- Great restaurants and shops and most of the activities are within a mile or so of town, However, you will not want to miss a trip to Kilauea Volcano just 95 miles from town and in continuous eruption since 1982, Very often at night the firey red lava flowing down the mountain and into the sea is clearly visible, Another trip that should not be missed is to the summit of Mauna Kea with it's huge observatories at 13, 796 ft, (If you are an early riser the sunrise from the summit is indescribable!)
