"Casa Kalumina is a place of unexpected adventures and luxurious silences, of being greeted by name the second time you stop for breakfast at the surf school down the street, and enjoying vegetarian pizza while listening to a live jazz/reggae trio a five-minute stroll from the front door – under a cloudless canopy of a billion stars. If I sound a little over enthusiastic, trust me, I haven't scratched the surface.
We stayed with two other couples and a single friend and each had spacious, private accommodations. It seemed twice as many would be an easy fit with a little communal spirit.
A gorgeous, lush garden ensures absolute privacy. The house is thoughtfully laid out with well-appointed kitchen, bathrooms, and spacious common areas including a breezy covered deck with a seductive hammock secreted over the garage. The beds are comfortable and the furnishings tasteful but practical. Friendly and unobtrusive folks tend to the pool and grounds so everything is always groomed and inviting.
There was never a bit of trash on the huge beach unless you count the thousands of seashells. There were very few other people on the beach. I never noticed any biting insects. About a half-hour walk up the beach is a turtle museum, a yoga studio, and a nice bar/restaurant with fine, spicy Bloody Marys.
Casa Kalumina is a treasure; enjoy it. You will not want to leave. Pura Vida. Pure life!"

"Our group of nine (2 families with boys aged 9 to 16), stayed at the Frijoles Locos apartments for our whole 2 weeks in Costa Rica. Ever since the get-go, Corynne was wonderful in responding to our numerous questions about life in Grande and also the different activities we wanted to take part in.
First off, the setup is the best for either 1 or 2 families. We would each have our own apartment, which were well furnished. AC worked A1, we did a lot of cooking and had everything we needed, beds were super comfortable, Wifi worked awesome for the kids (for when we were not at the beach). The pool was great to relax in after tough day surfing.
We also took in seven days of surf lessons for the kids and the adults. As first time surfers, we were driven to the beach in the great beach taxis in order to catch the best waves. Our master instructor Ian stayed further out with the boys who were catching great waves and had a blast. The parents stayed closer to shore catching smaller but fun waves with either JC, Andreas or Sebastien, all great instructors. Each instructor would share their tricks and by the end of our 2 weeks, we were catching great waves.
Staying above the surf shop was great for us as there was always a friendly face available to answer our questions or help us order some yummy fish and veggies from the local suppliers. The kids would also get a bunch of high fives and smiles as they would come across their surf instructors. The crew at Frijoles Locos really made us feel like we were part of the family. Our youngest grew attached to Loca the dog, who actually stayed a couple of nights with us.
We always felt safe staying at Frijoles and we also had diner at El Huerto and Kike's Place right around the corner, two great options to give us a break from cooking.
If you are looking for a nice quiet surf town with great waves, beautiful sunsets, far from the commercial hustle, this is THE place.
All nine of us are unanimous in saying that this was one of the best vacations we have ever had in such a beautiful part of the world."

"This place on top of a little hill is perfect. The wind is almost always blowing so you get fresh air from the mountain or from the ocean. Just sit on the terrace and enjoy the beautiful garden, watching birds of all kind, butterflies and monkeys going from tree to tree. We even had a porcupine!
Our stay of 3 weeks has been wonderful and regenerating. If you want to stay in a peaceful location and not to far from shops, restaurants and beaches, that's the place to be.
Last but not least, Kai and Ruth are very nice hosts, very friendly and helpful."

"When I say beach front I mean BEACH FRONT! The private beach is only a few yards from the house! We stayed here July 2015 and couldn't have asked for anything better. The house is comfortable and every bedroom has its own bath. We hardly saw anyone on the beach, only surfers out in the water. They do offer surf lessons right in front of the house for a minimal cost which we did and had a blast. Tamarindo is a short walk down the beach and a one minute boat ride across the inlet. The house was clean and kept up. Monkeys inhabit the trees in the front yard which we got to see. The pool is a good size and well maintained. I would totally recommend this location for your Costa Rica getaway! The only negative I would say is that the road in front of the house is less to be desired ( in other words, have good shocks!) but everything else makes up for that!"
