  • Our Winter Escape to Rhumb Runners

"We (a Medicare eligible but far from immobile couple) returned to our hill farm home in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region late Saturday night, Feb. 28, 2015 from a week at Rhumb Runners to find that the brutal, relentless winter we had escaped was still going strong. That week was a wonderful respite and Rhumb Runners, the Coral Bay area and the east end of St. John were what made it so. Perched high above a busy area next to Coral Bay harbor (up 5 switchbacks on a challenging, but paved, road, which our Jeep Wrangler from Cool Breeze rentals was able to handle when dry without resort to 4-wheel drive, absolutely required when the road was wet or in some other situations encountered), Rhumb Runners was ideal for us. Rhumb Runners is private, bright, clean, roomy, airy (no shortage of wind), with exceptional views of the harbor, east end and the BVI beyond, and a nice, very private pool. Chris and Mike were ideal hosts, took care of small problems (e.g., replacing a new, but non-functioning microwave) and interesting company to be with, although after introducing us to the place, they let us have our space to ourselves. Aside from occasional showers (mostly brief downpours in the middle of the night), the weather was good (much better than NH!!!). We had dinner each night at local restaurants, examples: best conch fritters in 18 years BVI and USVI experience at Miss Lucy’s; great grilled yellow snapper escobiche at Concordia; best seared tuna had anywhere at Aqua Bistro. We enjoyed the local beaches: Salt Pond (a hike downhill, uphill back), Round Bay (called Haulover south, uncrowded and steps from your car) and Vie’s at Hansen Bay in the east end (an uncrowded, sandy beach for which a donation of $2.50 per person was requested and happily provided). We also went to Waterlemon Bay beach (requires a level hike of maybe 2/3rds mile in and out, but what was said to be best snorkeling was too far out for swimmers of our level). Driving by other north shore beaches to the west we found that they mostly lacked sun early in the day and became very crowded later. So, to sum up, we had a great week and very much enjoyed our stay at Rhumb Runners, which we highly recommend."

  • You have got to see this for yourself because words (and pictures) do not do this place justice!

"My wife & I, in addition to another couple, just returned from our trip to St John. I had never booked a home through VRBO before and we had never been to the USVI or the Caribbean, let alone to St John. I can honestly say that looking back; I would not change a thing. We booked Skyflower for multiple reasons and I am happy to report that it did not disappoint. From the amazing views, to the beautiful home, to the expansive decks; I fully expect that we will be back and when we do, I no longer need to look for another house to rent. This pleasant experience began when I first contacted the property manager through VRBO to inquire about renting Skyflower for a week. The property manager answered all of our questions and made the process of reserving this home very easy and painless. Since this was my first time renting a home through VRBO, I was a bit nervous about it too, but working with the property manager set me right at ease. His communications were very quick and helpful. When we finally arrived in St John, he met us in town, took us to the house, and was available our entire stay if needed. Once we got to the house, the views took our breath away; you can see quite a bit from this elevation. We all loved the layout of the home too. It provided both couples with great places to gather in the main living area or on the deck, but it also provided ample privacy in the separate master bedroom and in the second master suite on the lower level. This property would work well for a family with a couple of children too. I can only sing praises to Skyflower and our experience staying here. It was very clean, well designed, and well decorated too. It was also great to have access to a washer and dryer during our stay to wash bath towels & beach towels. If you decided to book this home, you will not regret it! My only suggestion would be to pack a few warm clothes in addition to your shorts and flip flops; it can get a bit chilly at night, especially with the breeze on top of Bordeaux Mountain. Personally, I was fine in a t-shirt and shorts, but my wife would usually throw on a light sweater at night along with a pair of sweat pants. Of course, you could always just hop in the hot tub too if you prefer!"

  • Our New Home on St. John

"My wife and I just returned home and we can't wait to return. What a lovely property, and Lee the on-site owner is a most gracious and helpful host. We stayed in the 1-BR apartment (Sugar Bird Nest), and it offered everything we needed and more. Previous tenants have left amenities behind like cooking oil and spices, so make sure you do an inventory before you buy. We left unused sunscreen, Meyer's Rum and some other things so it's a nice "use some/leave some" arrangement. Lee has everything for the beach...towels, beach chairs, coolers, and ice-packs. The view overlooking Pillsbury Sound is fantastic and the large, screened-in balcony makes for a comfortable venue to enjoy morning coffee or for outdoor dining. The Jacuzzi's a nice touch and we were able to use it several times and the gas grill was great for grilling fish. You will need a car, but we were able to use a small 2-WD Yaris from Budget rental car at STT, so don't feel like you have to pay double for a 4-WD Jeep. It was especially nice having a washer/dryer at our disposal as well. We'll remember it for next time so we can pack light. Thank you to Lee for offering such a clean and well-maintained home away from home! We will miss you and Gigi until next time."

  • Paradise Found

"We've been to Stowaway twice now and can't wait for our third visit. It is one of the best places on the Island, with fantastic views from two balconies, pool, parking and close to Cruz Bay, shopping, the car ferry, you name it. Georgia has a caretaker on the Island so you are always able to connect with someone at a moment's notice and Marcia is on top of things via email. Fantastic property for two couples. Brilliant sunsets, gas grill on the lower patio, kitchen fully equipped, dishwasher, washer dryer, all the comforts of home in a remarkable setting. We have found our paradise."
