"We stayed here as a couple for 3 nights. The machiya is as described on the site. It is a beautifully constructed house both inside and out, very well-maintained with top-notch furnishings. Our favourite part of the house was the much-vaunted hot tub, perfect for a long soak after a day of hard walking. The location was perfect, within a short walk to Gion and to the main street. We cooked several meals and also did a few loads of laundry. Everything is very "self-service", as is to be expected, but the owner was easily contactable by email and responded promptly to emails both before and during our stay. The only possible downsides were first, that the staircase between the ground and second floor is narrow and steep, and open on one side. While that is fine for adults I would hesitate to bring my young kids on a trip here (though to be fair, I do note that the owner has said that a safety gate can be installed at the top of the stairs). Second, the toilet is not on the same floor as the bedroom, so a trip to the toilet in the middle of the night did necessitate my stumbling down the same narrow steep staircase in a half-awake state. Third, there is quite some noise from traffic passing along the street, even at night. I am a light sleeper and would not have been able to sleep well without earplugs. My husband, though, is a heavy sleeper, and had no problems whatsoever with the traffic noise! Having said all this, I accept that this is part and parcel of staying in a traditional property. We did enjoy our stay thoroughly and would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to experience a stay in a machiya."
