  • Even better than the photos

"Kamogawa-an is even more elegant than the photos on the website each detail, the dishes, furnishing, the futons, the rock garden, the cypress bath is to die for! There are many different places where you can sit and view the Kamo River. Of course the location is great, near Kyoto station, and many of the temples. We loved it here!"

  • Accommodating

"We arrived late at night after our flight was delayed and the shuttle service closed, we had to take a taxi so finding the address was a challenge. The instructions emailed by Junco made access easy and we settled in quickly. Our first time in Japan and Gion House, lower level was a perfect introduction to a new way of living with the modern and traditional married in luxurious comfort. The kitchen very well equipped for our breakfast needs, we ate out the rest of the time as there was so much to do in Kyoto and the Gion area. We highly recommend this accommodation: quiet, comfortable and delightful. Two couples fitted snugly."

  • Perfect place to call home in Kyoto

"We were very lucky to be able to call Senraku House our home for 3 weeks in Kyoto. It is an amazing and beautiful hidden gem. Last year, we stayed in Rieko and Thomas' wonderful, larger Gion Kyuraku machiya with our adult children but this time, it was just the 2 of us, with my brother coming to visit us for a short time, and Senraku House was perfect. It was very special to live in this traditional and sparkling clean machiya house, with its tamami floors, low eating table, comfortable futon sleeping mats, and tasteful decor, and yet, have every modern convenience - washer and dryer, large bathroom and shower, WiFi, fully equipped kitchen, air conditioner, and big screen TV. Everything is labeled in English so there is never a doubt as to how to operate anything. Senraku House is conveniently located in central Kyoto and it is easy to walk, take a bus or the subway, or catch a taxi to anywhere that we wanted to go. Rieko and Thomas are another reason to stay at Senraku House. This time, we had primary contact with Rieko and she is just amazing: so warm and friendly, helpful, full of great suggestions (she told us about the best place to see cherry blossoms, the best craft fair, and a small local restaurant for really good soba), and always just an email away if we had any questions. I know she must be as kind to everyone who stays at Senraku House but she certainly made us feel as though we were her special guests. We love Kyoto and Rieko and Thomas with their comfortable, beautiful properties make us feel as though Kyoto is our second home. We can't wait to go back. Thank you!"

  • A great introduction to Japan

"We just returned from Japan so I need to take a moment and write a review. VBRO users have helped me to find so many great places and this is no exception. It is unique and was a wonderful way to start our Japan vacation. In a hidden street, quite secure, quiet, and peaceful. My husband had never slept on a futon, so a great experience for him! I was glad we took a shuttle straight to the address, however, after that, no need for a taxi or shuttle as the train is so close. Loved Arishiyama. Rode bikes, and albiet, a bit crazy at times, very fun. There were not a lot of dinner places open, which was fine, however, if you are looking for one, the place right next to the train station is very good. We ate there twice. Loved the sukiyaki. Also, enjoyed the yakitori place that was recommended. Very fun and sat at the bar. A true adventure. We LOVED the bath. Very relaxing at the end of a long day of walking. The kitchen is very small...which was fine by big cooking when on vacation...but perfect for warming up a snack. Can't really see it for children, but for my 60 year old husband and myself (50) was perfect. Enjoyed it very much. The owner is very kind, yet you feel quite private and serene."
