Overview of San Salvador Vacation Rentals
Visitors to San Salvador Vacation Rentals
People who travel to San Salvador are those looking for a quieter Caribbean vacation destination. There are several high-quality luxury resorts on the island but it is not as developed as its other Bahamian counterparts.
Popular San Salvador Travel Attractions
The primary attractions of San Salvador are its beautiful beaches. The most well known are Bonefish Bay where Club Med is located. Other popular beaches are Long Beach, Snow Bay and Grotto Beach. A beautiful three-mile beach called East Beach is a great site for snorkeling. Most of the island is fringed with coral reefs which provide protected waters for swimming and snorkeling.
The diving on San Salvador’s reefs is one of its main attractions. High Cay, Low Cay and Middle Cay are popular reef and wreck diving sites. There are also a number of legendary cave diving sites around the island. More advanced dive sites are characterized by walls that go down to a depth of more than 40 feet. There are numerous wrecks that have become artificial reefs and provide for excellent diving. Divers can enjoy fantastic visibility and the comfort of warm tropical waters during their dives. This is part of what makes San Salvador such an attractive diving destination.
There are many historical sites, monuments and museums on the island. San Salvador is believed to be the site where Christopher Columbus first landed in the “New World.” He is believed to have landed in Long Bay on October 12, 1492. Today, you visit a large white cross which was erected in 1965 to commemorate this historic event. Watlings Castle in Sandy Point Estates is now just ruins that hint at former colonial life. The site includes slave quarters, storage buildings, a cook house and the ruins of a plantation mansion. The Farquharson Plantation houses the ruins of a former mansion and prison. The Dixon Lighthouse is the last remaining of its kind in the Bahamas. The lighthouse has been in service since 1887. It is manned by four-hour watches who maintain the hand-operated kerosene lamps. These lamps have the power of 400,000 candles and the light can be seen 19 miles out to sea.
Best Time of Year to Travel to San Salvador Resorts
San Salvador enjoys a year-round warm tropical climate. The seasons are defined by rainfall rather than temperature variations. The heavy rains occur late in the summer season which coincides with the frequency of tropical storms and hurricanes. In general, September and October are considered the low tourist season because of this. In the wintertime, there are occasional showers but these are short-lived and quickly pass. June and July are generally the warmest months, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Centigrade. Humidity can also be quite high at this time of year. It nevertheless remains a popular travel season because it coincides with the northern hemisphere's summer holiday season. The ideal time of year to visit climate-wise is between November and April. The days are still nice and warm but the temperatures are somewhat milder.
Getting to Bahamas Vacation Rentals in San Salvador
San Salvador is located approximately 200 miles southeast of Nassau. There are direct flights between the island and Ft. Lauderdale in Florida that take approximate one hour. Many people choose this option as it saves having to stopover in Nassau. If traveling to specific resorts, there are several private companies that organize charter flights in season from Paris, New York and Miami. If traveling from other parts of the world, you may route via Nassau. In that case, you can get a scheduled flight on one of the local domestic airlines to San Salvador. Private charter companies are reputed to be somewhat more reliable but they do come at premium prices.
