We just spent 10 nights at Hale Huna for our first visit to Hawaii on Kauai. In some ways we don't want to post a review, since it's letting the world in on a secret we'd rather keep to ourselves. But we owe it to the owner, Kristi, who is preserving this beautiful plantation house in simple and authentic fashion. She was the most professional, responsive owner we've had the pleasure of communicating with in a long time. If you enjoy staying in a resort with valet service and a swimming pool for the kids, search elsewhere. But if you like staying in a place that feels like the summer home your favorite uncle used to invite you to visit when you were a kid, you're getting warmer. Hang out in the hammock chair and soak up the brilliant colors of the tropical vegetation surrounding the house. Shower off the salt outside and listen to a shama bird serenade you in the quiet. Enjoy comfortable beds, high-thread count sheets, soft towels, artistic lighting, well-appointed kitchen. Love to cook like we do? There's not much better in life then buying fresh mahi-mahi at Dolphin to grill up at Hale Huna. Garnish with fresh mango from a farmers market, while watching the evening light on the mountain ridge from the back yard. Oh, and 5 minutes to Lumahai, 7 minutes to Tunnels, 14 minutes to Kee. Mahalo nui loa Kristi

From the moment we arrived we loved this cottage. It was in absolutely perfect condition, extremely clean with a private patio and beautiful yard. We were so impressed with the decor...extremely warm and beautiful. It didn't seem at all like a typical rental property, but rather a well-loved and cared for abode. Thankfully it was quiet, great for cooking, reading and simply enjoying. In fact each day we looked forward to coming "home" to the place and taking the spectacular (and unique for us) outdoor shower :) The location for us was quite wonderful since we love the north shore of Kauai. We were able to see sunsets at the end of the road, hike the Napali Coast twice (it's only a few miles from the place and probably one of the most scenic hikes in the world!), enjoy the beaches, etc. When we were ready to have company it was only a short drive to Hanalei for dinner and Princeville and Kilauea for more food and sight-seeing. It wasn't even a bother to drive to Lihue for the helicopter ride. Again, we always looked forward to going home. Even sleeping was perfect-great ventilation and tranquil. In short, Loved our stay and would go back without hesitation!!!!

We have stayed on the North Shore of Kauai (Princeville and Haena) seven times. We previously stayed primarily in condos. We found this property available for our full 11 nights at the end of July just a month out from arrival. It is not on the beach but close enough to the North Shore beaches (a short walk to the Hanalei Colony) to give you a head start on the folks coming out of Princeville. We found parking at Haena beach park (for snorkelling at Tunnels) arriving by 9:00 a.m. with no problem. The cottage is Immaculately kept and decorated. Full kitchen with modern appliances. Comfortable beds and furniture. The garden in back is gorgeous. There was all the beach gear we needed. No AC was not a problem at all! We ate fresh Apple Bananas from the property every day and ripened avocados we picked for guacamole and salads. Again, considering what rentals and resorts go for on the North Shore this was one great value. Highly recommended for a family. We felt right at home immediately. Thanks Kristi and Craig.

Me and my wife stayed in Hale Huna during mid October and definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in the most beautiful part of Kauai and live in a secluded area yet close to the best beaches, hiking and towns on the North Shore. The garden was great with bananas, avocados and papaya! Perfect for a couple who wants a quiet, modern yet island styled get away but has 2 extra bedrooms for bigger families. Lots of great guide books and interesting reading at the house as well on Hawaii fishes, geology and films shot here. Loved the outdoor shower as well! We would definitely come back!

First off, if you're coming to Kauai, the North Shore is the most relaxed and beautiful part of an already beautiful island. We spent a very relaxing and incredible 10 days at the Hale Huna. From a very airy and welcoming decor to the nice touches of an outdoor shower and ceiling fans everywhere. Outside, fresh mangos, bananas, avocados, guava, papaya! Every morning we would go outside and collected mangos the gentle breezes had coaxed down. Grill to cook fish, great beach stuff - our 16 year old learned to surf - he was stoked. I would recommend this house in a heartbeat and we hope to be back in the near future. I even made a video in the backyard to incorporate for a music video and it came out GREAT. Owners were very easy to work with and made sure everything went well. Went beyond that THANKS! The Grants from NM

We stayed in the house for a full week and had a wonderful time! The house is a perfect get-away from all the daily stress. The bedrooms were great - we slept like babies the entire time! The living room and dining room were very roomy and comfy. The kitchen is fully stocked with all cooking utensils and therefore, we cooked almost every day at home. The outside grill was great to grill our fresh seafood that we bought in Hanalei. We were visited by roosters, hens and little chicks, as well as the friendly neighborhood dog. And plenty of colorful geckos to watch outside. It was a great vacation and can highly recommend the house to everybody! It is close to Hanalei and plenty of beaches. We are looking forward to stay there soon again!

