"Gato Cansado is a tiny bungalow at the top of a hill in K Section. It's a 15 minute walk to the surf. Small and cozy, this Casita was perfectly functional for my wife and me. If you are looking for luxury, this is not your place. If you have simple tastes you will love it. The fence around the property gives you privacy and the cottage is bordered on three sides by forest, so you will see some wildlife. You’ll have neighbors are close by on one side and you can hear their conversations as they sit by their pool. Gato Cansado’s small soaking pool is refreshing after walking up the steep hill from the beach. We did not contract for the AC, preferring to enjoy the Costa Rican heat after a long, cold New England winter. If you want to go out for dinner you will need some type of transportation. Virginie, the property manager, was responsive and sweet and made our trip hassle free. We would have no hesitation renting Gato Cansado again."

  • Magnificent sunsets

"We traveled with a group of 11, ages 4 through 76. We had plenty of space and comfortable sleeping arrangements. Erika the maid arrived daily at around 8 and cleaned all the rooms and did some laundry. A nightwatchman was there from 6pm until 6am. He maintained the garden, cleaned the pool and hung around the pool deck while we slept. They were both pleasant but spoke no English. The outdoor kitchen and pool deck was our living room for the week, from sun up sun down. We paid $350 for a cook, Andreas. She prepared a great guacamole and salsa for hungry travelers, and had already grocery shopped for the first day's dinner. We sent a menu ideas for the first few days via email, based on the menu available on the beach house website, but this may have been too much detail. Two of us sat with her Sunday morning to develop the menu for the week. She spoke a little English but communication was challenging, and she asked us to be very specific about menu and timing, but offered little guidance. Two of us accompanied her on the one grocery store trip near Tamarindo (we took a taxi). We probably could not have found everything we needed without her! She made some nice meals but I think if we could have communicated more easily, we may have hit upon more of her specialties. The breakfast on the last day, huevos rancheros, was delicious. We have never had someone cook for us and it was a wonderful luxury. Consider suggesting a daily menu of tried and true meals for groups that are the house chef's specialty, and just letting us decide if we want it. Coco Loco bar and restaurant is literally right next door. Tasty drinks, music and a way to meet new people. We could leave the teens at the house to watch the smaller kids while the parents had a a happy hour cocktail - we could see them on the deck from our bar stools! It was about a 10 minute walk to the Flamingo Beach plaza with Marie's restaurant, an ice cream stand, souvenirs, tour operator and convenience store (this is where we shopped for beer). A car is not necessary at this property but I missed having one. There were many spots a few miles up the road, the beach house restaurant to the Shack to a fruit stand, we would have liked to explore. There were no bike rentals so this wasn't an option. A few beat up taxi's hang out outside Maries, but they get expensive since once they take you somewhere, they need to wait for you to finish to bring you home."

  • Perfect Setting, Home, and Owners

"Our rental home was perfect for us. Two bedrooms. We had the girls use the master bedroom because of the extra futons. Both bedrooms had decks, bathrooms, showers, and ACs, which we did use at night. The first night I thought someone was moving furniture in the house, but it was the male howler monkeys making their presence known. They sound like gorillas!! Soooo cute though. Downstairs is spacious with a big dining room table, a living room, and fully supplied kitchen. There was a kitchen bar with two stools. Internet and country phone service was provided by the owner. Internet service was unpredictable. At times, we borrowed the wifi signal from the condos next door but that was spotty as well. I didn't care but my wife and one daughter were frustrated. If Internet or texting is important to you, then it may be worth researching options with your cellular company. I was looking forward to disconnecting from the world, so I did.........except for the occasional Facebook post or sports update. The house is very secured with multiple locks, a fence, security system, and neighboring security guard for condo association, which is where you have pool access. What a nice pool as there is shade and fresh water when you need a break from the beach. I awoke around 600am every morning out of habit. My daughter and I would take a run on the beach or on the roads. The house is a 1 minute walk to the Pelada beach, which is quiet, beautiful and with big waves. Great boogie boarding. Some surfing but there is a lot more surfing on the next beach, to the south, Guiones, which is more than a mile long and has a lot of action going on compared to Pelada beach. There is short trail to connect the two beaches. Groceries. We opted to eat out almost all meals. In hind sight, we should have visited the local vegetable and fruit stand on day one. Fresh fruit for our morning smoothies and veggies for our lunch salads were within minutes but we didn't stop there until day 5. Go there on Day 1! Mark and Paige are top notch owners. Communication during the whole rental agreement process and before/during our stay was exceptional. Eduardo, the local manager, is nearby for any day to day issues, but we had none. Could write more but space is limited. Thank you Paige and Mark! Pura Vida!"

  • Casa Fuego in Playa Negra is the perfect getaway!

"Casa Fuego in Playa Negra was the perfect getaway for our family (my husband and I, our two kids, and my parents). The house slept us all comfortably and we enjoyed beautiful views of Playas Sandy and Negra from the bottom and top floor balconies. The pool and pool area was perfect for hanging out, having a BBQ, swimming and enjoying the sun. We had our own private path to the beach where the whole family was able to surf any time of the day! Jarrod and Meaghan were super accommodating and available for anything we needed. What a relaxing, adventurous few days! Thank you!"
