Fabulous North Shore Glen Lake Home

Year Purchased: 1967

Why the Owner Chose Glen Arbor

Our family has been coming to Glen Lake since our parents first visited in the late 1940's. They had several dear friends from Hinsdale who had owned properties here for many years. In the mid 1950's, we began renting each year in August from Harford and Mary Field who ran a small, 4 cabin property ("The Woodlands") on M-22 near the house. When the Fields decided to retire to Traverse City, our parents were fortunate to be able to buy the house directly from M/M Field.

The Unique Benefits at this House

As a family we swam, boated, water skied, sailed, biked, picnic'ed, "hung out" at the Yatch Club and goofed around Glen Lake and Glen Arbor for decades in the summer, usually August. We've seen many changes in this still quaint little "village." Our kids learned to swim, boat, water ski, etc. here as well. What a blessing in our lives! Our hearts are here, always. Mom and Dad are still with us, but, sadly, not now able to make the trip up to "The Lake" from Hinsdale. They LOVE the pictures though! A few years back, when we took over the house from Mom and Dad, never having rented the house, ever, we decided to do so in order not only to defray expenses, but to refurbish and update the property. We have done so in many, many ways, but always with one thing foremost in our minds... make as few changes as possible in order to preserve the "cottage" look and feel it has always had. We truly treasure this wonderful place, and hope you will as well. We share it with you in the hope and trust that you will also treasure your time here as a family, that you will be safe and happy here, and that you will care for our "treasured" home.

The location of the home is perfect. Everything pictured and described in the listing was just the way we found it. The owners send information via email well in advance of vacation dates, which proves helpful in acquainting the visitor with this specific property. The owner has also prepared in a booklet with ample information for a newcomer's introduction to the area along with supplying many brochures featuring local attractions and specific calendar events for the year. Anyone should feel "at home". Don't miss the Meaden's "coffee table" book on the table in the corner of the living room that describes many of the area's summer homes including the Lake House and its history! Vacationing in the atmosphere of the Lake House with its amenities and location can be as quiet or active as the guest wishes. We would definitely recommend this property to others.

We've just returned from our third year staying at the Meaden's house and are planning to return next year. The house is wonderful - comfortable, light and fully stocked - and it's location is incredible (walking distance to town, beautiful lake access). The Meadens take great care of the house and we've been pleased to find significant improvements made each year (new dock, new flat screen tv, new range). I highly recommend the Lake House for your vacation in Glen Arbor!

Family Reunion

Guest: Anne (Denver, CO)
Date of Stay: 07/03/10 Review Submitted: 08/09/10

Many thanks to Jay and his family for opening their amazing Glen Lake property. My two adult children and their families (18 mos old granddaughter and 11 year old granddaughter) came from CO and ME to relax, play, and be together. The moment we entered the house we were greeted by the breathtaking turquoise lake. The owners were accommodating, easy to reach, and sincere about us having a memorable time. This four bedroom home is very spacious and laid out with two bedrooms on either side of the living room. There are two sitting areas: we would relax and read by the fireplace or relax and gaze out on the lake. The kitchen is small but has everything you will need to cook and there are great places to go and eat out. The bed configurations were just right for my family: one huge king suite, smaller queen, a bunk room, and a room with two singles. Three of the bedrooms have lake views. A wonderful lake breeze constantly dances through the house creating a fresh outside smell. At dinner all six of us fit comfortably at the drop leaf table. The attention to details throughout the home is equal to what we would find in our home. We felt at home here, welcomed by Jay ( owner) and his family. Every morning someone would be sitting outdoors on a chair or eating at the picnic table. I would play shuffleboard with my granddaughters. Before breakfast we walked on the long dock and the crystal clear water invited us in. Jay will give you several names of marinas if you would like to rent a boat. Our pontoon boat was so much fun with a tube attached to the back. There is a buoy to tie it to. There two marinas a few minutes away and watching young sailors leave the yacht club every morning is very relaxing. We walked to town to get groceries, go out to lunch or dinner, play tennis, shop, rent a kayak or bike, get ice cream ( Pine Cone is really good), or walk to Lake Michigan for an awesome swim and sandy beach. The challenging climb up the Sleeping Bear Dunes was tons of fun. We climbed around sunset and watched the evening slip between the clouds. Cherry picking in season is a must. They are the best in the world. Tour the vineyards and taste the local wine. There were several concerts right in Glen Arbor and the renown music festival in Interocken, MI. This home offers a real vacation atmosphere. We left Glen Lake hoping to return, relaxed, and feeling blessed having experienced this beautiful home. LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! Anne and Family

We rented this home from Jay and his family in late July with some friends. We wound up having a fantastic week of relaxtion, boating, site seeing, and reconnecting with each other. All of our kids loved the lake and we were thrilled with the new dock, clear water, and shallow (safe) water. We all loved roasting marshmallows by the fire (I've never eaten so many smores in my life). Nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes and the surrounding area are beautiful - I'm a new fan of Michigan. We're thrilled that we could be guests of Jay and hope to return someday soon.

My family has been traveling up to Glen Arbor for the past 10 years, but this was the first time we actually stayed on Glen Lake! IT WAS AWESOME! The house is the perfect lake house. Our days consisted of water skiing & boating, walking into town, grilling out, playing yards games and ending each night by the fire roasting marshmallows. What a perfect week of vacation! We highly recommend this rental and plan on returning next year!!!

Our family spent the last week of July ('08) in the lake house. The property and the home perfectly define a Michigan "up north" lake house. The house is unique - full of character - and boasts spectacular views of Glen Lake from many rooms in the home. The water around the dock is crystal clear w. a hard sand bottom. There is a super secure mooring buoy that safely tethered my 24' Four Winns w/o concern. The location is most desireable as the north shore seemed to be the calmest water on the lake but more importantly it is the closest to town (an enjoyable walk or short bike ride). This was especially great for our teenage kids who were constantly back and forth for food and fun. We hope to be back next year!

We had a wonderful time at the Lake House the end of June '08. The accomodations were just perfect for our 2 families. Spent considerable time on the dock, in the boat and on the bluff enjoyng the view. The house is a perfect setting and I would have to say the best in our many trips to Glen Lake. The weather was beautiful and the water had warmed up quite nicely for June. Had several great family discussions around the fire pit enjoying the star lit nights

Our family stayed in the Meaden home in August of 2007 on our first visit to Michigan. We could not have been more pleased. The house is so comfortable and has an ideal location right on the lake and close to town. We rented boats and a trampoline for fun in the water, and in the evenings we rode our bikes to Glen Arbor for ice cream or dinner. One night we cooked dessert over the fire in the lakeside fire pit. Our vacation was the perfect combination of outdoor fun with indoor comfort. We would highly recommend this house to other families looking for a fun but peaceful retreat.

Our family has been coming to Glen Lake since the 1940s. This home has been a family gathering point and sanctuary since we acquired it from M/M Harford Field, the architect and builders, in 1967. The house contains many memories and treasures. We are constantly striving to update, upgrade, and improve the property and the experience. We hope you have enjoyed your stay and will share with us your thoughts and constructive comments. Most importantly, we hope you will consider returning again. Be Safe. Be well. The Meadens.
