  • beautiful spot, relaxing getaway

"we stayed at starfish hill for two weeks in June 2014. amazing things about the property: - pet friendly - we brought our two dogs with us and they had a blast in the ocean and running around the property. the cottage is FAR from a main road so we weren't worried about them at all. - very few bugs - i really hate mosquitos and we found that being by the river/ocean really helped with this. there was often a lovely breeze keeping things nice and fresh. - close to "civilization" - being at this cottage you feel away from it all, but bridgewater is a 15 minute drive away for groceries, drug stores, some restaurants. traveling with a small baby, it was great to be so close to amenities if we needed them. - the cottage itself obviously! - the furnishings are beautiful, the view is even better. we loved making fires in the evenings and sitting out on the deck for breakfasts. - the setup - this cottage stocks almost everything you need! lots of towels, clean sheets on the bed, lots of dishes and glasses, full size fridge and great having a washer and dryer. i loved hanging my clothes on the line to dry, everything was so fresh and crisp! - no TV, but great WIFI - i loved not having a tv. we had an iPad and when my husband HAD to watch baseball games, he got a great connection through the wifi and could watch anything on his iPad. - the owners and caretakers - all fabulous! we had a small problem with the deck umbrella and a gentleman came the very next day and fixed it. great communication. - anyone with kids - they have a great setup for kids. there was a pack n play waiting for me, there are fun bunk beds, and they have a ton of great toys in the shed for older kids to play with. we are already talking about our next visit to starfish hill!"

  • A Welcome Retreat

"My wife and kids and I moved to Nova Scotia from British Columbia, and chose Shirley's home for a month while we searched for permanent housing in the Halifax area. Her home was always a very refreshing, peaceful and relaxing place to come back to everyday after our housing search. Our lovely host respected our privacy while also showing herself to be interested in us and our kids, and was very welcoming towards our family overall. She was very helpful with providing information regarding various details of the region, and even went out of her way to make some special and unique accommodations for us while we were staying in the suite. We were sorry to leave Shirley's place, and would happily return for another visit. We found Shirley herself to be very gracious and hospitable, and also quite thoughtful about humanity as a whole."

  • Fabulous place to stay

"This house was everything we wanted for a great vacation lots of room inside and out. Very clean, comfortable, great fireplace, big comfy living room and kitchen to mention a few, a porch in front and great private side deck plus a wonderful stream in the woods with a deck and fire pit to enjoy, picnic, BBQ or just relax and read a book (there was a nice selection). Oh and the beds were really comfy. Right off a main road but with a long driveway so you were not bothered by road noise, lovely grounds to enjoy and play. Also just a mile from Chester and easy to get to all places from there whether Lunenberg or Halifax, very accessible to great restaurants, stores and fun. The owners (really nice people) gave us great info on things to do with lots of pamphlets from all over, whale watching, farmers markets, beaches, coves nearby and far, light houses and Bay of Fundy, museums and all. We really enjoyed our stay and would come back again at any time. Great place for a family or a group of friends lots of privacy but very accessible to all of the beauty of NS."

  • Four Weeks in Paradise

"We spent one week at the cottage back in 2011 so when I had the chance to spend my sabbatical of 4 weeks there I jumped at the idea. It was the perfect place to spend an extended time away to relax, renew, and rejuvenate ourselves. We enjoyed waking up each morning and spending time on the porch drinking coffee while we watched the constant parade of seabirds going here and there. We saw new ones we did not know existed which as a family of auks (murres) with their little white chests as they would dive underneath the water searching for food. We saw other birds that are not seabirds also, such as two bald eagles and an osprey. We saw a seal out in the bay twice as he swam here and there. It was a wonderful place to relax and enjoy nature. The cottage does not have television or the internet which was also great. For four weeks we never heard a negative news story about wars or strife or world problems. We listened to a station in French on the radio so that we heard a variety of music in both English and French but could not understand anything the announcers would say. Having a break from the media was great in that it allowed me to read 6 books while I was there also, something I need to do more often but do not seem to find the time while at home. We cooked in the well-supplied kitchen daily and got the hang of sorting out the trash for recycling, which is something that Nova Scotia leads Canada in and beats most of the US in doing. It was no problem, just something that we did since that is the way that people live in Nova Scotia. We got our seafood at the nearby Nautical Seafoods, just up the hill from the cottage and enjoyed scallops on a regular basis. We shopped the Saturday Market in Annapolis Royal each week and drove to the Wednesday Market in Kentville on three different Wednesdays. We looked around the area and took day trips here and there exploring the Acadian Coast and the Annapolis Valley. The farthest from the cottage we went was for a night away on Cape Breton Island where we attended a Ceilidh and had some fabulous chowder. Otherwise, we stayed within 100 kilometers of the cottage most of the time. I would highly recommend this cottage for anyone who wants peace and quiet and tranquility. It was just what we wanted in order to recharge our emotional batteries."
