  • Just What the Doctor Ordered

"At times, we need to take a break from the lives we are living, to slow down the pace a notch or two. Resonate for you? Then, look no further. This St. John villa is the balm to soothe your body and soul. Described as a romantic villa, which is most certainly true, this rental is a sensorial delight. Each aesthetic detail of this thoughtfully-decorated home, truly how you feel once you set foot inside, is beyond the advertised pictures. From the art on the walls to the fabric of the armchair upholstery to the cherry wood bathroom paneling, one feels pampered by the owners who take pride in their property, as well as respect you as a renter. The bamboo shades, the rooster-motif light plates, the leather-bound guest books, and the linen tablecloths and napkins pre-set on the dinette table are other special touches. Stocked shelves of varied genres of books and CDs were provided for our entertainment. Clean and well-maintained both inside and out- this villa is so lovely! As for the villa’s surroundings, it is nestled in a hill with magnificent views of lush vegetation. Sitting on the deck whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you will find yourself making friends with nature- looking out for your favorite bird whose visits are second only to those of the precious geckos who carry out their business without ever becoming a nuisance. The flowers and the brain coral sit nearby taking in the view alongside you. The owners of this fine property were most gracious, offering us their private pool as a change from swimming at the beaches. They provided a tome of information about what to do and where to go in the form of a well-organized binder of typed content, flyers, and maps. After perusing the materials they supplied, we found a visit to the ruins of the sugar plantation at Annaberg and a sampling of the conch fritters at a stand nearby most memorable. Beach hopping and hiking were also fun. Although the villa’s kitchen is well-stocked allowing for cooking and eating in which we did during our stay, some favorite meals were had at the Lime Inn and High Tide; the mahi-mahi at these restaurants can’t be beat! If you want to experience an exquisite tasting ice cream-try lavender honey vanilla at the homemade ice cream shop. Savoring my last mouthful, I thought about transporting this otherworldly treat home. I will just have to return along with the friends and family to whom I have recommended this wonderful getaway!"

  • Just What We Were Looking For

"We stayed at New Moon for one week in June. (our first trip without the kids in a while) The cottage was everything we wanted for a getaway. It was fully stocked with everything we needed. I mean, c'mon, they even had a french press for coffee snobs like me. While it isn't really secluded, the vegetation and landscape make it feel like it is. On our arrival, the place was spotless. We rented one of the Jeeps that they had, and Catherine made sure someone was there to pick us up at the ferry dock. He took us to the grocery store in Cruz Bay and then on to the cottage. Catherine was always available to answer any questions we had and to make sure that we got back to the ferry on time on our departure day. We really appreciated how she made us feel at home. I'm an island guy. In fact, someday soon I hope to be one of the locals that you meet in Skinny Legs. When we do meet, feel free to ask me for recommendations on things to do and places to eat. I'll talk your ear off. St John is one of my favorite places. While we were there my wife spent every day in the water with me, despite Jaws having scarred her for life where the ocean is concerned. We saw something new below the surface every day. I love the pace and natural beauty of the island. It was great to come back to the cottage at the end of the day and watch the twilight descend on the valley and the bay. You just can't beat falling asleep with the sea breezes rustling the curtains. Coral Bay is on the quiet side of a quiet island. Nothing is really all that far away from you though. The beaches on the east end and southern side are really close and on some days you'll have them virtually all to yourself. As far as food goes, Miss Lucy's, Oasis, and Skinny Legs all offer good food at reasonable prices and a great atmosphere. Pickles Deli has a good breakfast. Overall, it's great place to make your own adventure."

  • A great private getaway

"Our family really enjoyed staying in this private house at the end, end, end of the road! Everything was clean and maintained well. I've stayed in places on St. John that had a more commanding view because they were higher up the mountain, but this spot is tranquil and still offered a picturesque place to relax with a cup of coffee in the morning on the second-floor deck. That deck is also a nice place to do some stargazing while listening to frogs and other night creatures. There are ruins right in your backyard, if you're willing to climb a bit, but they are totally worth the effort. This house provided plenty of room for a family of four -- we had the parents upstairs, one kid on the futon in the den and another on the pull-out couch. Having two bathrooms was nice, although note there's only one really useful shower. The outdoor shower provides very little privacy; more appropriate for a romantic getaway than a family vacation! :) The outdoor shower is very handy for just rinsing off after a day of hiking or at the beach if you were to do so while still in a swimsuit. Very nice kitchen amenities and an outdoor grill helped for some less-expensive meals cooked at home for a couple of nights. Despite very warm and humid weather, we never felt like we needed air conditioning thanks to the ceiling fans and comfortable breezes coming in the open doors and windows. Be prepared for visiting donkeys and, of course, the ever-present roosters make for some early mornings on the island. But then, you might as well get going early anyway since there is so much to do on St. John. The location was nice and secluded without being too far away from Coral Bay so you have relatively easy access to "town." Once you're stocked up on supplies, the owners provide plenty of coolers, beach towels and other things to help you enjoy your day at the beach or out hiking. While it's nice to be disconnected, we also appreciated the WiFi that was provided so we could upload and back up the many photos we were taking. All-in-all, a great place to call home for awhile. If we returned as a family again, this would be a place we would check on for availability."
