  • Best views on St John, cooling breezes, gorgeous home

"We recently returned from a stay at this villa. This was our third St John trip, but our first stay in the Bordeaux Mtn area. I would definitely recommend this villa and/or location. The views were far better than pictured, with cooling mountain breezes. It is very convenient to Maho Bay for snorkeling (where we saw many turtles), and to Coral Bay restaurants and bars, and quick shopping trips. Major shopping trips would still need to go over to Cruz Bay, but the ride is only 20 minutes or so. It also is probably one of the most easily accessible villas in Bordeaux, with a short, level driveway. Absolutely no need for 4 wheel drive on this trip! The villa was very clean, and the kitchen was extremely well provisioned with high end cookware, numerous plates, platters, glasses, bowls, utensils, and gadgets. It also had some aluminum foil, paper products, saran wrap, ziplocs, and S&P already there, which was much appreciated. The rental agency included a welcome basket with cheese, crackers, chips, salsa, fruits, beer, chocolates, milk, water, juices, etc. Bedrooms were all very comfortable with good mattresses, and nice bed linens. Great views from the master bedroom and 2nd floor queen bedroom on their private seating areas (porch). It is an east facing view, so be prepared to have the sun wake you... The showers have garden window(s), and nice quality towels. The villa supplied numerous beach towels, coolers, beach chairs, etc. North shore beaches are very close, as are hiking trails. The living room has 3 large couches and other seating as well, so it will definitely fit 8 people very easily. The decking is expansive and has many deck chairs, and you have good views throughout, with great views at the far end of the deck. It is easy to prepare meals and still converse with people on the deck. The landscaping is professional and very nicely done. There were several papaya trees with ripe fruit, but we didn't try any. The view is just fabulous, although we had some haze for the first few days (which cleared eventually). The hot tub is probably only suited to 4 persons. The pool was cool and refreshing, but seemed smaller than pictured. Nice stereo system with iPod adapter. We only used 3 of the 4 bedrooms, and while we didn't actually see the 4th, I don't know that I would recommend it. It is only accessible by stairs, no view, and no A/C (and not sure it would get a breeze)."

  • Better Than Our Dreams

"What we read about in the description and reviews and saw in pics when choosing to book this property proved to be accurate, although in reality not fully representative of our experience, which turned out to be far better than our expectations. When you first see the panoramic view of the islands and sea from this mountain side, it takes your breath away. And the great thing is that the thrill of that view never diminishes because it is ever changing in some way, and you get a slightly different perspective from the deck, or the living area, the bedroom, and even the shower. The living space is immaculate, nicely furnished, and a very comfortable bed invites restful sleep, etc. Plus there are so many special touches such as fresh flowers, original art, refreshments and treats upon arrival that make this a wonderfully welcoming place. We been to St. John 7 or 8 times now, and have always preferred staying on the Coral Bay end of the island, but this spot on the mountain above Coral Bay was not only the most beautiful and comfortable of the accommodations that we've had, but turned out really to be the most convenient for getting to all the beaches where we wanted to snorkel, and to the nice mix of restaurants that are there. After our first trip up the mountain road led by our host, we soon realized that we made the right choice. Our host and hostess, who are the property owners and were in the upstairs section, surely must be counted among the most gracious, knowledgeable, helpful, and interesting folk that you could ever hope to meet. While careful to always respect our privacy and solitude, they were quick to respond to any of our requests and questions. And when a couple of unexpected medical issues developed for us, it was especially reassuring to have their support and suggestions which salvaged what would otherwise have been frustrating and disappointing intrusions into our days in paradise. All in all, our experience in this special place was better than we could have dreamed it could be, and fond memories of it will fill our actual dreams for many days and night to come."

  • Tranquility

"This was our home for the 1st 6 nights of our recent anniversary trip. A newer 1 room cottage up on Bordeaux Mountain. I was going for high-up, “one particular harbor” views and quiet for this trip, but still close to the north shore and Coral Bay. Sea Cottage did not disappoint. 1 room house with bed, living room and kitchen in the same main area with a nice size bathroom with outside shower. Nice covered decks with hammock, small table and a few chairs. No AC here which was a concern for me but the temp was great day and night with nice breezes, in fact we had to close 1 of the sliders at night and use a blanket. I was also concerned about bugs way up there but only 1 night did we have mosquitos and it wasn’t anything a little deet and burn coils didn’t fix. We did have some critters such as your normal lizards, hermit crabs scurring about, small tree frogs (1 of which joined me in the shower one evening), and a goat on the stairs 1 morning. The sounds of the jungle at night lulled us to sleep. Surprisingly no creatures or bugs were in the house. Monika and Jorge own this cottage which is above their villa, couldn’t see or hear them, the jungle is that thick. It’s evident they put their heart and soul into the place. A nice touch was the iPod she provided full of good music, we especially enjoyed their Brazilian play lists. She makes peace flags and sells them out of the Brazilian store in Cocoloba plaza, a string of small, colorful flags that my wife loved. She was all out but promised to make some and mail to us. It arrived 3 days after we got home, nice touch. The road was paved all but the last 75 yards, it was bumpy but didn’t bother us, we’ve had worse. 10 minutes to Maho or Coral Bay, 15 minutes to Salt Pond or Tourist Trap, maybe 20 minutes to Cruz Bay. We loved the location and plan to stay in this area or Mamey/Ajax peak next trip. Perfect for 2 people who want a “wow” view, don’t need a lot of space, and want peaceful quiet. Thank you very much Monika for you wonderful hospitality!"

  • Treehouse Bungalow

"One with nature -- what a cool little cottage in the jungle of St John! We didn't even need to break out our sound machine, as the birds and wind gave us pleasant background sounds. Our 3 young children loved exploring and found hermit crabs, lizards, critters, flowers, vines, the list goes on and on. Being in the middle of the forest was just what we wanted to jump start our trip. Jay and Viki are perfect hosts and it was obvious that our comfort was a priority. The place was spotless and had just what we needed in terms of kitchen supplies, etc. We would love to return!"
