Placencia’s primary attraction is the barrier reef that runs the length of Belize. The second-largest barrier reef in the world, it has spectacular dive sites and is an amazing natural phenomenon. Underwater canyons, walls and coral bommies are home to host of reef fish and marine creatures.

Sailing is a great eco-friendly way to explore the coastline near Placencia. Cruise charters can take you to snorkel on the reefs and explore secluded beaches and cays. Sit back and relax with a cocktail and enjoy cruising the calm tropical waters.

About a half-hour from Placencia is the small village of Monkey River. From there, you can take a leisurely trip upriver spotting wildlife along the way. If you’re fortunate, you could see the shy manatees, green iguana, boa constrictors, crocodiles and wild deer. The local guides are extremely knowledgeable and provide an entertaining narration during the tour. The bird life is abundant and occasionally you can hear the monkeys in the trees above.

To see the Mayan Ruins at Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit, you will need to join a full-day excursion. On it, you can see the partially excavated sites and hear about the ancient mythology from the local guides. It’s an eerie and enchanting experience.

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is about an hour from Placencia. It is the world’s first jaguar sanctuary. Although sightings are rare, touring the sanctuary is still a wonderful experience as you get to see many unique species of plants, animals and birds.

What to Take with You When Staying at Placencia Peninsula Villas

Since it is a tropical destination, you can afford to pack quite light. The essentials are good sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, comfortable shoes and your swimsuit. In general, the clothing is quite casual. Lightweight cotton shirts, shorts and skirts are most suitable for the climate. If you are planning on doing some nature walks or excursions, make sure you have a comfortable pair of walking shoes. Insect repellant is another essential. It’s advisable to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants at night and on jungle tours to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes. Leave valuables such as expensive jewelry at home. If you are keen photographer, pack an extra memory card as you are likely to take loads of photos.

Placencia is a destination that has a year-round warm tropical climate. From May to November, the weather is hot and humid and tropical storms can occur at the end of the season. The summer months are somewhat dryer and run from December to April. The most popular travel period is between December and February which coincides with the dryer weather. Travel during peak season does come at a premium and if you are on a budget, it's worth looking at traveling in mid-season. The low season is during September and October when hurricanes are most likely to occur.
