"It was private, convenient, bright, cheerful, comfortable & clean! We didn't need to use the a/c because we stayed in November. However, the generator came in handy, since the electricity seemed to go out every couple days. Our only complaint would be that the patio furniture chairs need to be taller to enjoy more of the gorgeous view. The owner is very informative & responded quickly to all of our questions. The caretaker is awesome & is an excellent cook. Everyone on the island is very helpful & friendly and the beaches & restaurants weren't crowded at all. We were already discussing coming back even before we left. We simply loved it!"Guest: Gary Date of Stay: November 2011 Review Submitted: December 5, 2011View listing
"The quaintness of Harbor Island and Dunmoretown cannot be found anywhere in the Bahamas...it is clearly a Southern cousin to New England. Yellow Bird Cottage is found in the heart of Dunmoretown, and is an easy walk from the Ferry Boat. The Cottage is charming with lots of nooks where you can loose yourself in a book: whether it's poolside, on the front porch swing, on the back porch, on the deck overlooking the pool or on one of the comfy settees in the living room. You can stroll into town with it's shops and restaurants or take a golf cart (the preferred method of transportation on the island). There is concierge service which is gracious and responsive. There's even a friendly rooster in the neighbor's yard that provides a perfectly timed "wake-up call"...much to my teenage daughter's dismay. My family had a WONDERFUL time and can't wait to go back."Guest: Island Lover Date of Stay: April 2013 Review Submitted: May 11, 2013View listing
"Harbour Island is a charming place and Back Banyans Cottage was perfect for our family. We were able to walk and enjoy the beautiful beach, or walk in the other direction to the little town. Melissa and her husband, took care of any requests we had (more wineglasses, questions about the island, etc) and were very promp and professional."Guest: Jcoconut Date of Stay: December 2012 Review Submitted: January 4, 2013View listing
"To have a perfect family reunion and birthday celebration we looked for a hideaway and we found the perfect place to celebrate and relax. A fabulous ocean front property with private pink sands beach, large outdoor areas, amazing landscaped garden and additional guest houses to keep privacy. The island and the people are unique and authentic. A great place to be. Hope we will come back soon."Guest: Simone Date of Stay: March 2013 Review Submitted: April 21, 2013View listing
Harbour Island Travel Tips
Tropical Leisure at Harbour Island Vacation Rentals
Harbour Island is rated as one of the Bahamas best beach destinations. That says quite a lot, considering that the Bahamas is a tropical paradise. What sets Harbour Island apart is the three-mile length of the beaches and the unique pink hue of the beach sand. This gives the island an almost ethereal appearance from a distance. The barrier reefs surrounding the island provide safe waters for swimming, snorkeling and diving. With its warm tropical weather, Harbour Island is a year-round destination.
Getting to Harbour Island Resorts
The international airport on Harbour Island is known as North Eleuthera Airport. Commercial flights from Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and Nassau land here. If you are flying in from other parts of North America or Europe, a number of international carriers fly into either Nassau or Miami. From there, you can get a flight connection on to Eleuthera. From the airport, it’s a short 10-minute taxi ride to the boat dock and a further 10-minute boat ride across to Harbour Island.
Once in the Bahamas, you can also get to Harbour Island by using the Bahamas Fast Ferries. From Nassau, you will take the ferry to Spanish Wells, Eleuthera and then on to Harbour island. This is a quick and convenient way to get between the islands. If you are on your own timetable, you can make use of both land and water taxis to get to Harbour Island. Once on the island, the most popular way to get around is to hire a golf buggy.
Private charter flights are available from several airlines based in the Bahamas. When making inquiries, ensure that the company you use is a certified and licensed charter airline. This is a great way to do some aerial sightseeing of the Bahamas.
Harbour Island Travel Attractions
The beaches of Harbour Island are undoubtedly one of its greatest attractions. The crisp pink coral sands and calm turquoise waters certainly paint a picture of paradise. Sun lovers can laze on the beach and check out the scene. In the late afternoon, take yourself along to one of the beachfront restaurants and enjoy a cocktail or two as you watch the sun dip below the horizon. The dining on Harbour Island is legendary. You can enjoy fine dining at upscale restaurants or enjoy a more casual dining experience of local fare at a neighborhood restaurant.
Boats can be chartered and you can enjoy a day out cruising on the calm turquoise waters. Dive operators offer scuba diving on both the inner and outer reefs. One dive site in particular is ranked at one of the world’s best. The dive is called Current Cut Dive and only recommended for advanced divers who are experienced in drift diving. The current flows extremely fast along rock walls that run between Harbour Island and Current Island and it is a thrilling experience. Divers can drift as far as two to three miles in as little as 10 minutes. Snorkeling excursions can easily be arranged on the colorful tropical reefs. Anglers can try their luck surf fishing from the rocks or chartering a boat for a deep sea fishing excursion.
On land, you can browse the many street side stalls in Dunmore for souvenirs and crafts. In Dunmore Town, there are several historical sites that are interesting to visit. The town was well known for its sugar refineries, rum distilleries and ship building in the 1800s. The historic Hill Steps were built from stone hewn by local inhabitants. The Titus Hole is a cave overlooking the bay that is believed to have served as a jail at one point in time.
