  • Peace among the butterflies and birds.

"We live in San Jose and Atenas is one of our favourite places to visit, it is such a gorgeous little town with so much of what makes Costa Rica unique. The cottage is the perfect place to stay. The views are incredible and the floor to ceiling windows mean you can enjoy them from the second you wake until you decide to sleep. On the first stay we spent the entire day on the balcony bird watching and butterfly spotting. The gardens are mature and attract a lot of wildlife so you won't want to go anywhere. The cottage has everything you need for a relaxing visit; fully stocked kitchen, fast wifi, netflix on a massive tv, bath to properly chill out, really comfortable bed - amazing! On the Sunday we spent the day in the hotel grounds as part of the price. You can choose from 3 pools, play tennis, mini-golf or just enjoy a beer and, again, the wildlife. If you are coming to Atenas I 100% recommend you stay in this beautiful property and enjoy the peace and quiet that makes Costa Rica so 'pura vida'! :)"

  • Beyond our expectations!

"From the get go Sam and Roxanne were a pleasure to work with on our first visit to Costa Rica! We are so grateful for the thoroughness and professionalism extended to us! The house is simply gorgeous! So much so that it was hard to leave every day to explore all that Costa Rica has to offer! The design of the house was warm and welcoming and all details well thought out! We enjoyed morning coffee poolside watching birds and butterflies feed on the bananas and the numerous iguana sunning on the roof or driveway. We took advantage of the view offered on top of the guest house each evening to star gaze and enjoy the twinkling lights of outlying towns. The central location of the house made our chosen attractions easy to reach. Sam recommended that we utilize the cell phone and GPS he has available and we are certainly glad we did as most of the roads are unmarked. We ventured to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Poas Volcano and Jaco. We are already making plans for our return and while what we will do this next trip is up in the air, our choice to stay at the Luxury Castle is a definite!"

  • Birdsong truly is PARADISE!!!

"My husband and just visited Costa Rica for the first time and we are so happy that we chose Birdsong as our place to stay. First off, if you are looking for an amazing view of Arenal Volcano, Birdsong has it covered. The open concept interior of the Birds View Suite means that you can see the lake, volcano, and rainforest in one glance. The large sliding windows mean that you can hear the birds at 6am and the howler monkeys in the afternoon. We didn't mind waking up at 7am every day to get up and take advantage of our time in Costa Rica. It was nice that the chef came early so we could have breakfast with the morning sounds, and then head out for the day. Our food at Birdsong was great as well. One night we had a local elderly couple come cook us dinner in the room. It was one of the best meals that we had in CR. They made a full plate of fish, veggies, rice, potatoes, and a mango dessert. Breakfast in the morning filled us up for the day, so we often were able to skip lunch. A previous reviewer commented how there is no oven in the suite. We honestly never even noticed. Most traditional CR food is cooked on a stove top and we were there to embrace the local cuisine. Not only were the property and villa absolutly breathtaking, but the owner Allan was the perfect host. We are outgoing travellers and like to meet new people so we appreciated having coffee with Allan each morning to discuss the days activities. We also appreciated the opportunity to interact with the other visitors if we wanted. Allan was great about asking how much privacy we wanted, and respecting that. We were looking for something adventurous to do one day, and Allan mentioned the hike to Cerro Chato. Boy were we happy we did that. It was tough but the view is worth it! Overall I was extremely pleased with our stay at Birdsong. The villa, view, and host were exactly as advertised on the website. The only disappointing part was having to leave after four days. But we'll be back!!"

  • Wow ... Just Wow ....

"The most obvious way to tell you how great this rental is, is to tell you that we have been back twice already and are planning a third visit. The next most obvious way to sing the praises of Diana's house, is to tell you that we've been motivated by our visit to buy our own property and build a house that steals much of its inspiration from this one. The house overlooks a valley filled with birds, and horses and cows. We wake each morning to a beautiful sunrise, have breakfast overlooking the valley and then make our plans for the day. They mostly involve not doing much -- lazing by the pool or having wine with visiting friends -- but the almost always end with dinner watching the sunset and the lights come up. This house is magical. It's perfect for a couple on a short stay or a long one. The separate casita lets your visiting friends have space of their own. And the nearby town of Atenas is just right for those who want to get away and relax. It isn't a tourist town -- it's filled with real Ticos who have their own lives. Be sure and go to the Farmer's market on Friday's for fresh produce if you are there. In any event, this house is just magic. Jaime, the gardener, and Leticia, the property manager, make it happen in every way you can want. Don't hesitate a moment ... book now. Just not the days we want!"

Vacations in Costa Rica Delve into the Past

The history of Costa Rica dates as far back as the pre-Columbian era. The area was inhabited by natives, even when the Spanish settlers found the land in 1650. Religious uprisings did occur when Monsignor don Esteban Lorenzo de Tristan wanted to erect a parish.
