  • Best family vacation ever!

"Kirk and William were so very helpful with all our questions and gave us details about what to expect. The 3 of us, including my son a 6 year old, had the unique experience of a life time. We decided not to rent a car and it was a good decision for us. We were such a part of wildlife with monkeys howling at 5:30 am, parrots yacking, and a beautiful beach filled with surfers just steps away. People came to our door selling fish, bread, etc. We loved the Costa Ricans (Tico's) and the people all around that made our trip so very special. I do highly recommend Casa Bambu. If you want to have a genuine Costa Rican's Jungle experience, Casa Bambu cannot be beat."

  • Loved the atmosphere!

"We shared a week at Casa Arenosa with another couple. Lots of space for everyone to find a place to relax, and wonderful spaces to come together and socialize. As mentioned in most of the reviews, the plunge pool is a welcome treat, and miraculously stays cool even with daily temperatures in the mid 30's. We enjoyed the trails through the Bosque del Cabo area, and had an incredible dinner there on one of our nights. Maureen, the chef, created some amazing dishes, including a delicious rare tuna that we all enjoyed. A highlight for us at Arenosa were the Scarlet Macaws, and we were thrilled as we packed the car to leave when 2 pairs did a fly-over salute together to say good-bye! My only negative comment would be that the description on the website could use some up-dating. A useable grill does not exist, so we had to re-plan meals for the meat that we had brought to grill. There is solar power that runs lights and a refrigerator, so although you are living off-the-grid there really are no inconveniences. We used an unplugged second refrigerator to store dry goods in; but found it to be a poor option with some mold being present. A well sealed cupboard or large lidded plastic bin would have worked much better. The cookware was great, knives not bad, plenty of cutting boards, but limited drinking glasses . . . and those that were there were worn and tired. Nothing for wine, but when we mentioned this the caretaker kindly brought some wine glasses the next day. Mike, the caretaker was busy most of the week, and we never did have an opportunity to meet Cecily who was also busy doing massages. Wi-Fi was reliable and fairly strong . . . a convenience for some, but I really was looking forward to finding this location to be too remote allowing me to test whether I could still spend a week disconnected from the world! All things considered . . . a wonderful spot to enjoy nature and the beach."

  • 6 days of family adventure in paradise

"and our top 6 reasons for why we will be going back to la Cuesta Roja: 1. Family-friendly - my partner and I and our two boys (7 & 9) had an adventure that will never be forgotten! We had no worries about their safety, lots of room to roam and expend energy, days were spent playing in the waves, running up and down the stairs - not as onerous as has been described, very manageable, generally discovering. Great house layout with separate room and bathroom for the kids, though we lived on the covered porch when not down at the beach or exploring the jungle. 2. Wildlife - the howler monkeys hung out one day in the trees beside the house, the 4 scarlet red macaws who returned to "their" tree daily, the lizards, the crabs, the wild horses on the beach across from the house, and all the dogs! Who needs a zoo - just go to la Cuesta Roja! 3. Vista & natural setting - overwhelmingly beautiful, just get in the hammock each morning and pinch yourself - it is real and it is amazing! Beaches to wander, jungle to explore, we paddled on the river and explored the mangroves. The stunning flowers around the property, discovering how pineapples grow, mango trees, banana trees and being able to eat as much coconut as we could! 4. La Cuesta Roja is remote yet so very comfortable - beds, cooking, small fridge, showers & flushing toilets (!), fab solar-powered system - never failed, laundry (!), even an iPod dock for our tunes in the evening!!! Jim has thought of everything. There are even 5-6 pairs of boots and 6 life-jackets as well as 2 boogie boards. 5. Jim was more like a friend than an owner, we really enjoyed our time with him - including a day of fantastic fishing - who catches a sailfish and a rooster fish - we did (well, Jim's expertise did!)!! He was so easy to work with, patiently answered all our Qs before we arrived, was available to us when were on-site and then shared pictures with us after our trip. Jim, you've got friends in Toronto!!! 6. This was a life experience, it is the most talked-about part of our 2wk trip in Costa Rica (surfing lessons in Dominical ranked #2!) and I've shared Jim's web-site link with loads of friends and encouraged them to take their own adventure. We'll be back :-)"
