"We are a family of 3 and when traveling we like 2 bedroom apartments and all the conveniences this provides with a kitchen, washing machine and space. Staying in the upper level at Gion House was fantastic. This lovely 100 year old machiya is right in the heart of the Gion, the old part of the town. A fabulous location where we could easily wander the old alleyways and take in the ambience of this old part of town. We would not have had the same experience staying say at the Kyoto Station area which we found pretty soulless. The house is surrounded with a huge variety of great restaurants at all different price points and we followed a few of Curtis' recommendations and they were fantastic. The Shabu Shabu restaurant around the corner was one of our dining highlights of the trip.
The house comes with everything you want including free Wi-Fi and cable TV. My son did not mind sleeping on the tatami mat bed and our bed was so comfortable. The pillows - were to die for - beautiful feather pillows. Saki who welcomed us and showed us around was on hand for any enquiries we had and lovely to deal with. I would highly recommend this machiya for an authentic stay in Kyoto. We also found it to be in an excellent location to see and travel to all the sights"

"We have been to Japan a few times. But stay in a place like Gion House brings the experience up to another level. We stayed in the hart of Kyoto ant yet is was a quite place that one can rewind after a busy day visiting all the sights.
Gion House is a lovely place to have, very roomy for 4 to 5 people, The kitchen is well equipped. One can make a full meal out of it but that means if one still have the energy to cook after a day of touring all the wonderful sites. The bathroom is also tastefully done. Dipping in the hot bath will help to rewind after a long day out.
We would this place to everyone. We shall return the next time Kyoto is calling."

"My two grandchildren, aged 9 and 8, my daughter and I, enjoyed staying 8 nights at Amy's house. The booking process was remarkably easy and, with Amy's help, ran to a perfect plan. Amy has added many personal and welcoming touches together with soaps, shampoos etc. We could not believe how convenient the location was and walked to most things of interest, markets, shopping areas, and 2 minutes to Lawsons for quick supplies - on a relief day we opted for Bus 206 which took us to just about every other destination. Do use the bus service, like everything else in Japan it is so efficient.I would not give another thought to a hotel when you can add value to your holiday with an experience such as this."
