  • A little slice of heaven

"Our stay at RocaMar Villas was one of the standout pleasures of our life. Situated in a small (7 units) gated compound, a very short walk to the beach and surf, this place is actively maintained, and very comfortable. As with any tropical housing, there are the routine issues to contend with (anything allowed to be hung and wet will develop mildew quickly, pay attention to the degree of cleanliness and the closure of all doors/windows to deny unwonted insect visitors, and geckos) any location this close to the equator. The nearby SuperSol mini-mart was able to fulfill most of our needs, though the drive to Jaco ($30USD roundtrip) every few weeks is likely needed. In addition there is a "good humor man," in addition to a man hawking eggs from his truck, and others similarly passing by, just outside the compound, selling fruits, vegetables, ceviche, and breads. The many hours we spent in the chaises under the umbrellas, dunking in the cooler (relatively) water swimming of the swimming pool is a delight. This quiet, private, serene facility is ideal for us with lots of opportunity to read, lounge, walk the beach, body surf, and generally unplug (though there is wi-fi and US TV available, if that's what you want) and unwind. Caveat: If you're looking for glitz, throbbing night life, para-sailing, or any of that sort of activity, they are available a short drive distant, but not locally. There are a few small-ish restaurants nearby (walking distance), and we had a LP gas fired two burner stove on our rooftop rancho, plus a charcoal grill. Speaking of the rancho - this too was a source of great serenity. We started off almost all our days drinking our morning coffees and watching the surfers, the natural beauty, of the view, the pace, the surrounding vegetation (almond trees, mango trees, and more). From our unit it was only a 20 minute beach walk to opportunities to see the monkeys and sloths indigenous to the area. As we said to each other many, many a morning: Thank you, God, for yet another day in paradise! There is a caretaker/maintenance person/font of wisdom and connections with the local area, general go-to person, living on site. The only reason I give it a 4 instead of 5 stars is that though part of the charm of the place is the seclusion, the isolation, they can be downsides as well. None-the-less, I give a hearty endorsement to RocaMar Villas for a once in a lifetime experience, and as proof, we are already making plans to return soon."

  • Great big house close to Jaco.

"Wonderful house in Esterillos Oeste. This house has three large bedrooms and is spacious enough for a big family. We had four in our party. So the house was big for us. Lovely community. Felt Very safe there. About a two minute drive to the beach here. Best place to eat in town was Sin Rival. Prices are decent and the Owner Chris is awesome! We mostly cooked in. The kitchen has everything you need to cook meals. Could use a pan to make cookies . We enjoyed staying here at this house very much. The owners were good communicators. Recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet place but also beautiful."

  • Our Oasis

"My wife and I (and our small dog, Otis) stayed at Apartmentos Iguanas for the month of March. The owners, Marga, Russ and James are great hosts. They went out of their way to make us comfortable. Since I had work to do, having a reliable wi-fi connection was a must, and with only a few brief outages, the service was excellent. When I mentioned to Marga that I wish I had a more comfortable chair, James appeared at our door with the family’s own recliner! When I mentioned that a table or desk on which to work would be nice, Russ helped me build one! With occasional breaks from work, our breezy balcony within sight and earshot of the surf, and surrounded by exotic flora and fauna was the perfect spot for Otis and me to recharge our mental batteries. My wife found yoga classes nearby, un-crowded beaches for her daily runs, and an interesting and varied community where we met our friendly neighbors, ex-pats and locals alike. We wanted a quiet, out-of-the-way place close to the beach to escape the harsh NY winter, and Esterillos Oeste (‘Western Estuary’) - on the Pacific Coast in the Central Time zone - fit the bill. If exploring this stunningly beautiful country is on your list, a rent-car is an expensive must. But if solitude and beautiful, un-crowded beaches is your thing, a car is not needed. Oeste has anything one might need (unless air-conditioned malls are important to you). The local market (Super Sol) has everything from sundries to liquor. A family-run fruit and vegetable stand has delicious locally-grown items. Local fishermen offer delicious catches-of-the-day. Las Almendras, a restaurant with tropical ambiance, serves a delicious and varied menu (including Pad Tai!). The fish tacos at Surf Mi are out of this world, and a cheeseburger so good you won’t miss home. The quaint beachfront hotels serve local dishes like chicken and rice (arroz con pollo), and for breakfast, farm-fresh eggs, rice and beans, and delicious Costa Rican coffee. Shady hammocks are available where you can sip a cold drink, read a book, or drift peacefully into an afternoon nap. Esterillos Oeste is so ideal we did what most travelers just dream about: we bought a small place on an ocean-view hilltop where we plan to live and work during the winter months from now on. Costa Rica is a safe, welcoming oasis where we feel our investment will only gain in value. And, it will be an added plus to have Marga, Russ and James as our neighbors."
