"40 minutes north of the Kona airport, lies an oasis of a property on the North Kohala coast. Arriving at the late hour of 10:40 pm, Kalia was at the end of the road waving a flashlight for me so I could find my way to my home for the next 6 nights. That was the beginning of my solo retreat at this special hale. As I grabbed my luggage, and made my way to the front door, I was amazed at the blanket of bling in the sky. I have never seen such a beautiful night time sky. The nocturnal birds were chirping, and the scent of the garden hibiscus punctuated the slight breeze and made me feel like I had just landed at heaven on earth. Staying here is like being in a cross between a botanical garden, a bird sanctuary, and a planetarium! Words cannot even do it justice.
The accommodations are even better than described, and has every amenity you could possibly want in a home away from home. The bed was unbelievably comfortable (and I'm very picky), everything was extremely clean, well decorated, and the outdoor shower was a new experience and a welcome treat after spending time at the nearby world class beaches. I also spent a lot of time on the spacious and comfortable lanai, lying in the hammock with a book, gazing at the beautiful ocean, and interacting with the fun geckos. (They do like it when you give them water I figured out!)
This is the perfect destination for being 15-20 minutes from white sand beaches - my favorite is Mauna Kea Beach, or as a home base for anywhere you want to travel on the island. It's away from vog, has a perfect climate, and a refreshing gentle breeze.
It's evident Kalia really cares about her property and her guests, and takes great care of her gardens and her homes. I was able to look at her 2 bedroom hale just up the hill, and it's equally as gorgeous, if not more so. I'm hoping to bring some family members back and rent both homes for a family vacation. If you want peace, tranquility, and beauty, at an affordable price, there is no better location on the big island in my opinion. I'll be back often I hope! Mahalo!"
