  • Vacation "gem" in Sooke area

"Our family rented this "gem" beach house direct through owner Susan Scott from 10-20 July 2014. This location cannot be beat for sunsets (use west-side patio), full moon rise (viewed from around fire pit), morning sun with coffee (use east-side patio), outside eating (with propane BBQ and roll-out awning for shade if needed), happenstance wildlife viewing (bald eagles, loons, otters, herons etc - bring your binocs), strolls and beachcombing (step through the gate and the lagoon's your oyster - we brought our own kayaks). We visited the Galloping Goose, Sooke potholes, Whiffen Spit and Botanical Beach (at Port Renfrew) and made lasting memories all over. A relaxing, yet energizing vacation. The house has all the services you'd expect (as stated in the listing), all appliances worked fine (our beer and wine was cold quickly, the dishes came out clean as did our laundry, and we fresh-baked blueberry pie, choc-chip cookies, pizza and salmon dinner to perfection). Everything was neat and clean on arrival with sufficient spare linen, towels, cutlery, crockery & glassware. Bedrooms, bathrooms and lounge/dining/kitchen areas comfortably accommodated mom, dad, two adult daughters, a granny and one overnight visitor. We appreciated the understated, user-friendly décor (wood, tile, blue & skylights) and the easy-living ambience of the Beach House. We will be back !"

  • Home away from Home

"My family and I traveled to Sooke this month as we are looking at moving there. We decided to stay at Surfside Cottage so we could all stay together (my husband, 3yr old daughter and my parents). The cottage was perfect for us. It became a home away from home as we really looked forward to returning in the evenings. Even going so far as being glad when dinner plans fell through so we could stay at the cottage by the fire and just relax. We used all three rooms and while we weren't sure what to expect with the "teen room" it worked for us as my parents stayed in that room. It's a small room in the lower level of the house with an outside door and it's own small bathroom. The beds are a little smaller than a normal twin but my father, who is 5'10" fit just fine. The 2 rooms upstairs are large and have plenty of room for luggage. Everything was provided as well as far as kitchen gadgets and dishes. All the beds in the house are extremely comfortable and everything was sparkling clean. It is a bit of a walk from the parking area to the house down a path and it's so worth it. This was all about the view though. We even saw a whale making his way by on our last day. He was so close we could have thrown a rock and hit him. Standing at the living room windows with the fire crackling, watching the whale slowly swim by was something we'll remember forever! Although an orca or 2 would have been even better! :) It was relaxing, quiet and peaceful and we appreciated it very much. We will be back once our house sells so we can go house hunting yet again! Thank you Ines!"

  • Wonderful, relaxing piece of paradise.

"What a wonderful place to stay. This cozy home nestled among trees with gorgeous ocean views is a tranquil retreat from the every day hustle and bustle. There is not a bad view any where in this house. From morning coffee with the otters down on the dock to afternoon visits from the seals, fresh crab dinners caught off the dock and evenings watching the sun set from the hot tub. Make for an enjoyable get away. This well appointed home has all the amenities and a full kitchen made for easy living with a great cottage feel. Kingfisher Manor makes you forget about sight seeing and leaving the property. Close enough to Victoria to do excursions but far enough away make you forget about the rest of the world. We can’t say enough about how helpful Tim and Sue were. Any information we needed prior to our stay or during they were just a phone call away. We will definitely be coming back to stay here again. Maybe next time we will actually leave the property long enought to go explore this side of East Sooke Park. Many thanks S&K."

  • Our stay at the Sooke River Cottage was nothing short of amazing.

"As soon as we stepped onto this property, our breath was truly taken away. The outside of the cottage has a spanning yard space and a wraparound deck that is fitted with a picnic table, a barbecue, some lounge chairs and even a hot tub! The far end of the yard has steps that lead down to the Sooke River. We spent many days trekking up and down the river or just sitting near the bank admiring our incredible surroundings. I hesitate calling the Sooke River Cottage a cottage at all because it is more like a dream home! Seriously, Gary and Meredith, I want a copy of the blueprints ;). The house has one master bedroom with a washroom just off of it, a spacious sitting and dining area and a loft with another bed and sitting area. The kitchen was fully-equipped with everything we could ever need. All we brought along were a couple spices and we were set for a week of good food! The decorating was impeccable and was filled with all kinds of subtle details that made the cottage feel like a real home. I certainly could have gotten used to living there! When we weren't taking advantage of the amazing home and yard, we ventured out into the charming town of Sooke that has all the necessary amenities and some very friendly locals. If you go to the Village Foods Market, remember to mention you're a tourist - they give you a discount! We also found an off sale liquor store called Buffy's which we used when the provincial liquor board store was closed. The cottage was about an hour's drive from Victoria, and we enjoyed doing some sightseeing there as well. One of my favourite things about the trip was visiting the Sooke River Potholes. It was only 1.5 kilometres from the cottage, and we were pleased with all the hiking we got to do there. We spent almost an entire day at the Potholes, hiking around, swimming, and just enjoying the scenery. It's a picture perfect place that is just steps away from the cottage - what could be better? For beach-goers, we were about a 30-40 minute drive from the Juan de Fuca straight/ West Coast. We visited the popular French Beach, but my favourite spot was Sandcut Beach. It wasn't as busy, had a small hike from the parking lot to the beach, and we spent an entire day going up and down the beach enjoying the mountain view - fantastic! Our stay in Sooke was truly phenomenal. Gary and Meredith were amazing hosts who were incredibly welcoming and kind. I hope we will be able to return again soon. You gotta stay here! :)"
