"Our family of 4 stayed here a few weeks ago and had the best vacation ever! The house is beautiful as well as the gardens, very private with the gated front and back entrances. I find that personally, I'd like to rent a home that is stimulating because you WILL be spending a good amount of time relaxing at the house and the outdoor patio is a whole other room, with a recently added ping pong table outside. Playa Grande is a great beach for kids, when tide is out it's rather calm and shallow, tide is in, good for boogie boarding and surfing. My husband delighted in being able to walk out the back and surf. The best break while we were there for longboarders was down towards the Tamarindo end. Another good area is at the other end near Tortugas Restaurant and the inn.
Since we'd never stayed at Playa Grande, we didn't know convenient or inconvenient it would be. We hired a driver to bring us there, but quickly realized a car would be in order, mainly to go back and forth to the grocery store and the restaurants in the town part. However, there is a great mini-mart you can walk to from the house, takes about 3 minutes. We shopped there several times, it's well stocked with a variety of needed items.
There are good restaurant options within very short walking distance. Cafe Materena is 2 houses down, we ate there twice. Good pizza. Great Waltini's is not to be missed, mainly for the fact you can use their pool if you order a drink, or food. My kids got tired of being sandy and not being able to swim, so they loved coming here at the end of the day, while the parents partook in the happy hour specials! The BEST dinner was Cafe Pueblo, the italian restaurant. Literally the best Italian food we've had since Italy. Very small, but they even deliver food!! And you have order Manfred's delicious baked goods!
We did a day trip with Javier of lovingcostarica.com. Highly suggest using him as a guide. Frijoles Locos, the travel concierge, was awesome to work with in arranging everything from surfboards to massages to cars and daytrips!
Oh, and the shells! Had hours of fun looking for the longest augler shell that Annette has a contest for every year. Alas, we couldn't beat the April submissions! The house has a very good library, and we were able to reference shells, birds and animals. Also, lots of summer reading fiction, and games for the kids.
Wonderful vacation, and we'll definitely visit again!"
