"Arrived in Playa Chiquita after a 6 1/2 hour drive from SJO airport to the CASAS del CARIBE office. TMobile phone with Google maps worked perfectly. Office closed Sunday, but Olga was waiting, and motioned us to follow. 10K later, we found ourselves in Manzanillo and a traffic jam that rivals the I-45 Gulf freeway: Many buses and cars travel there on weekends. So much for hoping for a quiet, secluded beach! Driving off road, between trees and around parked buses/cars, we got past civilization and reached Suenos de Manzanillo. After receiving a friendly orientation tour and the keys (We tipped $20), we were left alone in paradise.
We immediately stripped and got in the pool. It is plenty big enough for us 4 to swim/splash around. There were two bedrooms, and each had two closets. We unpacked, opened the wine bought 3 hours earlier, and got back in the pool with paper cups of cheer.
It was such a joy to notice the tree branches moving and see monkeys in the treetops almost directly above us. There was no sound- except the weekend music from Maxi's bar, 3 blocks away - until the monkeys began howling the next (and every) morning at 5 AM. (we saw many sloths but only one in our yard.)
It got dark at 6:00. Went to Cool and Calm cafe (as far away from the bar scene as you can get in Manzanillo). Dinner was wonderful, about $25 USD each, with drinks! Andy and Ursula became our friends and favorite cooks/waiters/owners.
Dinner dress was the same everyday- t-shirt, sandals and shorts.
Sunday night got sleepy for us and we were all in bed by 8:30.
Monday started early with howler monkeys as a 5:00 alarm clock. We learned to rise with the dawn, chat quietly for a while, and go back to bed, to rise again at 9:00.
The kitchen was fine, the coffee maker worked. We called when we ran low on drinking water, and more was delivered while we were out. We were aware of the caretakers, Jason and Leticia, but never saw them except when we used their gate to exit and walk into town (2 blocks)- that's the only time we wore clothes. We had plenty of privacy during our wonderful 10 day stay.
We all slipped at least once on the slick tile floor, but no one fell.
We broke one glass (they need plastic).
We spent our time in the patio and pool area, and hardly visited the living room or den. The maid came on Wednesday, waited until we dressed, and we saw no one else.
Poas is a great car rental agency.
We are two married couples, retired teachers."
