Our stay at the Sooke River Cottage was nothing short of amazing.
"As soon as we stepped onto this property, our breath was truly taken away. The outside of the cottage has a spanning yard space and a wraparound deck that is fitted with a picnic table, a barbecue, some lounge chairs and even a hot tub! The far end of the yard has steps that lead down to the Sooke River. We spent many days trekking up and down the river or just sitting near the bank admiring our incredible surroundings.
I hesitate calling the Sooke River Cottage a cottage at all because it is more like a dream home! Seriously, Gary and Meredith, I want a copy of the blueprints ;). The house has one master bedroom with a washroom just off of it, a spacious sitting and dining area and a loft with another bed and sitting area. The kitchen was fully-equipped with everything we could ever need. All we brought along were a couple spices and we were set for a week of good food! The decorating was impeccable and was filled with all kinds of subtle details that made the cottage feel like a real home. I certainly could have gotten used to living there!
When we weren't taking advantage of the amazing home and yard, we ventured out into the charming town of Sooke that has all the necessary amenities and some very friendly locals. If you go to the Village Foods Market, remember to mention you're a tourist - they give you a discount! We also found an off sale liquor store called Buffy's which we used when the provincial liquor board store was closed. The cottage was about an hour's drive from Victoria, and we enjoyed doing some sightseeing there as well.
One of my favourite things about the trip was visiting the Sooke River Potholes. It was only 1.5 kilometres from the cottage, and we were pleased with all the hiking we got to do there. We spent almost an entire day at the Potholes, hiking around, swimming, and just enjoying the scenery. It's a picture perfect place that is just steps away from the cottage - what could be better?
For beach-goers, we were about a 30-40 minute drive from the Juan de Fuca straight/ West Coast. We visited the popular French Beach, but my favourite spot was Sandcut Beach. It wasn't as busy, had a small hike from the parking lot to the beach, and we spent an entire day going up and down the beach enjoying the mountain view - fantastic!
Our stay in Sooke was truly phenomenal. Gary and Meredith were amazing hosts who were incredibly welcoming and kind. I hope we will be able to return again soon. You gotta stay here! :)"

"Myself, husband, bother (all late 20’s), sister (late teens), and Mom and Dad (50’s) rented the home for a little over a week in mid-June. The home is just as beautiful as the photos suggest. The landscaping and interior are lovely. The location is quiet and has convenient to downtown Victoria and major roads to other areas on the island. The six of us had plenty of space. When we weren’t exploring the island, we spent most of our time on the decks overlooking the water and utilized the canoe several times. Lots of wildlife can be enjoyed from the house; we were lucky enough to see seals, otters, raccoon's, a marmot, lots of heron, and a bald eagle who was fishing just outside the cove (bring binoculars!). Pat was very helpful and lovely to work with. We highly recommend this home."

"The Boathouse is a place unto itself. It is a tranquil, peaceful and quaint. There is no other place where I would be willing to walk outside to get to the bathhouse. Oddly, here it just seems natural. The cottage and the bathhouse were squeaky clean. The chairs in the cottage's library were fantastically comfortable and when combined with the view of the bay made for the perfect place to linger over morning coffee. One of my fondest memories of The Boathouse will always be sipping wine while sitting in rocking chairs on the dock. I would caution those who want to experience this great place to pack lightly. The steps down to the cottage are many, but the thoughtful landings make it less of a problem. Harvey and Jean were wonderful hosts. Thank you, Harvey, for suggesting the Brentwood Pub, for dinner. We ended up eating there three nights and thoroughly enjoyed it each night. Thank you, Jean, for telling Curt about Cathedral Grove on Highway #4. We stopped there on our way back to Nanaimo from Ucluelet and loved it. What a beautiful place! It was a peaceful and special place - just like The Boathouse."

"My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this apartment. It was larger than expected with all the amenities needed. It felt like home away from home. We enjoyed the natural light coming from all the windows and skylights, the nice warmth coming from the gas fireplace, the large wall TV with sound system, all provided with some special treats to welcome us during the Christmas season. The owners were very friendly and welcoming."
