This is followed by the rainy season which occurs from June through November. The heavy rains make traveling around difficult and this is considered the low tourist season. One of the most famous beach destinations in the Philipines is Boracay. The area is known for its pristine white beaches and shimmering turquoise waters. It is a slice of pure paradise. Other famous beach areas include El Nido, Pagudpud and Puerto Galera.

The Banaue Rice Terraces in Batad are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These ancient terraces have been the mainstay of the local agriculture for a number of centuries. Other cultural sites include the European-style colonial town of Vigan, the beautiful Baroque churches in Manila and the old colonial buildings that are landmarks in the various town and cities. In Quiapo, you can see a unique example of a basilica constructed entirely from steel. It is the only one of its kind in Asia. There are several significant historical sites in Manila including Rizal Park and Intramunos.

If you enjoy nature and the outdoors, the Philippines has a wealth of attractions for you. You can explore the forests and mountains on ancient trekking routes. You can join a whitewater rafting excursion at Davao. There are many excellent rock climbing sites. Some of the most popular can be found in El Nido and Wawa Gorge.

The main international airport is located in the capital city of Manila. The airport hosts a variety of international carriers from neighboring Far East countries as well as Australia and North America. There are frequent commercial flights into Manila. For travelers from Europe or the United States, if you cannot find a direct flight, you may need to consider flight routings via Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tokyo or Singapore. There are regular regional flights from all these destinations to Manila and most have convenient connection times with other international destinations. To get from Manila to some of the other islands, you may need to use a combination of domestic flights and local ferries. In the cities, there are buses and taxis but in more remote parts, public transportation is very limited. Because of the dense populations in the main cities, there are often traffic restrictions. When staying in the cities, it is best to make use of taxis or public transportation to get around, as navigating the streets in a rental car can prove to be hazardous.

The Philippines is a unique travel destination. It has beautiful beaches and mountains as well as many places that attract those with cultural interest. It is definitely a destination for the more adventurous type of traveler. If you are used to the glitzy resorts of the Caribbean, this is probably not the type of destination for you.
