  • Villa Madu is the best value luxury villa in Ubud. It's also GAY FRIENDLY!

"This is actually my second visit to Villa Madu. I have stayed at many villas in Ubud over the years but if I am with a group of 4 or more people, this is my absolute favourite. It is 5 mins walk to Ubud Central Post Office and Ubud Market. However, when you are within the grounds of Villa Madu you really think you could be in a beautifully manicured jungle. The view is beautiful from every room in the house and the little Joglos at the bottom of the property. The staff were wonderful. Dewa and Wayan are always ready to help with any requests no matter what. Nurdi the wonderful cook was so happy to accommodate us with friends' sometimes odd dietary requirements. The photos on this site don't do the villa justice. It really is a very special place with that old time bali feel but with all the modern comforts required. I definitely recommend this place for families (modern and traditional) and for groups of friends. I'd like to have my next birthday event at the villa."

  • Ubud Treasure

"While at first it was very difficult for us to send payment via bank transfer, those initial fears became completely unfounded. Not being able to pay with visa was a concern; heck, the whole world deals with visa! What we discovered through this experience was that we were dealing with warm, friendly, down-home people in Ketut and her staff. The payment method was a reflection of the care and meticulous detail that was invested in ensuring a vacation second to none. As we had stayed in Seminyak for a week, the Villa Tirta's driver, Ariya, picked us all up and transported us to the waiting luxury of this beautiful villa about 15 minutes outside of Ubud. Luxury was an understatement as we were completely awed upon arrival! The grounds are meticulously kept: the organic garden, the fabulous pool and its decking, the family temple with accompanying daily offerings ceremonies, etc. The villa itself is beyond luxurious: a spacious, clean and extremely well-stocked kitchen, three large beautiful bedroooms with fans and A/C and a large inviting dining area. The upstairs bedroom complete with a huge balcony / terrace was where my wife and I started our day with coffee and tea; it was an excellent getaway in itself for yoga meditation, internet browsing, etc. Ariya, our driver was so accommodating as he waited to take us wherever we wanted to go. Daily trips to Ubud or day-long excursions were thoroughly enjoyed in the air conditioned comfort of his spacious van. Illuh, Petu and the rest of the staff ensured that our breakfasts were always scrumptious and prepared us for a day of activity or leisure. The traditional western breakfasts or the wonderful pineapple, coconut or banana crepes were mouth watering! Dinners were also available by Illuh and the girls upon demand; they were definitely the best meals we had in Bali from the gado-gado, to the chicken satay and pork, fish and chicken dishes to the vegetarian dishes - there was something for everyone in our group. There is absolutely no doubt in our minds that we would return to this villa if we ever planned another trip to Bali. The staff of the villa Tirta Indah treated us like family and facilitated one of the most enjoyable vacations ever!"

  • Luxurious but Wild, Escape from The Mundane, Get Inspired

"I live in NYC. This place is Opposite Land. Rumah Cahaya will obliterate your stress. Need a creative sabbatical? Stay here for a month and explore the interior of Bali. There's a rainforest on one side of the villa and rice paddies on the other. We woke to bird calls and luscious views, and fell asleep to gecko chirps and faint gamelan drumming--beautiful and hypnotic. On the second day, my niece said,"WHY are Maya's breakfast eggs so good?" And then we saw the chickens and hens running through the paths of our rice paddies. That curving path is like something out of National Geographic for Kids. My two young kids saw lizards, ducks, roosters, groundhogs, mice, frogs, butterflies and snakes (butterflies are bigger than the snakes). Note: Rumah Cahaya is not for the squeamish. They’re all here, creatures great and small. Everything is benign. There’s an ongoing symphony of chirping and burping and some of it comes from the corner of the living room. The villa’s best features are the open air master bathroom and the eagle's nest, a tiny tower. Every night I’d bathe under the starriest skies—no light pollution here. After a really hot day, you bathe in the sultry perfume of frangipani. Upstairs, from the eagle's nest, you sit at an L-shaped desk while peering into a lush rainforest. The ordinary world falls away. I couldn’t stop taking panoramic shots of the rice paddies. At night if you leave the tower windows and doors wide open, a little bat might swoop in and out. My son loved that! The staff: Maya makes amazing breakfasts but she’ll let you know (by being late) that she prefers 9am to earlier. Finally we just had her make us lunch instead. She’ll also take small parcels of laundry and return them next day. Juli, the informative driver and responsive house manager, aims to please. One day he took us to the market and I left a bag of caramel cakes somewhere. He saw my disappointment and the next day came with other caramel cakes, refusing compensation. (One day, though, Juli’s brother pinch hit and charged us an arm and a leg. So, substitute Juli at your own risk!) The owner Bruce has tastefully created a luxurious home yet still in keeping with the local vernacular--wooden doors, transoms, cabinets, and wardrobe are carved with Balinese motifs, and altars and recessed nooks with Hindu statuary grace the property. My kids had so much fun exploring it all that they didn’t even realize they were learning. The same goes for me."

  • Wonderful Whitney Bungalow

"We, my daughter, my husband and I spent 5 beautiful days at Whitney Bungalow in February. The house is lovely, the pool terrific and the location quiet, but within a short drive to the centre of Ubud. We loved every minute at this beautiful home. We would highly recommend having Made, the house manager and cook, prepare your meals. She made us a fabulous breakfast every morning and an equally good dinner every night. We couldn't wait to get up in the morning to the plate of fresh fruit that was the best we have ever had. Made's husband Jesse and her nephew, were our drivers for the 5 days we were there. They are both very good drivers (you will want a driver given the chaotic traffic in Ubud and the surrounding area) and very reliable and nice, as well as good tour guides. I would highly recommend this lovely rental property and wish it were closer, so we could return again and again."
