"Though I was tentative, I investigated the site, and saw the
fee was not too high. I saw that I could put the information in there
correctly (all the local brokers had WRONG information and never updated their
data bases no matter how many times I tried to tell them) and I could
respond directly to the tenant without interpretation from an intermediary. So
I tried it. Within a few DAYS I was receiving inquiries. It was winter when I
joined and these inquiries were for MAY. Now, understand, the Hamptons are
generally a SUMMER playground for New Yorkers. These inquiries were coming from
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, etc. It was wild. I was able to tell
by how our communications went, if the tenants would be appropriate for the

"In 2007 my partners and I purchased (2) beach resort area
rental properties as investments. One property is located in Avon, NC in the
Outer Banks of NC and the other is located in Ocean City, New Jersey. The
property in Avon was formerly a rental property and was being managed by a
large local property management company from Avon, NC so we opted to have them
continue handling the rentals and taking care of our house. In 2007 they
managed to bring us $42,000 in rental income of which they took a 10%
commission for their efforts. In 2008 rentals were very slow and there were
several open weeks throughout the summer. We equated some of the decrease in
rentals due to the slide in the economy and the fact that folks were not going
to vacation. But In an effort to help improve our rentals we opted to sign up
with VRBO.com as a secondary means of advertising our property and generating
rentals. Within 3 days of listing our house on VRBO.com we rented one of the
peak summer weeks in July. Just a few short weeks after I had successfully
booked our house for the remaining weeks for the summer and weeks in October,
November and December. The success of VRBO.com led to our decision to
discontinue our relationship with the local property management company and I
now handle of of our rentals for the Avon property myself. In 2009 our rental
income will approach $55,000 for the year and the best part is we now don' t
have to pay a rental commission of 10%. We already have reservations for 2010
and expect rental income to go over $60,000. Our Ocean City property has had
the exact same success as our property in Avon. We purchased the OCNJ house
brand new in 2007. Being a new house the property had no prior rental history.
We signed up with several local rental agencies in OCNJ in 2007 and were able
to salvage a dismal $25,000 in rental income that year. In late 2007 we signed
up on VRBO.com and began taking reservations for 2008. Almost immediately we
began getting inquiries and bookings were very close behind. By April of 2008
we had the house fully rented for the summer and fall season and had increased
our rental income to just over $40,000. Beside the benefit of increasing our
rental income and decreasing our commission costs VRBO.com also allows me to
personally involved with who is renting our house and making sure that they are
happy with their stay. Being involved with any business will always add to its
success. Despite the hours of responding to e-mails and taking phone calls to
discuss policies and procedures it has been a lot of fun working with our
guests and making sure that they would come back each year. Thanks VRBO.com! We
look forward to many more years and maybe more listings."

occupancy rate and superb guest relationships! Our beachfront condo on the
quiet west end of Panama City Beach was a treasure in itself for it's perfect
location and comfy atmosphere. But as "rookie" owners, we were timid

of months of narrow, resort-only competition and lack of general satisfaction
with the rental agency we used, we decided to strike out on our own. We never

we had a website and became members with the chamber of commerce and
experienced good success with our summer schedule. We also advertised in the
chambers printed guidebook. When the number of inquiries began to diminish,

"Five years ago someone suggested that I create a vacation rental from the
barnhouse I inherited on my mother's passing. Since the barnhouse is only two
parcels from the geodesic dome, which I also inherited and live in, it seemed
like a way to bring in much needed income, since I was already past retirement
age and had minimal social security and little prospects for continuing to
travel doing voice workshops. I live in the Colestin Valley just off I-5 about
8 miles south of Ashland, Oregon, the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival,
which was founded in 1934, the year that I was born. Ashland attracts people
from all over the world to the Shakespeare Festival, which runs 9 months of the
year from February through October. Nestled on the east slopes of the Coast
Range of mountains, Ashland's charm and quiet beauty affords many sight-seeing
opportunities in addition to its many theater and live music productions. The
"off-season" never really occurs in Ashland, because winter is one of
its most beautiful seasons. Crowning the city is Mt. Ashland, tallest mountain
in the Coast Range, with a city-owned Ski Lodge serving the many skiers,
snow-boarders, and scenery lovers who travel up Mt. Ashland Road to the top of
the mountain. Colestin Valley rests on the south slopes of Mt. Ashland and is
only minutes away from the Ski Lodge. So . . . Because Ashland is replete
with charming bed and breakfasts, a beautiful restored historic hotel, and many
comfortable motels, I knew I had to come up with an eye-catching name that
would get attention and appeal to the types of people I felt I could serve in
the way that would work for all of us. And, since most of the accommodations in
Ashland were what I call "Martha Stewarted" to the max, the
BadTaste *B-n-B* seemed the perfect moniker for the three story former barn
that had been converted into a very livable and unique dwelling.
"Comfortably furnished in eclectic 'thrift store' (see something you like
make any offer)" was the phrase that introduced the Barnhouse. I felt that
it would attract people with a sense of humor and with the kind of relaxed
demeanor that would appreciate the beauty of the Barnhouse in its quiet and
secluded natural setting. I'm happy to say I was right. Reading the
"Comments" on the vrbo website is the proof. I will always be
grateful to the person who suggested connecting with Vacation Rental By Owner.
It has provided the opportunity for me to continue to live in this beautiful
valley, to care for the land that I intend to pass on, to provide for myself in
creative and supportive ways, and to meet travelers from all over the world (my
last guests were from Ireland). And their beautiful children. And their

"VRBO Vacation Rental By Owner has been a godsend for me. My
husband and I purchased a condo on the beach in St. Augustine, Florida four
years ago and we knew we had to rent. We had been told the condo management
would take care of the rentals. WRONG!!!! So we started to look for ways to
advertise and rent. VRBO became quickly obvious and the correct decision. We
did not find any other modalities or sites nearly as successful. What has
increased our bookings even more, has been suggestions from VRBO on how to better
