  • Amazing property that embodies the beauty of Kyoto!

"I stayed at the Gion House for 5 days with my husband and 2 children (2 and 7 years old) and we were so impressed. The house itself is absolutely beautiful and all the materials used in construction (remodeling) are of the very best quality. The high-tech bathtub system, toilet, W/D is so impressive. But the Japanese detail and design is the best feature of this michiya. I spent so much time just taking pictures of this fantastic property. So happy I stayed here and not in a traditional hotel- I really felt like I was coming home each night after a long day of sightseeing. We ate all our breakfasts here at the house and a couple dinners. The kitchen is small but surprisingly fully functional - it even includes a rice maker! We did several loads of laundry (necessary with my messy kids) and we just love the W/D - wow! And the futons were so comfortable and the pillows are amazing. We loved the pillows so much that we were thinking about buying some to take home. We priced them out at the local Dept store in Kyoto and they cost $150 each!! Too rich for my blood but wow, I will never forget sleeping on those plastic pillows, they're amazing!! The windows are amazing! We were just stunned at the high quality windows and appliances. Also the bathroom was great - I never skipped a bath or soak in that amazing tub! Again, it's a small tight bathroom but everything is so neat and perfectly designed - it works very well. I was a little concerned about the steep stairway and my kids but we kept them downstairs and it wasn't an issue. All I can say is that you will not be disappointed if you stay at this property - it's amazing in every way"

  • Mitch, Gail, Dick and Jeanne

"We rented the Gion House for 2 weeks in late Oct. The location is perfect, in the center of Gion, 2 blocks from Gion Corner, the Geisha district in Kyoto. We used the Lonely Planet Kyoto as our guide and were able to see everything we planned. The machiya is well equipped and we prepared several meals at night when we wanted a more western menu. The area around the Gion house is covered with historic temples and shrines. Kininji ji is a block and a half. There is a small market 2 blocks away and open 24 hrs for food for breakfast and dinner. A 7/11 is 2 blocks away for access to an ATM. All types of transportation, busses, taxi and subway, are easily reached by a short walk. Since there were 4 of us we found taxis to be as economical and more convenient than busses. The staff at Another World, Gion House's management in Kyoto, was very responsive to our requests for assistance. This trip was the best we have ever had and we would highly recommend the Gion House if you wish to visit Japan. The Japanese were always kind, patient and helpful in spite of our lack of Japanese language skills. If you want to experience a completely different culture, unlike anything in the West, but are concerned about the language barrier and unsure about where to stay, book the Gion House and go. You won't be disappointed. In fact, you'll never forget it!"

  • Fantastic property!!!

"The Apple House is the ideal property for experiencing Kyoto and Japanese living. The home is traditional Japanese, cozy, clean, well maintained and located on a winding road that runs along a river. The home provides all your basics and then some for moving right in, without having to buy a lot of extras. The owner provided exceptional customer service from picking us up at the station to removing trash and changing the bedding during our 3 week stay. The buses and trains are convenient, as is access to a 7-11 store with English newspapers and an ATM that provides foreign currency exchange (not readily available in many parts of Japan.) We loved this home and would recommend it to anyone who wants an authentic Japanese living experience."

  • Great place to stay!

"Kazuya was a great host - he provided us with instructions for the taxi driver (in Japanese) to get us to the house when we arrived, suggestions for places to go and things to do and even arranged for another taxi to get us back to the train station in time to get us to our next stop. The house was as described and in the photos and we loved having the portable wireless. Now we intend to get one whenever we travel abroad!"
