Recent Jamaica reviews

  • A Jamaican Balm for the Soul

"Back in 1974-76 I taught school in Jamaica for two years, living near Savannah La Mar with my three kids. Many times I have been back, but my most recent trip was truly memorable. My husband and I had grown tired of the noise, too many tourists, and hustle of the North Coast, so we decided to try the South Coast this time because we know it's still unspoiled. We searched the internet and loved seeing the pictures and reviews of Rainbow Tree, so we booked there. We were not disappointed! It's an incredibly beautiful spot, well-maintained, and looks oh so Caribbean, sitting on a bluff above the sea. We were greeted by Laura and Jenny who had prepared a very tasty group of appetizers and drinks for us to enjoy, which we did on the back veranda. Somehow we timed our arrival to just before sundown, so we relaxed with our drinks, watching a picture-perfect sunset, the colors varied from pink to orange to purple, as the sun slipped into the sea. I knew then that our vacation would be filled with good people, good food, nature, and relaxation. Ahhhhh... Each morning we walked up the nearly deserted beach to the fishing village, where brightly-painted boats were pulled up on the beach. If you see anyone, tourist or local, the person will greet you with a smile, but won't intrude on your experience. What a contrast to the hustle of the crowded beaches of the North Coast! Both Laura and Jenny have worked with the owners of Rainbow Tree for many, many years, Laura since it was built 23 years ago—and Jenny for a dozen. What a great tribute to the owners that their staff does not want to leave! What a great tribute to Laura and Jenny, that the owners are happy with them, too! With so many years of experienced staff, you can imagine how smoothly and calmly the place runs. Aman, Laura's husband, is available for transport if you don't have a car. He drove us all the way over to Grange Hill, several hours away, so I could visit my old school. It was so gratifying to be greeted with smiles from several on staff who had been there those many years ago when I taught there. I couldn't stop crying, especially when I reunited with two of my students who teach there now. That's Jamaica, full of beautiful people and beautiful places, all glowing beneath the Caribbean sun. Try Rainbow Tree---the staff is dedicated to making your stay wonderful, the sea is there to salve your soul, and you will come back contented and refreshed."

  • Enjoyed the Palmyra

"The Palmyra is a high end resort that was apparently foreclosed on a few years ago. There are three 10+ story buildings of rooms, but one of the buildings is not finished. The resort appears to be operated by the bank and/or some people who purchased condominiums there. My family stayed in a first floor condo last week. The condo we stayed in (I think it was room 104) was very high end. The ceilings are about 14 feet high, tile floors, granite countertops, nice kitchen, very nice bathrooms, very nice deck overlooking the ocean and the pool. There are several floor to ceiling windows, the condo is fairly spacious and well decorated. The grounds are very well maintained. The beach is great and the pool is great. It was a little creepy at first because we were they only occupants we saw for the first few days, and the interior hallways are not well lit at night. (The resort is gated and guarded.) However, after a few days we settled in and could appreciate the resort better. There were also a few other families as the week went on. I definitely recommend staying in a condo at the Palmyra rather than one of the all inclusive resorts (Hilton, Hyatt, Holiday Inn) nearby. Of the families we met mid week had also stayed at the Hyatt and said that it was obviously not creepily vacant, but was so crowded that they could barely find a place to sit on the beach. At the Palmyra we had a beautiful beach mostly to ourselves the whole week. There are no restaurants at the Palmyra, and I don't think the nearby resorts allow (or at least the financially discourage) non guests from eating there. However, Montego Bay has a lot of very nice restaurants that are reasonably priced and I am much happier that we explored the costal towns rather than just stay at an all inclusive resort. The Palmyra manager we worked with (Judith) was accommodating and helpful. She also recommended a driver named Richard. (You should not plan on renting a car in Jamaica if you are from the US. The roads are much more narrow than we are used to and the drivers driver differently - not just on the other side of the road, but sort of crazy.) However, Richard was a great driver. He was knowledgeable as a tour guide, a safe driver, and very enjoyable to be with. He also consistently steered us to activities and restaurants that we liked. The only thing we did wrong was not bring our own snorkeling gear. We could not rent decent gear there and we would liked to have done more snorkeling."

  • Wow, wow, wow!!!

"We just returned from staying at Seagrapes for 1 week. Before we even left home, we felt well taken care of by the owners, Tony & Sheila. They contacted us via email and phone several times. They arranged our airport transfer to Seagrapes, a man named Norval, who they hand-picked for us. He was fantastic. We used him several more times throughout the week. Upon arrival to the house we were greeted in the driveway by the staff, who had genuine welcoming smiles on their faces. They immediately set the tone of "you're on vacation, let us do the work!" Robbie had drinks ready for us, Laura Lee showed us the house, and Blossom brought fresh towels out to the pool, all within 10 minutes of us arriving. Kurline made us a pasta dish for lunch, and as I pushed away from the table, I realized that it was the first time that I felt TRULY RELAXED while on a vacation. The staff at Seagrapes is PHENOMENAL. I cannot say enough about each individual. Kurline's meals were a treat. The food she made was simply delicious. My children, who usually eat burgers or chicken fingers and french fries while on vacation, gobbled up every meal. Kurline spoke with me on day 2 to find out our likes and dislikes. She made the best steak that I have ever had. It was a pleasure to interact with Robbie and Laura Lee, both of whom have a gentle and kind way about them. Laura Lee noticed that my son's face was sunburned. She went outside and cut fresh aloe and cooled it in the fridge so that we could apply it to his burn. Robbie taught my son how to fold napkins for the table. He took us on a walk to a beautiful cove where we collected shells and sand dollars. George the gardner, was discreet and always had kind words to say about my family. Blossom, discreet in her own way, made sure that our living quarters and laundry were perfect. Tony & Sheila checked in several times during our stay to make sure that we were happy. Tony even met us at the Good Hope Estate and gave us a tour of the amazing property. I am a self proclaimed homebody. Usually by day 3 of a vacation, I've seen it all and I'm ready to go home. NOT this time. I was so sad to leave and cannot wait to return. 1 week was not enough. There was so much for all of us (ages 66, 42, 41, 11, 9, 5) to do on the property... snorkeling on the reef, playing on the beach, kayaking, SUP, the pool, badminton, tennis, basketball, tree swing, hammock, delicious meal after meal, and exploring the property's flora and fauna. PURE BLISS."
