  • Gorgeous Location, Perfect Hosts

"My husband and I and another couple stayed at Sugar Shack for a week starting on January 31, 2015. We rented a car, which I recommend if you want to see a lot of the island, but as others have commented, be prepared to drive on the "wrong" side of the road and expect some bumpy rides. If you just want to chill out and enjoy the beauty of the setting, you really don't need one. Dickenson Bay is a easy walk away and some of the excursions make a stop at the Sandal's there for pickup and return. We took the circumnavigation catamaran snorkeling tour, which I highly recommend. All the beaches - and there are a ton of them - are public. We have visited several of the Caribbean islands and Antigua stands out as one of the most beautiful. There is a lovely restaurant called Ana's in Dickenson Bay with fabulous views. You can rent an umbrella and two chairs for $20 for the entire day in front of Ana's - quite a bargain. This is a marvelous little strip of beach right next to Sandal's with lots of shade. The parking lot was free and never full. Due to the fact that the wife of the other couple was in a wheelchair, we ate most meals on the deck of the cottage, making extensive use of the great BBQ and also the Jacuzzi. When we had a medical issue one day, Ilse was extremely helpful, making phone calls and offering advice. She is an awesome hostess. We only met Bill at Sundowners's but he was great as well - so friendly and welcoming. The cottage is just as described with good WiFi and TV reception, and we even had maid service twice a week. We enjoyed watching all the birds from the deck and saw several hummingbirds. The grounds are impeccably kept by Gerald, who was wonderful, and most helpful. The phone in the unit and the cell phone were nice little extras, especially as my phone service - Greatcall - did not work in Antigua. If you want to spend a few carefree days in Paradise, I highly recommend this cottage. You will not be disappointed."

"We had a very nice holiday at Villa Kulala. I had been worried about the wind on such an exposed point of land, but there were only 2 days where it was an annoyance. The house is situated and shaped in such a way that the living area is always protected from the wind. The breeze certainly must have helped with keeping the mosquitoes down, as did the lack of rain, because we did not see one. That alone made this vacation so much more pleasant than our previous two villa rentals. Although the snorkelling was not nearly as good as on other islands we have visited, we did see some large rays and lobsters and a slipper lobster which I have never seen before. Because the snorkelling was not all consuming, we did more exploring. The hiking trails were not easy as advertised, but they were an adventure, offering spectacular views of the island. We also spent a number of afternoons at Half Moon Bay, where the waves were substantial enough for body surfing and my son could rent a kayak. One drawback to the Villa was that there were no watersport rentals nearby. Long Bay only rented to their hotel guests. I loved Coles Market. Thank you, Amanda, for recommending that. You can't get fresher! Advice to others: if you don't see what you want, just ask. If it is growing on the property, they will go and cut it for you. Also the Epicurean is really wonderful. Generally the cost of food and drink was not over the top. The shopping and the people made Antigua seem so welcoming. I loved the island! Everyone made good use of the pool table although it was unfortunate that only one cue was in tip-top condition (tips were broken). Nevertheless, this was an excellent attraction. Barbecuing was a challenge. We are spoiled with our gas grills, but the charcoal cookers were in no way protected with a hood to keep heat in. It took a number of days for the guys to get the hang of it. The rooms were excellent and the showers were beautiful! The pool was wonderful. Christiane, who lives nearby, was very accommodating, even arranging a taxi for the final departure. I would recommend this property without any hesitation."

  • A week in paradise

"We spent a glorious week at Marisol over the 2015 New Year holiday. The setting is spectacular and the house is very well furnished and cleaned. We were lucky to meet Valli and her daughter, who overlapped the first few days in the house next door. The were both extremely helpful and very nice people. The garden and views were fabulous. There are several porches that are very pleasant spots to sit and read or just soak in the surroundings. We like to watch birds, and were entertained by hummingbirds, bannanquits, flycatchers, and many others from dawn to dusk. Pleasant breezes kept us cool at night and were never hot during the day. The beach was a few minutes away, just walk down a spectacular garden path and you are there. Excellent swimming beach. A pleasant 30 minute walk takes you to Devil's Bridge National Park, which is on a dramatic peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic, with surf crashing over the rocks. We recommend dinner at the nearby Verandah resort (walk over to reserve at their best restaurant, Nicole's, and get the lobster thermidor!). We explored a lot of the island by rental car, and especially enjoyed Half Moon Bay and a boat ride to Green Island from Harmony Hall (excellent lunch there too). We highly recommend this house as an awesome place to stay at in Antigua."

  • wonderful hideway

"If you want to experience the real Antigua, then the Bamboo Cottage is for you. Joanne is a fantastic host. She met us on arrival with a platter of light snacks. Well appreciated since our flight was 2 hours late! All the beaches and restaurants she mentioned were worth the trip. The cottage is very romantic with the tree frogs at night and finches during the day. Having your own private pool cannot be beaten. Using Titi car rental as recommended is worth it as finding the Cottage the first time would be a challenge due to lack of street signs."
