  • Great House, So-So Management

"La Martiniere is a well designed house with stunning views over Orient Bay with St. Barth's in the distance. The deck area by the pool is particularly nice. You can be in the shade no matter what time of day. The beds are comfortable and all the appliances worked well. The plantings around the pool and side of the house are very attractive. Even though the steep, narrow driveway is a bit of a challenge, the house and grounds are definitely five star. We were met promptly on our arrival by Jean-Phillippe from the property managers. He quickly showed us some of the basics: How the safe box works; how to make the metal window guards go up and down, etc. He left quickly without telling us how to work to clothes washer with its French instructions; how to work the various remotes; what the alarm? gadget at the pool was and how it worked; and before we could ask our questions. He said he didn't know about the housekeeping schedule, but would get back to us. He didn't. He also said he'd check on us later in the week. He didn't. The otherwise helpful binder with information about the house and area said the "housekeeper will be in every day except Sunday for a few hours to clean and place fresh linens." On another page it said the housekeeper would come either "every 4th day or so," every other day, or every day except Sunday. We had no housekeeping services. The lead property manager told us that on instructions from the owner there were no housekeeping services during our stay. This is really no big deal, but the written policy needs to be made accurate. More important is that there was mold on the wall in the master bath, a few roaches, and a bunch of dead insects in a corner of the living room. One mosquito repellant device was low on oil. The other was empty. We bought the oil and a third device at the local store, so had little trouble with mosquitos indoors after that. (Pest control must be hard to keep up with on the island, so we know the property managers have a challenge with it.) Finally, we got conjunctivitis there. Given exposure and time of onset, our doctor thinks it might have come from the pool. I hope not, because otherwise, the pool is great. We'd gladly return to La Martiniere if some of the issues (mold, pest management) issues were taken care of and especially if we knew the pool was safe."

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!

"My son and I wanted to find Heaven on earth for my birthday and we found it! He went snorkeling almost every day and found the MOST amazing fish right around the bend. He is a very strong swimmer (a requirement), but he told me about the clown fish, puffer fish, and scads of blue fish. We had a great time going to ALL of the local restaurants: Big Fish, Canoa, Mr. Busby's, and Beau Beau's. They are all amazing. My favorite is getting the pastries at 7AM from the Pier Grocery. All of these things are literally within a 2-5 minute walk. I LOVE this place!!! Of course the BEST part is that the beach is RIGHT there and you can soak in the most beautiful beach and beach sounds you have ever heard in all of your life. So GO and treat yourself!!!"

  • Great location and very private

"Wow! What a great place away from the hustle and bustle of Philipsburg with amazing views of Oyster Pond. Very separate and private 4 bedrooms with 4 baths was great for our party of 9. I was a attending a conference at the Westin (just down the street) where one room was $300+/night (our friends staying at the hotel were jealous!) The house is very updated with a NICE kitchen that is well-stocked. We spent most of our time on the picturesque patio and infinity pool area lounging and having pool-side drinks. 1 minute drive to the nearest beach and beach bars and restaurants on both the French and Dutch sides of Oyster pond. 20 minutes drive to Philipsburg (touristy) and 20 minutes north to the beautiful Orient Beach on the French side (go here!). Stop and get groceries and liquor at the Le Gran Marche (10-15 minute drive). Katie was great to work with; she will help organize rental cars, and Rhonda (on-site) will help with little details, housekeeping, and recommendations. They do provide a cell phone to use to make local reservations, etc. Overall, spectacular villa and a great value! No complaints!"

  • You cannot beat the view or the beach

"My wife and enjoyed Island Mermaid as it is a spectacular condo in an awesome location. The views from the balcony of the passing yachts onto Simpson Bay harbour, hills to the left that remind you of Italy with the colourful villas and a view of the bay all the way to left where you can see the airport. The condo itself is like visiting an art museum, so much eclectic collecting has been done by the owner if it is a rainy day you can still be entertained without leaving. Yes the back alley is another world, nothing but a plus in my mind. If you are new to the caribbean it may be a shock, but for those who know it is a way of life and another experience to enjoy. Roosters and friendly stray dogs provide a nice change form cars and other urban noises and we enjoyed them thoroughly. Walking down the beach to Karaker a converted school bus awesome beach from restaurant was a daily routine if we stayed in Simpson Bay. Not to mention the close proximity to all the restaurants in Simpson Bay made it at ought decision to stay in and cook dinner with a beautiful view from the balcony or head out. So we usually had wine and cheese until sun set and then off to a nice restaurant. Pineapple Petes may have had the best rack of lamb I have ever had. I would absolutely recommend this condo, and if you find anything you don't like stay another week because you are not relaxed enough yet : )"
