"Our family of six (two parents and four university-aged offspring) absolutely loved our stay in this restored heritage house across from Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. We highly recommend this rental and would happily stay forever.
The house exceeded our expectations, which were high. The graceful rooms are large and airy, with high ceilings and abundant windows. All the lovely character of an Edwardian mini-mansion has been preserved, but of course with the addition of a modern, well-stocked, gourmet kitchen, and three elegant bathrooms. (There is a seemingly endless supply of hot water, I might add -- something that we don't have in our own home.) With two spacious master bedrooms, two elegant single bedrooms, and a library that accommodated a spare bed, each of our 'kids' had their own room.
Our hostess greeted us warmly with a bottle of Italian wine and flowers from the garden and an assortment of tour guides, which we made good use of -including a book about heritage buildings that featured our house.
This property is directly across from Beacon Hill Park, which is centrally located. We never needed a car or public transit. On foot, we explored:
-many beautiful beaches, including those in Beacon Hill Park and along Dallas Road. (Victoria has one of the most beautiful settings in the world, with ocean in every direction.)
-the Legislature Building, the Empress hotel and inner harbour
-Munro's Books and Murchies on Government Street
-Craigdarroch Castle and Government House
-the historic Ross Bay cemetery
-Esquimalt waterfront pathway
-historic buildings of Fairview and James Bay neighbourhoods
The house is only a block or two from the charming Cook Street Village, where we could buy organic produce and enjoy great coffee. (There's a musician named John who sells vegetables at the Marketplace during the day, but performs at the Serious Cafe on Monday evenings. A five-minute conversation with him, and we felt part of the neighbourhood.) Although there are supermarkets a three minute drive away, pretty much everything we needed was available in the Cook Street Village.
We live in Vancouver, which is just a ferry ride away, and as a family we've enjoyed vacations in more distant locations such as San Francisco, New York, etc. But this vacation in Victoria was one of our very best. Victoria offers a combination of historic sites, natural beauty, walkability, and great bookstores that is magical."
