  • Island fantasy

"Tortola is a special gem of an island set in one of the most beautiful and peaceful island chains in the world. Previous sailing trips in the BVI were a sheer delight, but our stay at the Captain's House was by far the most enchanting week we have spent in the area. Photographs do not do justice to the spectacular views of the Caribbean, Long Bay Beach, and Jost Van Dyke. The villa, set high on a hill, is private, intimate, and cozy. The main house and guest suite are beautifully furnished and decorated with remarkable watercolor artwork reflecting the tone of this island paradise. The open feel of the property invites a comfortable, spacious and graceful comfort for outdoor dining and lounging, and the weather is superb. The outdoor showers are private and offer that magical view. Several excellent restaurants are easily reached, and the beaches are a few minutes away as well, and are pristine, and almost private. My wife and I enjoyed our stay and plan to return. Many thanks to the Captain and his Mate."

  • Don't expect luxury

"If you don't expect luxury and just need a place to hang your hat and sleep off the day's activities, this is a great choice. If you want comfort and luxury - not so much. This is as basic as it can be. The location is beautiful. The photo you see on the page is to the east. They don't show you the view to the north which is the open Caribbean, or to the west which is a beautiful view of Jost Van Dyke. While this is, technically, ocean front, it is not beach front. The property is about 15 feet above the shore line, but in this case the shore is rocks and boulders. You will have to walk about 200 yards to get to beach access. The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks is either soothing or unsettling depending on how high the swells are. I can tell you that some nights the sound was loud enough to wake me - and other nights it lulled me into a peaceful slumber. There is no A/C. You will have to rely completely on ocean breezes and fans. There is no oven (probably a good thing considering the heat they give off), but there is a cook top and microwave. The bed linens are a bit on the scratchy side. If you've had too much sun or have very sensitive skin this can be an issue; otherwise, you should adapt quickly. The outside patio is the best part of this property. Again, it is just the basics, but it where we spent most of our time when we were there. You can sit in the sun or the shade and just watch the world go by. This location is very convenient to some of the best beaches in the BVI, as well as the best dining. Great food and drink are never more than a 10 minute car ride away. One more tiny issue that may be relevant to some travelers - this is not an accessible property. You must go down a narrow and fairly steep staircase. If you have mobility issues, this is not a good choice."

  • BREATHTAKING...

"We just returned from a 2 wk stay in Tortola BVI. There was 8 people (4 couples) in our group. We stayed at the villa for 4 nights. The pictures do not do the home justice. It was breathtaking. The views from the balconies and the inside of the house were incredible. It was booked with the property manager Alberto, and he was amazing. He met us at the airport to drive us to the villa. We arrived at different times, so the first group went to the home to find that Alberto had picked up a few groceries for us as well as some spirts, which were required after the long flight to get there. He waited with our group until the next group arrived and again went to the airport, so that we did not get lost. He had some snacks for us when we arrived from the airport. He is so ver thoughtful. He was available to us 24/7, and advised we could call him anytime that was needed. It was such a wonderful expereince having such a caring and thoughtful person looking after us. He truly made the experience a very positive one. We can hardly wait to return."

  • As near perfect as one can find!

"After a week of chartering a sailboat we were able to spend a week at this marvalous get away. The views and ambiance were spectacular. BVI Village exceeded our expectations in every way. Here we had complete privacy, indoor/outdoor living, and attentive assistance to any questions and requests we had for Burtt and Carole and Lucienne. We will be returning to this idyllic spot."

Tortola Travel Tips

Discover Tortola Vacation Rentals

Known as "nature’s little secret," the British Virgin Islands really are the place for a peaceful vacation to rediscover life’s simple pleasures. As there are no international flights onto the island, Tortola travel is available via a variety of larger Caribbean airports, such as those on Antigua, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas or St. Kitts. Being in the Caribbean, naturally, the weather is just about perfect all year-round. While it is British territory, the currency is the U.S. dollar and most places do take major credit cards. The four main islands are Anegada, Jost van Dyke, Tortola and Virgin Gorda. The largest of these is Tortola.

White Sandy Beaches With a Dark Green Mountain Backdrop

Tortola resorts are near the white sandy beaches, with a back drop of dark green mountains with a sheltered harbor, usually filled with yachts. The island has many safe anchorages in areas, such as Brandywine Bay, Hodge’s Creek, Marina Cay and Trellis Bay. These make it a perfect island for boaters. Beaches with palm trees line the coast. Areas such as Apple Bay, Elizabeth Beach, Long Bay Beach and Smuggler’s Cove are great places for a swim, snorkeling, scuba diving or fishing among the many great activities on offer.

Visitors can learn more about the unique history of the British Virgin Islands at the BVI Folk Museum. Take a tour of Callwood’s Rum Distillery where visitors can learn about the production of the famous local drink before sampling the final result. Explore the ruins of a variety of original buildings here, such as Fort Recovery. Dating from the early 1600s, the Fort probably gets its name from being used as a facility for wounded soldiers. One of the fascinating things about the fort is its location on the beach, instead of the traditional location of high ground. Fort Burt, on the other hand, is located on higher ground yet all that remains of the fort is a solitary cannon, still displayed overlooking the harbor. Take a break from the glorious beaches and head inland into the mountains to visit Sage Mountain National Park, where the vestiges of the primeval rain forest still remain. Along the mountain ridge, discover the villages were local life carries on much as it has for centuries.

The main town is Road Town. Here, visitors will find a great selection of shops selling locally made jewelry, spices, silk screen fabrics and art. There are also excellent restaurants to try the local dishes such as the fresh fish dishes of lobster and conch or spicy goat curries and "Johnny Cakes." Here, visitors may also enjoy a wander through the pergolas and vine-covered paths at O’Neil Botanic Gardens.

Tortola Resorts are Perfect Bases to Discover the British Virgin Islands

Tortola vacation rentals are also ideal bases for exploring the variety of other islands that make up the British Virgin Islands. On these islands, visitors will have a fascinating time exploring the various ruins from the island’s original African and Indian inhabitants as well as the secluded beaches and bays. During the fall and winter months, watch for the whales and dolphins as they make their way past the islands.

To the Infinity Pool and Beyond!

Tortola vacation rentals come in a wide variety of sizes to suit any requirement. Choose from a beautiful villa for two with a hot tub and infinity pool or a luxuriously spacious home to take a large family or group of friends. What is guaranteed is that each home is beautifully decorated and well equipped with everything to make a vacation special. These unique properties have modern conveniences such as DVD players, film and music libraries, stereo systems, and BBQs. Many even include internet access and will welcome pets.
