Location: Wainiha, North Kauai, Kauai, Hawaii, USA (Four Miles from Hanalei Bay, Two Miles from Tunnels Beach) View Map

Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 1 Bath (Sleeps 5)

Hale Huna("Hidden House")is a wonderful cottage on a hillside near the "end of the road" on North Kauai. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac with only a few other local houses. Very private and peaceful (It is NOT on/near the highway like many Kauai rentals). Perfect for a meditative getaway or honeymoon cottage. Healing and restful.

Beautiful views of green mountains from backyard. Lush plant life, including mango, banana, avocado, coconut, papaya, kukio and lime trees. Outdoor shower sheltered by bamboo bushes. This is a small but charming and tastefully furnished plantation-style cottage with the feel of "real" Hawaii. Within five minutes drive of gorgeous sandy beaches, incredible snorkeling at Tunnels, Ke'e and Lumahai Beaches and world class surf at Hanalei Bay.

The closest town is charming Hanalei, which has restaurants, a grocery store, a health food store, shops, bars and more. Hanalei Bay is famous for its large crescent beach, winter surfing and calm summer waters. The stunning Na Pali Coast is just minutes away (the mountains seen from the backyard are the back of the Pali's/Mountains).

The North Shore of Kauai is known for its lush, tropical, rainforest-like climate and vegetation and low key lifestyle. It's a fantastic place to relax, read, swim, hike, surf, snorkel, eat fresh fish and my favorite, just walking on the beach looking for shells. This is not a standard rental and is in a "local" neighborhood, off of the beaten path, giving it a special and unique feeling of Old Hawaii.

Magical Kauai Cottage on North Shore

Year Purchased: 2007

Why the Owner Chose Wainiha

We always found ourselves being drawn back to the North Shore of Kauai, so we decided to take the plunge and buy a place. We couldn't believe that we found such a cute, vintage cottage. It truly feels like the Kauai I remembered from my first visit as a young kid in 1971.

The Unique Benefits at this House

We love eating the fruit from our yard and getting to know our local neighbors. We spend almost every day at the beach. We can hardly believe that some of the most dazzling places in the world are just a few miles from our cottage: Hanalei Bay, Tunnels Beach, the Napali coast, Ke'e Beach, the Kalaulau Trail and Lumahai Beach.

Owner's Map of Wainiha

We are a family of 4, who live in Avon, Colorado. We feel so blessed to be able to enjoy the contrasting beauty of the Colorado mountains and the tropics of Kauai. Our two sons feel pretty lucky that they get to ski at home and play in the ocean in Kauai.

    • We imagined our ideal island home, and the picture that came to mind is a place with lots of windows to let the breeze cool the room and scent the air with fragrance of plumeria and pikake. No need to insulate against hot or cold, the construction is beautiful in its simplicity and function. It fits so well in its surroundings that one would think it grew out of the earth. We imagined the home is surrounded by a tropical garden of flowers and ferns and fruit trees. Frequent rains keep it lush and clean. Jungle sounds come from the shade deep in the back of the yard and beyond. When evening sets in, the daytime jungle sounds begin to disappear as nighttime jungle sounds start in. And we imagined this home is located someplace where one will have to see some of the best scenery the island has to offer before arriving at its doorstep, or when doing a grocery run: several-thousand-foot high mountains with waterfalls, taro fields, driving a road with one-lane bridges barely above gentle green rivers and that takes you past beaches that are on several "best beach" lists. We found the home we imagined when we found Hale Huna.

    • This was our 3rd trip to Hawaii, and our best. Hale Huna was perfect, it was very well appointed and was a great location. We will be back for sure.

    • My husband, son & I stayed at Hale Huna for a week in July and had a marvelous time. The house is conveniently located to all north shore activities and beaches while at the same time private and relaxing. The house is beautifully decorated and appointed with all the comforts of home. My son really enjoyed coming "home" from the beach every day and using the outdoor shower! All in all, a great rental experience from booking to check-out!

    • We spent ten glorious days at Hale Huna -- every aspect of the house is ideal. Tastefully decorated, nice linens, plenty of ceiling fans (which combined with the tradewinds keep the house nice and cool, well-stocked with beach toys, located in a quiet neighborhood but still conveniently located to many very nice beaches. And the property manager is responsible should something go wrong -- the propane for the BBQ expired during our stay and was replaced the very next day. If you are looking for a comfortable and relaxing stay on the north shore of Kauai, I would highly recommend Hale Huna.

    • The perfect north shore base camp. Just enough of all the right things. Fearful of rain, got sun every day instead. Favorite things: Dinner with a marvelous lush green garden decor. Grilling fresh ahi (more than once). Kalaulau trail and the Hanakapi'ai falls (at least a 100 calorie burn). Secret falls trip (kayak and hike). Hideaways beach along with 20 & 30 foot high waves (awesome to see such relentless power). Hanalei "Okolehao trail (another 100 calorie burner if you reach the End-of Trail sign). The Ultimate Seventies CD.

    • Everyone should have the opportunity to escape to Hale Huna. This hidden house provides the perfect garden cottage paradise from which to enjoy the tropical wonder of Kauai. The plentiful windows allow the resident to enjoy the outside green belt and the warm Kauai breezes as one sits in a very well appointed living room and adjacent dining room. The furniture and accessories are very stylish, comfortable and appropriate to the island. This is a beautiful, comfortable and exciting house in which to vacation. It is worth it to treat yourself to the experience.

    • What a special place on Earth! This was our first trip to Hawaii and, thanks most to this treasure of a home, it was spectacular. We enjoyed a perfect family vacation; a different beach every day, mangos and bananas from the back yard, sea kayaking in Hanalei Bay and seeing green sea turtles while snorkeling. We loved being so close to the "end of the road" in a real neighborhood with the neighbor's sweet dog, Mowani, wandering through whenever the grill was on. I think Hale Huna would be ideal for any kind of retreat. As mentioned, it was the center piece of our perfect family vacation with two adults and two children. Artists and authors would find solitude and inspiration here. Honeymooners will find privacy and beauty here. I really think this home has something for everyone. As we drove around Kauai, we came to appreciate just how special our stay at "Hidden House" was... this is not one of the cookie cutter subdivision houses you might find in Princeville or Poipu. This is a truly unique and special home that you will want to return to year after year. We do. What more can I say? We give this property the Highest Positive Rating possible!!
