  • Beautiful Oasis by the Sea

"To keep things concise, here's a point form breakdown of our experience at La Calanthe in July, 2014: Convenience - A very short drive from the airport, Marigot and Philipsburg! Very conveniently located near two grocery stores and a few decent restaurants. Kim Sha beach is less than 10 minutes by foot but we opted to rent a car from AAA and visit other more beautiful beaches instead. A great location! Safety - Gated and with Coco and Bruno right next door with their sweet dog Chanel, we always felt safe. We always locked up at night just as Coco and Bruno asked. There are lots of gated homes with guard dogs in this neighbourhood so it felt very safe. We did walk the road to Simpson Bay a couple of times but only did so during daylight. Water - Pool was awesome. Huge deck with a variety of loungers etc. Ocean was great for snorkelling and easy to access from the ladder. Watch the currents on windy days as they can become very strong if you're not a solid swimmer. Kitchen - All the amenities we needed as well as a BBQ outside. Oven takes a long time to heat up so try to use the BBQ for all meals. Rooms and Baths - Lovely and clean. Nice linens and frequent changing of towels. Lots of room to spread out in common areas although we rarely stayed indoors except to sleep! Tips - Rent a car as there is so much to see and do on this island and everything is so close relative to what we're used to in Canada! If you like to snorkel check out Little Bay on the Dutch side and Baie Rouge on the French side. Downfalls - Nothing really other than the mosquitos which were quite active during our stay, day and night, inside and outside. There are no screens on the windows or the porch and there is some lush vegetation on-site, so the bugs were a bit of a nuisance. We kept the bedroom and bathroom doors closed all day (a/c on at night only) and used lots of repellant with DEET. We did get many bites regardless but hopefully it's just a result of the rainy season. All in all an impeccable experience. And what a view! Highly recommended for LGBT families as well, given how comfortable we were made to feel."

  • Exceeded All Expectations

"Completely agree with the previous review: this is one of the few times a place turned out to be even better than the photos. Stayed just shy of a week with some friends and it was hard to walk away from the house each day. Amazing views, spacious house, clean, and the pool - the pool is just an incredible addition. We got lots of recommendations from the rental manager and she was very easy to work with, not to mention quick to respond to each inquiry. The property manager was friendly, offered to drive us into town the first night for groceries, and gave us a phone to call him if we needed anything. Being way up on a hill has the advantage of feeling remote from everything - but it was a short drive to anything we needed. You can walk to bars, beach, restaurants in about 20 mins. Just be prepared for a steep hike back up. But any cab driver can take you up for a few dollars. Everything about our stay here was perfect. We will definitely stay at Casa Linda when (not if) we go back."

  • We've returned five times!

"Hope cottage has become our favorite spot in the Caribbean. While my wife can sleep as late as she likes because shutters keep the bedroom dark, I awaken, make coffee and enjoy breakfast and view on the deck next to the private pool. When she gets up we read or play Scrabble until driving a short distance to a beach or Philipsburg. Marigot and Grand Case are a bit further. Hope Cottage is convenient, relaxing, and beautiful. There are many wonderful restaurants near by. The only thing we miss is that before the Westin Hotel was built, Dawn Beach had a wonderful beach bar named Scavenger's. We've recommended it to friends."

  • Jan 2014 Stay

"Very nice condo and terrific location. Booking was handled very efficiently by manager. This was our third annual visit to St Maarten. 2012 we stayed at Alamanda resort in Orient Bay. 2013 we stayed at Sonesta Maho. We liked this one the best. Nice having our family in one upscale unit (2 grown children and a friend). Very convenient to dining. The Sugar Cane restaurant across the street is good for breakfast/lunch. We walked to dinner 3 nights (Temptation (a must), Fig and La Gondola) and drove the easy, low traffic mile to Maho and Puerto Cupecoy 3 other nights. The 7th dinner was at one of our favorites in Orient Bay (le Piment). The grocery store is also very convenient. One thing about the condo not mentioned in the ad is the side exit from the parking lot (keycode needed) that leads to a 100 yd path directly to Mullet Bay Beach. One of the best photo ops on the island is on the bluff overlooking the beach and bay. Also the new causeway bridge is open and really cuts the trip time to the northern part of the island. We hope to return to the island next year and will definitely stay here again if it's available."