My husband, 16 month old son and I rented Hale Huna for a week in January. My husband and I had vacationed on the north shore when we first started dating and were excited to return. We had an amazing stay. The house was quiet, peaceful, beautifully furnished and located minutes from our favorite beaches. It was a perfect setup that allowed us to play in the sand and waves every morning and return for lunch and a quick, quiet nap before heading back out for an afternoon adventure at the beach or in Hanalei town. We would definitely stay here again.

We imagined our ideal island home, and the picture that came to mind is a place with lots of windows to let the breeze cool the room and scent the air with fragrance of plumeria and pikake. No need to insulate against hot or cold, the construction is beautiful in its simplicity and function. It fits so well in its surroundings that one would think it grew out of the earth. We imagined the home is surrounded by a tropical garden of flowers and ferns and fruit trees. Frequent rains keep it lush and clean. Jungle sounds come from the shade deep in the back of the yard and beyond. When evening sets in, the daytime jungle sounds begin to disappear as nighttime jungle sounds start in. And we imagined this home is located someplace where one will have to see some of the best scenery the island has to offer before arriving at its doorstep, or when doing a grocery run: several-thousand-foot high mountains with waterfalls, taro fields, driving a road with one-lane bridges barely above gentle green rivers and that takes you past beaches that are on several "best beach" lists. We found the home we imagined when we found Hale Huna.

This was our 3rd trip to Hawaii, and our best. Hale Huna was perfect, it was very well appointed and was a great location. We will be back for sure.

My husband, son & I stayed at Hale Huna for a week in July and had a marvelous time. The house is conveniently located to all north shore activities and beaches while at the same time private and relaxing. The house is beautifully decorated and appointed with all the comforts of home. My son really enjoyed coming "home" from the beach every day and using the outdoor shower! All in all, a great rental experience from booking to check-out!

We spent ten glorious days at Hale Huna -- every aspect of the house is ideal. Tastefully decorated, nice linens, plenty of ceiling fans (which combined with the tradewinds keep the house nice and cool, well-stocked with beach toys, located in a quiet neighborhood but still conveniently located to many very nice beaches. And the property manager is responsible should something go wrong -- the propane for the BBQ expired during our stay and was replaced the very next day. If you are looking for a comfortable and relaxing stay on the north shore of Kauai, I would highly recommend Hale Huna.

The perfect north shore base camp. Just enough of all the right things. Fearful of rain, got sun every day instead. Favorite things: Dinner with a marvelous lush green garden decor. Grilling fresh ahi (more than once). Kalaulau trail and the Hanakapi'ai falls (at least a 100 calorie burn). Secret falls trip (kayak and hike). Hideaways beach along with 20 & 30 foot high waves (awesome to see such relentless power). Hanalei "Okolehao trail (another 100 calorie burner if you reach the End-of Trail sign). The Ultimate Seventies CD.

Everyone should have the opportunity to escape to Hale Huna. This hidden house provides the perfect garden cottage paradise from which to enjoy the tropical wonder of Kauai. The plentiful windows allow the resident to enjoy the outside green belt and the warm Kauai breezes as one sits in a very well appointed living room and adjacent dining room. The furniture and accessories are very stylish, comfortable and appropriate to the island. This is a beautiful, comfortable and exciting house in which to vacation. It is worth it to treat yourself to the experience.

What a special place on Earth! This was our first trip to Hawaii and, thanks most to this treasure of a home, it was spectacular. We enjoyed a perfect family vacation; a different beach every day, mangos and bananas from the back yard, sea kayaking in Hanalei Bay and seeing green sea turtles while snorkeling. We loved being so close to the "end of the road" in a real neighborhood with the neighbor's sweet dog, Mowani, wandering through whenever the grill was on. I think Hale Huna would be ideal for any kind of retreat. As mentioned, it was the center piece of our perfect family vacation with two adults and two children. Artists and authors would find solitude and inspiration here. Honeymooners will find privacy and beauty here. I really think this home has something for everyone. As we drove around Kauai, we came to appreciate just how special our stay at "Hidden House" was... this is not one of the cookie cutter subdivision houses you might find in Princeville or Poipu. This is a truly unique and special home that you will want to return to year after year. We do. What more can I say? We give this property the Highest Positive Rating possible!!
