  • Luxurious but Wild, Escape from The Mundane, Get Inspired

"I live in NYC. This place is Opposite Land. Rumah Cahaya will obliterate your stress. Need a creative sabbatical? Stay here for a month and explore the interior of Bali. There's a rainforest on one side of the villa and rice paddies on the other. We woke to bird calls and luscious views, and fell asleep to gecko chirps and faint gamelan drumming--beautiful and hypnotic. On the second day, my niece said,"WHY are Maya's breakfast eggs so good?" And then we saw the chickens and hens running through the paths of our rice paddies. That curving path is like something out of National Geographic for Kids. My two young kids saw lizards, ducks, roosters, groundhogs, mice, frogs, butterflies and snakes (butterflies are bigger than the snakes). Note: Rumah Cahaya is not for the squeamish. They’re all here, creatures great and small. Everything is benign. There’s an ongoing symphony of chirping and burping and some of it comes from the corner of the living room. The villa’s best features are the open air master bathroom and the eagle's nest, a tiny tower. Every night I’d bathe under the starriest skies—no light pollution here. After a really hot day, you bathe in the sultry perfume of frangipani. Upstairs, from the eagle's nest, you sit at an L-shaped desk while peering into a lush rainforest. The ordinary world falls away. I couldn’t stop taking panoramic shots of the rice paddies. At night if you leave the tower windows and doors wide open, a little bat might swoop in and out. My son loved that! The staff: Maya makes amazing breakfasts but she’ll let you know (by being late) that she prefers 9am to earlier. Finally we just had her make us lunch instead. She’ll also take small parcels of laundry and return them next day. Juli, the informative driver and responsive house manager, aims to please. One day he took us to the market and I left a bag of caramel cakes somewhere. He saw my disappointment and the next day came with other caramel cakes, refusing compensation. (One day, though, Juli’s brother pinch hit and charged us an arm and a leg. So, substitute Juli at your own risk!) The owner Bruce has tastefully created a luxurious home yet still in keeping with the local vernacular--wooden doors, transoms, cabinets, and wardrobe are carved with Balinese motifs, and altars and recessed nooks with Hindu statuary grace the property. My kids had so much fun exploring it all that they didn’t even realize they were learning. The same goes for me."

  • Utmost comfort, hospitality, and luxury at Villa Satori

"We spent a wonderful 5 days and 4 nights at Villa Satori in early December. From booking to saying goodbye, everything about this property was five stars. Kasey was friendly, easy to contact and very helpful when booking Villa Satori. She's got great personal notes for the Ubud area on things to do, places to eat, etc. As a TV producer who is always planning travel logistics, I spent this holiday going with the flow. Villa Satori has everything that makes going with the flow easy yet productive at the same time. They have staff that are local to the Ubud area and Bali in general that are able to set up massages, day trips, etc very efficiently. The two wonderful staff members, Wayan and Ketut, are excellent. They go above and beyond in every aspect to make sure your time is comfortable. They are incredibly warm and friendly and keep the villa spotless. I wish I had them around for my own house! There is nothing more relaxing than waking up to the delicious made to order breakfasts by Wayan. If you follow it up with a in house massage (they've got a massage table or two they set up in the villa), your morning will be pretty much perfect. The villa itself is gorgeous. It's obvious the villa is a labor of love for Kasey as well as her home away from home from the details. Each room is sizable, beautifully appointed, and every bed is comfortable. It's a short walk away from the hustle and bustle of the center of Ubud, but set far enough away that you can escape it all as well. It is peaceful, serene, and you will see more of the real Indonesian life away from the crowds of tourists. It would suffice to say that everyone in my family (my parents, brother in his twenties, and husband) were sad to leave and wished we had more time to spend at the villa. When we return, we hope Villa Satori is available because we'd stay there again in a heartbeat."

  • Awesome private, quiet villa

"We just stayed at Robin's villa for 5 days. It was absolutely wonderful. We were a party of three, me, my husband and our 15 year old son. The pool is great, clean and cool. The villa is on the edge of a river valley forest, great for bird watching. The entrance to the villa is surrounded by rice paddies. The grounds are exceptional, many places to sit, relax, and deflate from stress. There is one room with air conditioning, which worked for us as the second bedroom was cool at night. We rented scooters, if you want to eat in Ubud you need transportation or its a pretty long walk. You could do it by bicycle. Wayan the driver and manager really helped us out by being an exceptional driver, very knowledgeable and friendly. Made the villa keeper is super nice and cooks really nice meals. We loved this villa's staff. We usually spend more on villas but this one is a true gem especially for the price. Highly recommended."

  • Good for the right renters - GREAT STAFF!

"The Villa Di Abing is perfectly located on Jalan Jembawan in the center of Ubud but on a primarily residential street, which is quiet yet within easy walking distance of most restaurants, shops and artistic events. The Villa has a great many positives and some concerns depending on who you are and what you desire in a Villa. It is situated on a short well-lit lane off Jembawan right next to the reasonably good Sang Spa 2, which is on Jembawan so it does not interfere with the tranquility of the Villa’s location. The first great positive is the Staff! Iluh, the house manager, is superb and can assist you with just about any request you might have from finding things, places, and services to getting things packed up that you may have purchased and want to try and take home on the plane! There are two housekeeper-cooks, one of whom, Noman remained with us for the entire month and succeeded in fulfilling our breakfast desires and cleaning needs with the extra delights of flowers on our bed every day and cold drinks and refrigerated neck towels whenever we returned from our forays into the Bali world. The one time we went down to the pool, she and her assistant carried a cooler with drinks and cool towels so we would not have to make the long journey up and down for refreshments. Nguruh the gardener keeps the pool and lush vegetation perfect and the night watchman Gedey is always ready to help and will go to pickup dinner food from any restaurants in the area that provide take-out but no delivery! The two master bedrooms are large and the indoor/outdoor bathrooms are interesting and functional with the outdoor showers one anticipates in Bali. The smaller third bedroom is up a steep staircase (almost a ladder) with a nice full bathroom with shower down one level that serves also as the dining room – sunroom bath. It is not an appropriate bedroom for small children as the stairs are quite steep or for older persons unless they don’t mind climbing steep stairs to use the toilet. This third bedroom is not as luxurious as the other two and the bed is a Queen not a King. If you are in Ubud for a short stay to primarily eat breakfast and tour each day spending minimal time at the Villa then Villa Di Abing can be ideal. You can easily walk to restaurants in the evening, shop the market or boutique stores, attend cultural shows with little effort. The Villa is literally steps from a set of two connecting paths that take you quickly from Jalan"
