  • Perfect for us

"My family and I stayed for a week in October and The Beach Shack didn't disappoint. The location is perfect with a stunning sunset view. The cottage was very clean and was fully equipped. Anytime we looked for a kitchen item or bar utensil, we found it. We had no complaints for our entire week! There were four of us and it was the perfect size. The beds and pillows were very comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. It is exactly what it's called, a Beach Shack. It's not new and fancy but if you are looking for a comfortable, affordable place to stay on Staniel, you won't be disappointed. The owner just added a new charcoal grill and since it was off-season and the yacht club was closed for renovation (except the bar), we cooked most of our own meals. The views from the cottage were stunning where you could watch the sunsets, the boats going by or nurse sharks and stingrays swimming by your door. The outdoor space was large with a gazebo, comfortable furniture and a hammock. We found Staniel Cay a couple of years ago and plan to go back at least once a year and we definitely will stay at the Beach Shack again. My only suggestion would be to add some solar outdoor lighting, there were rope lights but we didn't find an extension cord to plug them in. Thank you to the owner for allowing us to use her property."

  • Great Vacation Value

"We have been to the Exumas a dozen times. We believe Hideaway at Palm Bay is the best value on the island. This VRBO is the best value at Palm Bay. (By best value I mean its not the Ritz but it is very, very nice for the price.) The owner is very friendly and knowlegeable about the island. Nice guy to rent from. Villa fronts to the beach and is close to pool and restaurant. The beach is okay (good for fishing and boating). There is a beautiful beach (Jolly Hall) a few hundred yards away. Several restaurants in walking distance. Rent a boat from Minns to tour the harbor. Bring snorkel gear."

  • It really doesn't get any better!

"We had the privilege of staying at Jericho House for the second time. We are already scheming about how we can get back there ASAP! About the house: The house itself has everything. It's very clean, amply supplied with water, towels, etc. The kitchen has a blender, microwave, dishes, pots, pans, spices, - everything needed to cook your own food. The beds are comfy. There's in room air conditioning (we didn't use them much - preferring to open the window and fall asleep to the sound of gentle waves) There's cable TV and Wife for a media fix. And the two screen doors are fantastic - we had them open all day long to let the breeze blow through the place. The surroundings: The real charm of Jericho house, at least for us, is the incredible thing that happens when you walk through the front door. You are immediately confronted with a HUGE window that looks out on the deck and ocean. Its an irresistible invitation to head outside. Once out there, well, Jericho House really begins to show its beauty. The deck - HUGE. The view - incredible! The chairs - plentiful. The ocean - spectacular. Just a few steps from the deck and you are walking on the beach. When we were there we had a nice combination of days with a bit of wave action - and days where the water was completely flat. On the flat days, we snorkelled out by the rocks. Every day we ended up strolling up and down the beach. It is magical! I think that over the course of the week we were there we saw a total of 11 people walking on the beach - it was wonderfully secluded! I should add that the grounds around Jericho House are beautifully kept with coconut trees and other vegetation. We even found a few papayas - but they weren't ripe yet. About Exuma: I can't write the review without also mentioning the charm of the island itself. This island, it's people, its laid back sense of things - all fantastic. While this is a review of Jericho House we have loved: Cocoplum beach at low tide, Tropic of Cancer beach, Santannas, the Fish Fry (on Fridays for sure), Chat 'n Chill, swimming with pigs/ sharks/ sting rays, sand bars in the middle of the ocean, feeding the Iguanas, boat tours of the Cays, a Kalik or two, Staniel Cay, wave surfing on the Atlantic side of Stocking Island, Starfish bay, exploring, the kindness of the Bahamian people, the incredible beaches everywhere, the warm ocean, fish, lobster, - everything! The problem with this review is you might want to go to JH - and take a week we want!"

Exuma Travel Tips

Discover Paradise in Exumas Vacation Rentals

From the capital of George Town to the tiny uninhabited cays, Exumas is a joy to discover. The capital was founded in 1783 by American Loyalists, fleeing the New Republic. It has a fascinating history, full of 17th-century pirates, plantations and its links to both the British and U.S. Navies during World War II and much more. The Tropic of Cancer runs through the city. The chain of cays making up Exumas extends some 130 miles long. Exumas travel could not be easier. To find this delightful area, fly to Exuma International Airport. Famous for its year-round great weather, the Exumas resorts are a perfect escape at any time of year.

Much More Than Just a Beach Vacation

On the main island of Great Exuma, visitors will find the delightful pink and white government building, inspired by buildings on Nassau. This quaint town has gift shops, just two grocery stores and a great straw market, where visitors can buy local handicrafts. There are also excellent pubs and plenty of evening activities. Visitors will find the area around Government Wharf is where the locals head.

Outside of the main town, there are plenty of opportunities to explore. Head to Three Sister Rock where, legend has it, three sisters drowned trying to swim out to meet their lovers. Nearby is a wonderful beach, perfect for some snorkeling. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is a protected environment, and unique for its incredible marine habitat with tropical fish and lobsters. Here, there are several public cays to explore, some of which are only reachable by boat.

A point of interest for many visitors are the stromatolites--a reef-forming algae, and some of the rarest living creatures on earth. Some are thought to be in excess of 2,000 years old and fossils of stromatolites dating back some 3.5 billion years have been found here. Also, at Allan’s Cay visitors will enjoy spotting the iguanas. The Hermitage is the remains of a short-lived cotton plantation, with the remains of the original house and graves dating from the 1700s. A unique experience at Major Cay is swimming with the local pigs. It is also a great place for snorkeling. And a visit to Thunderball Grotto is a must. The Grotto was featured in two James Bond films. This is a great spot for divers as the pristine waters reflect the sun’s rays to give incredible views of the fish beneath. Golf lovers choosing Exumas vacation rentals will enjoy the course designed by Greg Norman at Emerald Bay.

Ideal for Divers and Snorkelers

Exumas resorts are, naturally, ideal for watersports and activities. Visitors can rent a boat or take a charter out to fish or explore the dive sites. There are several caves, such as those at Angelfish Blue Hole or Exuma Land and Sea Park. There are a variety of reefs to explore, such as those at Exuma Land and Sea Park, Pagoda Reef, and Sting Ray Reef, an ideal place to observe a wide range of fish. The list of snorkeling sites is impressive and includes Harbour Buoy, Loaded Barrel Reef, Jolly Hall, Duck Cays, and Bird Cay.

Perfect Properties on Paradise

Exumas vacation rentals offer an incredible array of properties, many just steps from the crystal-clear waters. With exceptional properties, in glorious locations, on a variety of cays, there is the perfect property for everyone. Each comes fully equipped with everything to make a vacation property feel like home. Many come with luxury extras such as cable and satellite TV, CD/DVD players with film and music libraries, BBQs, decks, outdoor showers and even beach towels! Many of these perfect homes also provide a warm welcome for pets.
