  • The Perfect Balance

"My husband and I had the good fortune of renting this beautiful jungle house last winter. We have been vacationing in this area for 14 years and have rented many different houses. Some new and modern, some quaint and typically caribbean. We found this house to be the perfect balance. It is built in the style of the old caribbean houses, with a lot of wood and shuttered windows instead of glass and screens. Even so, it is also very modern. The kitchen has a wonderful layout with plenty of counter space for those who like to cook and you will be working with nice appliances and every imaginable kitchen gadget known to man. There is only one bathroom and that is on the second floor. No problem, the more beer you drink, the more often you have to go up and down the stairs. . . you can actually lose weight if you drink enough:-) But, seriously, the bath is large and very nice, lots of light and mirrors. The tile work is well planned and interesting. The main bedroom has a delightful deck to sit and watch the action of the jungle and river below. I often experienced it "raining iguanas" from that vantage point as the iguanas would fight in the trees and fall into the river. This property has so many iguanas, you will see them every day. The toucans, all types, love to hang out in the lower area of the property near the river and you can watch Kingfishers hunting for fish in the river. Hummingbirds, well, that is another story but if you are lucky, you will witness the nesting, hatching and raising of a hummingbird family. There is a nest in the palm fronds hanging down from the roof. It is located directly in the window of the living room. It is regularly occupied and the mommy birds are not shy. They will give you a show when they feed the babies. O.K., back to the house. The lower level of the house is not screened so sand fleas and mosquitos can be a problem at times. We simply lit one of the little incense coils for bugs in the evening and that took care of that issue. This house is set in a VERY safe neighborhood, the neighbors all know each other and keep an eye out for what is going on around them.We felt very safe during our stay.It is a question of what you want. Do you want to be in a sterile environment, completely removed from the wonders of the jungle? Do you want to be immersed in the jungle with every critter and insect? Or do you want a house that offers a comfortable balance of both? If you want the balance, this is the house for you. ENJOY!"

  • Fabulous Experience!

"We were 3 adults, a 7 year old and a 9 month old. We stayed at Casa del Caribe for 4 nights in June. What an amazing experience! The house is rustic and charming. The lot is surrounded by flowers, fruit, birds, bugs, howler monkeys and vegetation. The neighbors are very close and nice, but they didn't feel close because of the vegetation. The hot water was never used for showers, but it was nice to have to clean the kitchen, etc. The kitchen is well stocked, but we didn't cook. Just used the fridge and coffee pot. I actually slept on the air mattress outside on the upper deck, it was amazing (I had my own mosquito net, recommended if you do this). We felt very safe, the gate to the house locks, the kitchen locks and there is a lockable gate up to the bedrooms. Plenty of lighting throughout the house, including outside. We used the washing machine and spin dryer. Nothing ever really dries in June it's so humid but it was necessary to clean out your swim suits, PJ's and other items. It was a nice perk to have. The water was turned off one night when we got back from our outings and we easily found the breaker box and it was all good. The neighbors were nice. Oscar responded to our questions, however he isn't in town a lot. The cell phone was a nice touch. Our rental car gave us one too so we essentially could have used both to communicate with each other, but we didn't. We couldn't get the Wifi to work, we found the modem and the lights were on. That is all I did to try to get it working, I didn't want internet anyway! The bikes were AWESOME and the stereo was a really nice touch! We were hot, sticky, happy, relaxed and utterly in paradise! Johanna's Soda was very close, we ate there twice. The beach was beautiful and close. Puerto Viejo (2 miles away) proved to be an awesome little town also with a nice beach and plenty of restaurants, shops, etc. We walked to Punta Uva and enjoyed that beach as well. The little store down the road was actually a good size. There is also a place to dump your garbage in between the house and the store. All so convenient. I definitely recommend this experience to anyone!"

  • Quiet Luxury in Puerto

"Geckoes Lodge is absolutely stunning! We stayed seven nights in the one bedroom house, Casa Del Bosque. The Property: The houses are all set apart throughout the lush grounds of the property and you really do feel like you have the place all to yourselves. The landscaping is well cared for but not overly manicured with well placed and beautiful flowers, palms, and tropical trees surrounding the houses. This allows wildlife to be near the houses so you can see howler monkeys, birds and lizards from your patio. Tom and Zoe have managed to strike a wonderful balance between the sterility of some large resorts and the 'carved from the jungle' feel of some cheaper places. The house: The house was immaculate when we arrived. It has just enough space for two to be comfortable and cozy yet not on top of each other should you be rained in. There are hammocks hung for reading in, a comfortable couch and chairs and a dinning table in the living area. The kitchen has a gas cooktop, a full sized fridge and most of the cooking wares and utensils you would need to do about anything. One caveat is the lodge is not directly on the beach rather around 1 Km away so this is not the place for you if you just want to step out of your room and onto the sand. The advantage to this is you are not near the busy and noisy coastal road so you really are secluded and in the quiet of the jungle. I would recommend renting bikes, a scooter, or planning your day around the 30 minute walk into town. The Food: The great thing about having a kitchen on hand is not needing to eat out every meal. To that end, there are several markets in town with a pretty wide selection. We frequently bought fresh fish at Mopri's. There are also many good restaurants in town with an array of choices, we recommend Caribeans at Om Cafe, Lazlo's and Veronica's Cafe. Activities: We recommend the Chocolate tour at Caribeans, Zip-lining with Terradventures, and the Jaguar Rescue Center. All great fun."

  • So Wonderful, We Were Sad to Leave...

"Our family of 6 just spent the New Year holiday at Las Casas and had the experience of a lifetime. The property is breathtaking and extremely well-cared for with more room than we knew what to do with. The photos, though beautiful, do not do it justice. The staff was friendly and gracious and went above and beyond to make our stay absolutely perfect. Our first morning, the caretaker pointed out howler monkeys in the trees, showed us a sleeping sloth and then walked us around the property, sharing the fruit of the many fruit trees, many of which we had never seen or tasted before. Many mornings he cut down coconuts and opened them expertly with his machete so we could enjoy coconut water right out of the coconut! Each morning the housekeeper would have the coffee ready and would prepare a delicious breakfast and one day made us the best Caribbean Chicken for dinner! She was so sweet and wonderful she became part of our family! The buildings/modules were extraordinary. The bedrooms were lovely and comfortable, each with its own terrace and bathroom. The main living module quickly became one of our favorites with a wonderful, well-appointed kitchen, huge dining area, spacious living area with tons of seating and hammocks. This became family central and was ideal for planning our day, relaxing and spending time together. The pool area was another in which we spent much of our time. The pool was beautiful and well-maintained... and always seemed the perfect temperature. This module also had a large, well-appointed kitchen with outdoor grill, another bathroom, huge dining area and spacious living area with lot of seating and hammocks. We didn't spend much time in the game room module, although we always intended to but after a day of activities, dinner and swimming, we were ready to sprawl out in the main living area and relax together before going to bed. However, this module is very well-equipped with ping pong, pool table, foosball, TV and lots of comfortable seating. I can't say enough... It was a true privilege to stay here and the staff made it a very special experience for each of us. The activities, shops and restaurants the property manager recommended were absolutely perfect for our family. And the location was ideal; close to town and beautiful beaches but far enough away to feel like a tropical escape. None of us were ready to leave and were saddened to say goodbye to the amazing staff and stunning property. Until next time!"
