  • Loved our first stay at St John Island

"Our family of 12, grandparents, children, spouses, and grandchildren settled into the house very quickly. We were taken back by the beautiful view from the balcony off the back of the house. The view was spectacular. We spent many evenings sitting outside enjoying the island breeze and view. The house was well laid out and allowed us room to spread out. The drive up to house was steep and the switchbacks took us a couple trips to master, but were not difficult. We traveled to a number of beaches, St Thomas to sightsee and shop, and dined at local restaurants. We also found the kitchen more than adequate for a large family and the dining room wonderful for family meals. The beach chairs and towels were very welcome for beach going. We had a few minor problems with the house, but the property manager had maintenance people there quickly so the problems were of little bother. The property manager was very helpful in showing us details of the house operation and provided a detailed book of activities, instructions, and helpful hints. Very well thought out and a welcome indeed. The owners were very nice and corresponded with us by email prior to our arrival answering questions and making suggestions to guide our stay. We would not have known what to bring or what was available locally had they not been so gracious. This was a trip that will be remembered for many years by young and old. We will be back."

  • Lovely Private Retreat

"We found Pelican House online and wondered if it could be as wonderful as it looked online. We telephoned with endless questions so warmly and willingly answered by Nancy & Jason. That certainly invoked confidence. We were well instructed what to expect upon arrival to ST Thomas, how to ferry to ST John & where to meet them after we picked up our jeep. How nice to make that journey knowing that after we met, we would be escorted to the house to ensure we would find the home easily. So, how did we feel upon viewing this location that we hoped would be good? IT SURPASSED OUR EXPECTATIONS!!! We were promptly given the tour of our space and amenities. Few places are as good as advertised but how wonderful to see our spectacular view, and numerous spaces available to fit the mood. There is an amazing gazebo with comfortable furniture that is a space I can still close my eyes and imagine myself at. A separate outdoor deck for lounging, dining & grilling are at your disposal. Or simply walk down the steps to your private beach with chairs, kayaks, life vets. You can swim, snorkel, kayak or do nothing. The sea grape trees give shade to such a lovely spot. At the house there is also a screened living/dining space that was so comfortable. Two bedrooms but it was just my husband and myself so we chose the bedroom facing the water, standing up each day to the glory of our view and sleeping to the sounds of the waves. The kitchen is equipped with all you need but if you need something just ask. Soda, water and a bottle of rum was a nice gift to get us started on our vacation! Noodles to swim with, extra suntan lotion, beach towels, folding beach chairs to take around the island all there for your use. We covered the island with our jeep and went to so many of the beautiful beaches each with different attributes and snorkel opportunities. Saw barracuda, puffer, tarpon, mutton snapper, squid, and all the colorful fish you can imagine. Market nearby for emergency but better options/prices in Coral Bay. Went to Annaberg Sugar Plantation Ruins. Interesting and loved the view too. Saw mongoose, deer, iguana. We also took advantage of Jason's services as a boat captain. He met with us and arranged a trip tailored to us. I am extremely sensitive to motion so only did part of the trip but got to see sea stars & sea cucumbers. My husband spent a full day at sea, stops & BVI. He had a blast! Thx Jason & Nancy! Enough? GO! It's private, quiet & beautiful!"

  • Exactly what we'd build.

"We've been visiting St. John since the mid-80's and have rented on every part eventually purchasing a lot on Majestic Mile. Based on our experience we were looking for a villa with down island views above Coral Bay but without the extra drive around the bay since we knew we'd make daily trips to the North Shore beaches and Cruz Bay. We chose Villa Carolina for the huge views - Coral Bay and all the way around to Jost, the vanishing edge pool/patio, the outdoor stone showers and the layout which is ideal for 2 couples. It's on the ridgeline on the uphill side of Majestic Mile. By coincidence it's just east of our lot so we were also looking forward to getting design ideas and a sense of what our views would be. Sharon has done a magnificent job of designing and building a villa that is appropriate for the island terrain and nestled into the side of the ridge (unlike some of recent monstrosities). She took advantage of the views and used local and imported building materials like local "blue bitch" stone and thick Brazilian hardwood French doors. It is a long and difficult building process on St. John so we took notice of all the little details Sharon incorporated into the design, construction and landscaping. There is an auto-opening wrought iron gate at the entrance and although the uphill driveway starts steep the lot flattens and there is a parking pad for multiple Jeeps. In addition to the identical suites on either side of the main room there's a third full suite on the lower level for kids or a third couple. Given the perfect weather and the lack of bugs at this elevation we left the five, arched, double French doors that open to the pool/patio open all the time which makes the entire front of the villa open to the outdoors. The morning sun rising over the BVI floods into the bedrooms and at night we enjoyed the moon and the stars over the SFD Channel. This is a real second home for Sharon and she visits often which means that you aren't staying in a stripped down investment rental, it's Sharon's home and she has furnished and stocked it with the best of everything... Tommy Bahama themed furniture, top quality large and small appliances, tons of cookware and utensils, quality linens, the best patio furniture and all the extras like beach chairs, coolers, etc. Villa Carolina is a gem and Sharon is a delightful owner. We'll be back!"

  • Nice but noisy

"The villa is a very beautiful place, but the construction next door was a complete turnoff. Monday thru Friday starting at 7am workers were very loud, hammers banging, saws, and belt sanders were going until 3 or 4pm. The pool was lovely but you could not enjoy it with all the noise. We hoped for a nice peaceful vacation and all we got was a lot of noise. I wish we were informed of this before we spent all that money. It was really a shame that we could not enjoy the villa we paid for. It is a dream of a house and the pictures are exactally what you see, views and all. We did meet and chat with the owner and was told that other renters had complained of the noise and monies had been refunded. I just wish he had told us of the construction. Before renting this villa just make sure the construction is over. You will totally enjoy it."
