  • Great Location

"It's taken awhile to write this review; thought I had done it before. It was a great location, about a 5 minute walk to the station. Great little shopping mall nearby. A convenience store a couple blocks away. Quick subway trip to anywhere, really. The Miyasaki museum is a couple of stops away. Makoto-san was very helpful; met us at the station and walked us to the apartment. He was very efficient in the preparation for our visit, making sure we knew the train lines etc. We had a tiny mix up in the meeting, but communicated through Whattsapp. I'd stay there again."

  • A Fun Stay for Us with the Kids

"This Machiya house worked out well for our family (4). We wanted the children to get a sense of what it must be like to live in Kyoto. By staying in a Machiya house we felt at once part of the neighborhood. The house is well located, clean, and has the basics. The stairs are a little steep but our four year old was able to climb up and down pretty easily. The owner has put in a nice soaking tub into the unit that comes in handy after a day of walking from temple to temple."

  • Everything was so well thought out

"The machiya was immaculate and spotless! Everything you need (aside of food) was provided. Hats off to Rieko and Thomas for planning the restoration so well and making the machiya a lovely place to stay. My mother commented how new the tatami floor smelled. It's because they change the tatami mats every year (that's unheard of because of the expense) and shows the extra mile the hosts go to maintain the quality of the home. The layout of the home worked well for our family of five. My husband, my two kids (14 and 11), and I slept upstairs while my mother had the downstairs room with its own toilet. My mother was happy not to have to travel the stairs every night. When you 're used to having at least two bathrooms in the states, the extra bathroom was very appreciated. A supermarket (where you can also buy freshly prepared food) was a half block away, and the beautiful Kiyomizu Temple is in walking distance. The machiya was roomier and more comfortable than any hotel with the added benefit of a kitchen and a combination washer/dryer. We had a wonderful stay and hope to be able to visit again!"

  • Authentic Kyoto experience

"I stayed here for a conference with my family (two children aged 4 and 6) and we had an excellent experience. The house is in a quiet location in a lane way and in the middle of Kyoto. Bus, train and subway are easy to access and Kazuya's recommendations for local food and travel options were always good. We stayed in December but the townhouse was warm in the living area and the bedroom when the air conditioner was turned on for heating. Kazuya was very helpful with communication before the visit and met us on arrival. The house is clean and everything works. The wifi is a very good idea too."
