  • The only bad part was having to leave...

"We've been home from our trip to PR for a week, and our week at Villa Altamira is one of the sweetest family memories we'll share for a lifetime. It was me, my husband, a 14 year-old son, and two daughters, 13 and 12. We were in San Juan first for 4 days, and were eager to move to the quiet of Vieques after all the excitement. We were in NO WAY disappointed by the Villa. Annette met us with an open and welcoming smile. The pictures don't do the place justice, and that hardly EVER happens. It's not that the pictures are bad; it's just that pictures can't capture the comfort and ease the place envelopes you with. It's bright and breezy, so clean, warm, and so well stocked. The views are amazing. The pool is beautiful, clean, and just cool enough to be refreshing without making you shiver. The grounds are covered beautifully with fruit trees (be careful though, I tried to pick a lemon and got stung by a bee!), bougainvillea, banana palms, and more. My girls took the upstairs, gleefully pretending it was their college apartment in NYC (goofy girls). My son grabbed the downstairs room, with the gorgeous bathroom (love the sink and tile). It was a little hard to have him so separate at night (as this space can be rented out separately), but we gave him a phone and had him lock the door. He loved having his own "boy" space. That's a great thing about this property, you really do have SO many spaces to just "be." Some of our faves of the house: coquis at night, little geckos and iquanas by day, the landscaping, the hammock, the pool, a well-stocked kitchen, the AC in the rooms (it was HOT!), dining on the back deck watching the sun set on the water, drinks on the high deck, the laundry, and all the beach/snorkel gear for your use. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and after burn lotion, though. Some of our faves on the island: BIO BAY (magical, you must do it!), snorkeling by the Mosquito Pier (we swam with sea turtles), snorkeling off the side of Cayo Afuero (tours not too expensive), Caracas/Red Beach was my #1, Navio was everyone else's, going down to the fishermen's pier to buy dinner from the fresh catch (saw a HUGE puffer fish in the water), COQUI FIRE PIT (Go and eat carnitas, YUM!), all the markets, Al's for drinks, Oh, and the horses, LOVE the horses, everywhere! Thanks for making this little slice of paradise available, John and Karen, and for all the love and work you've put into the place. My daughter was right, it was SO hard to leave."

  • Fun for Everyone!

"I visited Vista Linda with a small group in the spring, and absolutely loved it. It's totally private and the views are spectacular. The grounds are lovely and well kept (complete with fresh fruit and cilantro for picking!), and there are a couple of cars ready for use to take to the beaches, in to town, and to the various horse pastures around the island. I would love to come back with my extended family because it offers something for everyone (plus you don't need to hassle with passports). The main house has an open (but gated and locked at night) first floor, with a pool table and seating for outdoor eating if it's rainy. The grounds are large and enclosed, which is perfect for all of my little cousins to run around while easily supervised from the pool area. The casita is its own, separate house and would be great for my grandparents, so they don't have to climb any stairs, and they'd have a nice view of the pool. For me and my older siblings and cousins, the town offers a lot in terms of restaurants and night life. We had a ton of fun exploring, dancing, and some (very small) gambling. We always felt safe, even late at night. Since most of the people who live on the island travel by horse, you won't encounter drunk drivers. During the day, there are ample markets, horse back riding, snorkeling and scuba diving, and trips to mainland Puerto Rico for hiking in the jungle. We had no trouble communicating with anyone, even as a group of gringos, since just about everyone speaks English fluently. I would like to learn more Spanish for my next visit, more as a matter of principle and being a responsible traveler than anything else, but it's not essential. As far as food goes, I could write an entire review on the restaurants alone. If you're looking for something a little more upscale, check out Tradewinds or El Quenepo. I came in convinced I didn't like seafood, and left a convert. If you want more casual and family-friendly, Duffy's offers a great view of the water (and some pretty good margaritas, too!). Overall an excellent experience. Would recommend for just about any group made up of all ages."

  • very homey and as described

"My family spent a week at Upstairs Casa Jenny and loved it. Bring earplugs or a noise machine if you are sensitive as the roosters do their job first thing! We loved it. Dave was great to deal with and financial transactions were smooth and as expected. Most impressive was Kikito, the property manager. He went out of his way to help us, was available by phone for questions, picked us up at the airport and gave us a driving tour to acclimate. We loved Esperanza and will return again in 2015!"

  • Lovely property with fantastic views!

"My husband and I celebrated our tenth anniversary in this charming rental! Thank you to our hosts Terry and Julie for making us feel so welcome. Our hosts were available to answer all of our questions and even included us in her weekly snorkeling club and yoga class. We were able to go to some snorkeling spots that we never would have found on our own. The unit is immaculate, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The expansive patio is a dream. From the deck we were witness to the coming and going of many sailboats, yachts, and freightors. And to the clip clop of horses hooves as the Esperanza riding company took its tours past the neighborhood. Situated in a nice neighborhood within a short walk to the Malecon and all of the action! I couldn't imagine a better and more affordable place to stay during your holiday on the charming Island de Vieques! Again many thanks to our hosts!"
