  • Luxurious but Wild, Escape from The Mundane, Get Inspired

"I live in NYC. This place is Opposite Land. Rumah Cahaya will obliterate your stress. Need a creative sabbatical? Stay here for a month and explore the interior of Bali. There's a rainforest on one side of the villa and rice paddies on the other. We woke to bird calls and luscious views, and fell asleep to gecko chirps and faint gamelan drumming--beautiful and hypnotic. On the second day, my niece said,"WHY are Maya's breakfast eggs so good?" And then we saw the chickens and hens running through the paths of our rice paddies. That curving path is like something out of National Geographic for Kids. My two young kids saw lizards, ducks, roosters, groundhogs, mice, frogs, butterflies and snakes (butterflies are bigger than the snakes). Note: Rumah Cahaya is not for the squeamish. They’re all here, creatures great and small. Everything is benign. There’s an ongoing symphony of chirping and burping and some of it comes from the corner of the living room. The villa’s best features are the open air master bathroom and the eagle's nest, a tiny tower. Every night I’d bathe under the starriest skies—no light pollution here. After a really hot day, you bathe in the sultry perfume of frangipani. Upstairs, from the eagle's nest, you sit at an L-shaped desk while peering into a lush rainforest. The ordinary world falls away. I couldn’t stop taking panoramic shots of the rice paddies. At night if you leave the tower windows and doors wide open, a little bat might swoop in and out. My son loved that! The staff: Maya makes amazing breakfasts but she’ll let you know (by being late) that she prefers 9am to earlier. Finally we just had her make us lunch instead. She’ll also take small parcels of laundry and return them next day. Juli, the informative driver and responsive house manager, aims to please. One day he took us to the market and I left a bag of caramel cakes somewhere. He saw my disappointment and the next day came with other caramel cakes, refusing compensation. (One day, though, Juli’s brother pinch hit and charged us an arm and a leg. So, substitute Juli at your own risk!) The owner Bruce has tastefully created a luxurious home yet still in keeping with the local vernacular--wooden doors, transoms, cabinets, and wardrobe are carved with Balinese motifs, and altars and recessed nooks with Hindu statuary grace the property. My kids had so much fun exploring it all that they didn’t even realize they were learning. The same goes for me."

  • Beautiful Villa in a quiet area

"Beautiful villa, great location, friendly staff. We spent a full month in Rumah Belibis and loved it. Nice pool, big comfortable bed and bathroom, a moat full of fish, loved the views of the rice fields and palm trees out back, and found the antics of the ducks endlessly entertaining. Wayan, the housekeeper/manager, was very helpful and always available by phone/text whenever we needed anything and came in to clean twice a week. Wifi is by rechargeable stick and worked very well. Don’t waste time looking at the TV channels, or channel, but their DVD and book collections are enormous. The kitchen doesn’t quite live up to the impressive care and attention to detail that was paid to the rest of the house, but is good enough. There are a number of good, reasonably-priced restaurants within a 10-15 minute walk, although that walk can get a little dull after a while. Café Vespa is only about 5 minutes away and is a popular lunch option. They were also building a small café just outside our door while we were there that will probably be open soon. We loved the fact that you could go out the gate and be in the middle of the rice fields within seconds - you can walk north to Terra Cotta Restaurant in 15-20 minutes, or cut across the fields to reach Jl Sanggingan the back way and make it a loop. There are a number of small shops and a cheap, efficient laundry within a couple minutes’ walk, and Bintang Supermarket is only 15 minutes away. It takes 30 minutes to walk to Ubud Palace, then another 5-10 to get to most of the restaurants and bars. There are plenty of taxis that will charge 50,000 to Ubud (maybe less if you are good at bargaining), or you can rent a moped for 24 hours for the same price. Almost every day we spent an hour or two wandering back roads and fascinating rice field paths, choosing among an infinite variety of routes. If you are looking for night life this might not be the ideal location, but if you are like us and prefer the quiet streets, good views and endless opportunities to roam among the rice fields then this place should suit you perfectly."

  • Wonderful villa in great location! Highly recommended.

"We cannot say enough positive things about the wonderful week our family of 6 adults had at this magical Bali (Ubud) villa. Robin was very responsive and easy to deal with to get the booking in place, and even sent us a long list of recommended places to eat. She and her Bali team also seamlessly took care of our pick-up at the airport - which is where we met the incomparable Wayan (Bali's best driver and tour guide!!!). Wayan took such wonderful care of us from the moment he picked us up - giving us the local tour and guiding info as we travelled to the house. We used his services most days we were there - for more local and day trips to Blue Lagoon, Gunung Kawi temple, Tampak Siring Holy Spring temple (a must see - we were lucky to be there during purification rights), and a variety of shopping, restaurants and cultural activities as well as simple guidance on groceries and banking. He made our whole week so much easier - our personal Bali tour guide! Thank you Wayan. We miss you and will never forget our time with you. The house is even more impressive than is described here or that the photos can do justice to. Just know that it is every bit as wonderful as the photos and other reviews depict. It is set in a very rural surrounding (rice paddies on one side, jungle on the other) less than 2 km down the road that takes you to the main intersection in Ubud - and close to lots of great restaurants, shopping on Hanoman Street and Monkey Forest Road. Wonderful private refuge - beautifully and lushly landscaped, wide verandas with a variety of chairs and comfortable sofas and outdoor ceiling fans, and lots of space to share or have privacy at any time. Great for families or groups of friends. The treasure of the property was Made who cooked our breakfast every day, took care of our rooms, and was just a joy to be around each day. We looked forward to her arrival every morning :) She seemed as interested in us as we were in her and we had many great conversations with her while she worked away. We tried lots of new foods and fruits - including mangosteen. Delicious food. Made was also available for us to retain for other meals and we had a couple of wonderful dinners that she prepared. She kept an eye on us - making sure we had any directions we needed (paddy trail to town) and making sure we could navigate safely. Much gratitude to Made for everything she did in taking care of during the week. We will remember you and your graciousness. Thank you."

  • A great villa in a great location!

"We (couple) stayed in the villa for 5 nights in July. The villa provides very comfortable accommodation and is well placed to explore the areas around, including central Ubud, on foot, while being far enough removed to provide peace and tranquility. Plenty of good places to eat within walking distance. The villa is located high on a ridge with great views in all directions. Ibu Putu, Ketut, Wayan and family looked after us very well, including pick up and drop off at the airport, a day trip by car, and breakfast every morning. Not to mention carrying our bags up the stairs! All up, we can totally recommend the villa, its location, and the support given from the time you arrive at the airport until you leave."
