other very nice properties. Not a lot of eating/refreshment establishments in the the *immediate* area, but not too far (about 10-15 minutes to Kilauea or Princeville). We got the nice feeling after a day out that we were "coming home and settling in for the night". The bathroom (tub with hand shower) and outdoor shower were very nice. The one issue I had was not specific to the property, but rather due to the lush, forest-like location and the wet season when we were on the North Shore - mosquitos! If you are not sensitive to mosquito bites or can casually swat them away without frustration, you will be fine... I just happen to be really sensitive and couldn't be outside too much, leave doors open, etc., which was a shame - and I took a bath in bug repellent practically every night! Again, not an issue with the property, but rather the North Shore in the wet winter. We had a great time and would not hesitate to recommend this property. If you have wondered about renting a private cottage such as this vs. a larger condo complex, try this! We are so glad we did, and it made for a much more intimate experience of the beauty of Kauai. Mahalo, Susan!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
