British Virgin Islands BVI Travel Tips

BVI Sailing and Charter Options

The British Virgin Islands are well known for their optimal sailing and cruising conditions. There are numerous marinas and well maintained ports that offer safe anchorages throughout the year. Many people in the yachting fraternity visit the BVI to take advantage of the great weather and enjoy their favorite pastime – sailing. There are several charter options available including bareboating. Visitors can choose from luxurious motor yachts, catamarans and mono hull keelboats. Some yachts have the capacity to accommodate as many as 10 people in double or twin-sharing cabins.

Most people opt to have a skipper and crew on board so they can simply sit back and relax and not have to worry about navigating routes and weather patterns. Other people simply love sailing and opt for bareboat or private charters where they can get involved with rigging the sails and steering course. Extensive navigation information is available which makes cruising and island hopping a pleasure. For people that may own a yacht in other parts of the world, being able to charter a yacht in the British Virgin Islands offers a great vacation option. For less experienced skippers, the British Virgin Islands offer relatively calm waters where you can hop between islands while always retaining a line of sight to land. Experienced skippers can sail a little further afield and take advantage of the great trade winds.

For families, a charter yacht is a great way to enjoy some island hopping and still have a great family vacation. Everything is self-contained on the yacht and you can drop anchor to snorkel or swim whenever you want. Stocking up on supplies is easy as most ports have supermarkets within a short taxi ride of the marinas.

Seasons to Consider BVI Charters

The British Virgin Islands are located in Caribbean and as such are subject to hurricanes and tropical storms in the rainy season. Hurricane season is considered to run from early June through to late November, with storms occurring most frequently in August and September. These months are naturally not suitable for cruising. The most popular charter season is during the drier months from December through to April. Trade winds provide excellent sailing conditions for most of the year and the sea swell is generally moderate.

Tropical Paradise on British Virgin Islands Vacations

The British Virgin Islands enjoy a year-round warm tropical climate. The calm turquoise waters offer a wide range of activities. Snorkeling and fishing equipment is standard on most yachts. If you are a keen diver then you can request a yacht that has a compressor on board to refill dive tanks and includes the services of a qualified dive master who can show you the island's best dive sites. Many of the yachts are equipped with tender boats so that you can easily go ashore and enjoy some sightseeing. Sometimes it’s great to be able to anchor in a bay and enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants, shop for crafts or souvenirs, or take an afternoon out to visit the museums.

Caribbean Yachts and Cruises in BVI

There are few things as relaxing as sitting on the deck of a yacht in a tropical paradise while sipping on a cocktail or reading a good book. The gentle motion of the sea and the cooling breeze keep you comfortable as you cruise between the different islands. Island hopping is always a great way to explore the British Virgin Islands. Doing so on a yacht saves you time and hassle that would be spent on taxis, ferry crossings and moving from hotel to hotel. You can enjoy a vacation at your own pace.
