Recent USVI/St. John reviews

  • Great Place

"I should start the review with the negative because there isn’t much. The “town” of Coral Bay is not really a town, but a few widely spaced shops and bars. This is not a problem; just don’t expect to wander through town at night. The other item is even thought the roads on St John are exciting they have nothing on the driveway into Island Horizons. Most of it is paved, but it is easily steeper than anything else I have ever driven on. The house did have a nice flat place to park which helped. For the good: The house was lovely, very clean, comfortable, and stocked with anything we could need. However that was all lost in the truly outstanding feature of the house and that was the view. One of my favorite parts of the day was sitting up on the porch watching the light change over the ocean and the islands. You can easily see down the whole BVI chain. It was outstanding. I think my teenage daughter took half her pictures from the holiday off the porch. After a hard day of hiking or snorkeling there is something to be said for mixing yourself a Pain Killer and stretching out on a lounge chair or the hammock to watch the lights on the islands slowly turn on."

  • Girls' trip to Larimar on St. John in April

"I visited St. John for the first time this April with 2 girlfriends. We stayed at Larimar to have extra room to spread out over 5 nights, and it was perfect! Steve and Lisa greeted us as we got off the ferry, gave us a quick tour of downtown, and drove us up the hill to the condo. They're wonderful!! Everything is exactly as advertised and looks just like the pictures. The rooms were very comfortable, kitchen was perfect for breakfast or late-night snacks, the hammock on the porch and great view were amazing! We didn't use the pool much, but it was nice to have available. We rented a jeep for several days to explore the island. Free parking right in front of the condo was super helpful, as were the beach chairs & towels & cooler which were available at Larimar. We would drive around to different beaches for snorkeling during the day, return to the condo to clean up, and walk into town each night. Perfect location - just a short walk into town, but it was comforting to have the quiet and safety of being up the hill. I would highly recommend Larimar - and St. John, and will absolutely stay there again!! We also took the Bad Kitty catamaran excursion to Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Norman Island. Highly recommend that as well."

  • The Reviews are accurate--great time at the Stonehouse!

"My family of 5 enjoyed 10 nights at The Stonehouse. Excluding the 3rd BR downstairs and around the back, the place is fantastic! Were met at the ferry by a very nice lady from the company that manages the property who helped us grab our provisions at Star Market in Cruz Bay (you can order online and have it waiting for you if you plan well) and took us on the 20-minute drive to Coral Bay. The first step through the LR and kitchen to the view was actually breathtaking. The rotunda is great--2 great wicker couches, a hammock and a DR table we used often. This home is near the top of the mountain so we opened the doors that separate the rotunda and the kitchen/LR and the breeze was great--didn't need A/C. When we did, the top 2 BR's had good, working AC's. Small snafu with the hot water but owner had a plumber there the next day--very responsive and didn't affect our trip at all as the cold water isn't too cold to shower with. The two main BR entrances are off the rotunda. The third BR below was not secured from the wildlife (geckos!)--my teens were taping some screen seems so the geckos wouldn't get it but after a few days they waved the white flag and moved upstairs to the 2nd BR. We kicked my son out and he slept on the provided Aerobed which was fine. As in an earlier post, some attention to a few small things would make this place perfect. Coral Bay location is great--we rented a jeep from Amalie Car Rental at STT (recommend) and took it to a new beach almost every day. We made lunch the night before and packed a backpack cooler with beer, soda and water and we were off. We cooked dinner half the nights and used the gas grill (great) and stovetop--all the tools and pots/pans you need are there. They provide you with cloth napkins--I suggest you get some paper ones. The pool is larger than it appears on the site, and we used it almost everyday post-beach. We lit a few mosquito repellent-type sticks(Murphy's Mosquito Sticks on Amazon--worked great) during Happy Hour in the rotunda, but we over-prepared for the bug situation. Good breezes kept the bugs at bay or we were there during a period of low activity. Didn't run into many bugs at the beaches either. If you're looking for a great 2BR in a quieter area, the Stonehouse is fantastic and we'd rebook it in a heartbeat. Took one star away (would have taken only a 1/2 star away but the site doesn't allow that) for the third BR, but highly recommend it."

  • Great place for views and watching the sunset

"The suite was just as described and as shown in the photos. The view from the balcony is BEAUTIFUL with a panoramic view of the bay and hills, even from the bathroom! You feel like you're on top of the world. My husband and I went back there almost every night during our stay to watch the sunset, which was always incredible. The suite is very tastefully decorated and is equipped with everything you could possibly want. It was also spacious, clean and well maintained, as were the grounds surrounding the villa. The owner was always extremely friendly and helpful in recommending restaurants, bars, and beaches."
