  • another fabulous month in paradise

"The Hideaway made my month in St. Thomas this year even more memorable. It's exactly as you see it, and what you can't see are the stars at night, the sunsets, the view from bed across the deck out to the Caribbean. And the quiet, the quiet nights (versus in town at Red Hook!). Just above Secret Harbour, good for a walk down and a swim every afternoon. Jan is a gracious hostess and will help in any way she can if you have any problems or questions. Or join her, she has a busy life, always up to something exciting, and enjoys company. She is always available of you need something. Property location is ideal, near Red Hook and the ferries to St. John and the BVI, restaurants and etc. Hated to leave. Already planning the next escape. I recommend a car on St. Thomas but actually you could do without at the Hideaway. Red Hook and Secret Harbour are close enough to be walkable even given the hills and the road widths. Just be prepared to step off into the bushes! Try the night kayaking at Marriott Frenchman's Cove (you would need a car) or new this year, at St. John Cruz Bay. Fish Tails in Red Hook always good too. Thanks again, Jan!"

  • Great bungalow

"My boyfriend & I stayed at the cottage for a week. The house is small but perfectly accommodates two (great for a couple's getaway). Pros: - Centrally located--a short drive from everything on the island - Screened-in porch with a table and chairs--perfect for evening drinks and meals - Full kitchen, so you can save $ by eating in - On a canal--the dock has a water trampoline and kayaks that you can use for free - There is a shed that has bikes, fishing poles, beach chairs and umbrellas, and snorkel gear for you to use whenever you want - Washer/dryer and clothesline - Air conditioning unit works well and cools the entire space very quickly (we only used it when we slept) Cons: - Bathroom is nice/a good size, but the shower stall is unbearably small; you can't step out of the water to wash yourself, shave your legs, etc. - Ants in the kitchen, though if you've vacationed/lived anywhere else tropical, you know that's kind of unavoidable (they were super tiny and mostly not bothersome, unlike some other places we've been where they are monstrous and terrifying haha) - The guest cottage is (obviously) right behind the main house, and the curtains are pretty sheer. We're not very modest, but wondered on multiple occasions whether the people in the main house could see into the bungalow when we got out of the shower/were getting dressed (probably) - You share everything in the shed with the main house--there were 2 couples staying there while we were in the guest cottage, and on multiple occasions, they took all the beach chairs and umbrellas. (We brought our own snorkel gear, but wouldn't have gotten to use it very often if we were sharing it with them--I think they took it every day) - There's no table/chairs inside, so you have to eat all meals outside--a few times after getting back from a long, hot day, we wished we could eat inside Tips: - Grace Bay is only minutes away and hands down the most beautiful beach I've ever seen. You can snorkel right off the beach and it was virtually deserted almost every time we went - There's a large grocery store close by (IGA I think), but if you stop at one of the smaller stores (there's one on the way to Taylor Bay/Sunset Beach) a lot of the prices are much lower - Our one dining "must do": Las Brisas; the view & food were ridiculous - DEFINITELY need a car; Avis is cheap - Go to the conch museum! - Long Beach is also a must-see Definitely recommend staying here! So worth the (low low) price!"

  • Better Than Our Dreams

"What we read about in the description and reviews and saw in pics when choosing to book this property proved to be accurate, although in reality not fully representative of our experience, which turned out to be far better than our expectations. When you first see the panoramic view of the islands and sea from this mountain side, it takes your breath away. And the great thing is that the thrill of that view never diminishes because it is ever changing in some way, and you get a slightly different perspective from the deck, or the living area, the bedroom, and even the shower. The living space is immaculate, nicely furnished, and a very comfortable bed invites restful sleep, etc. Plus there are so many special touches such as fresh flowers, original art, refreshments and treats upon arrival that make this a wonderfully welcoming place. We been to St. John 7 or 8 times now, and have always preferred staying on the Coral Bay end of the island, but this spot on the mountain above Coral Bay was not only the most beautiful and comfortable of the accommodations that we've had, but turned out really to be the most convenient for getting to all the beaches where we wanted to snorkel, and to the nice mix of restaurants that are there. After our first trip up the mountain road led by our host, we soon realized that we made the right choice. Our host and hostess, who are the property owners and were in the upstairs section, surely must be counted among the most gracious, knowledgeable, helpful, and interesting folk that you could ever hope to meet. While careful to always respect our privacy and solitude, they were quick to respond to any of our requests and questions. And when a couple of unexpected medical issues developed for us, it was especially reassuring to have their support and suggestions which salvaged what would otherwise have been frustrating and disappointing intrusions into our days in paradise. All in all, our experience in this special place was better than we could have dreamed it could be, and fond memories of it will fill our actual dreams for many days and night to come."

  • Ideal

"My wife and I spent 10 extremely peaceful days at Annie's Skyward Cottage in November, just as the islands were preparing for the holidays and start of tourist season. The cottage is tucked into the backside of a dune on the Atlantic Ocean side, buffered from any winds by the dune, palms, and shrubs. The kitchen, a few steps from the cottage, is equipped with everything you need; refrigerator, stove/oven, toaster, microwave, coffee pots, and utensils. The cottage hosts the bedroom, bathroom, and sitting/TV room, and is stocked with many books, from fiction to local (I suggest the "History of an Out Island and its Cays" and "The Long Day Wanes") (and wifi covers the cottage and kitchen if you need a download). The interconnecting deck includes a pair of Adirondack Chairs overlooking the Atlantic and the beach (great place to start the morning). The beach is long and beautiful, quiet, gives up its sea glass, very swim-able, and depending on wind direction, good for SUPping or Surfing. The town is only about 100 yards down a sandy path, the harbor another 50 yards farther, meaning food, drink, bike/cart/boat rentals are steps away. The cottage could not be more ideal for balancing a little peace and quiet, with all the convenience of access to the island's amenities when the mood strikes. Remember to look skyward at night, the stars are beautiful. Thank you Annie for being a great host!"
