  • Perfect Home Away

"We walked into the Gion House and it embraced us immediately. Traveling from L.A. through Taipei, to Kyoto - this turned out to be the perfect spot for our week to slow down and rest. The space is perfect for two. The renovations that have been done to this property are exquisite in every regard. The winter weather was not a problem at all, as there is plenty of heating both ambient, and floor heating that kept us snug (We are from southern California so anything that drops below 65 degrees F, is "cold" for us!). The Host, Tanaka-san was also exactly what we would have wished for in a Machiya host: highly accessible at any time by text, very responsive to every inquiry, and yet unseen throughout the week's stay. We are independent travelers so our mode is to settle in and make every new place our home. We were able to do that here, very easily. The space is well designed so that every aspect of short-term living is taken care of - from needs one may have for cooking at home, to having access to laundry facilities, to being situated in a spot that gives visitors a real feel for local neighborhoods. Market for food shopping is close, plenty of restaurants, plenty of places for tea/coffee, and lots of temples and shrines in easy walking distance. Train station is about ten minutes by taxi and runs about 1000 yen. There are also buses within easy walking distance. The best for us: Kenninji Temple - just a half block away, around the corner sits the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto. In all, a fantastic place to stay while in Kyoto. Our plan is to visit again, very soon and we will send friends and family as well!"
