"Casa de Carroll was great. We stayed for one week and would definitely go back. The home is exactly as shown in the pictures and was a great base for our adventures. Our party included 2 adults and 4 kids (18, 18, 16, 12). The owner and local manager were always responsive to our questions before and during our stay.
We saw monkeys, birds and a horse (in the pasture below the house) on a daily basis. The location was perfect and made excursions to Ojochal, Uvita, Dominical and other areas within easy driving distance. The home is very private....you don't see another house or person while on property. Most evenings were spent in the pool after a long day at the beach or exploring. The house was well equipped and had almost everything we needed (cooking utensils, pool towels, hammocks, hair dryer, etc.). A couple of maintenance issues were addressed quickly by the local manager.
I highly recommend Tito at Uvita360 if you want to rent surf boards. We rented the boards and took them to Playa Hermosa, our favorite beach. Whitewater rafting with Karlos and his son, Ernesto, from Autentico Adventures was a fun day. Osa Canopy Tour was exhilarating. The ATV tour with Diamante Tours was cool. We saw waterfalls and panoramic views that we probably would have missed otherwise. The waterfall at El Pavon is not to be missed (not part of the ATV tour).
Be advised that eating out in Costa Rica is not cheap. I highly recommend eating at the local sodas and buying fruit at the roadside stands ...it will save you A LOT OF MONEY. The local grocery stores were well stocked, too.
Exchange your currency for Costa Rican Colones. For the best exchange rate go to a bank, not the airport currency exchange. Bank = 528 Colones per $1USD v Airport Currency Exchange = 460 Colones per $1USD (13% difference!!). Most local businesses give you 500 Colones....not bad, but exchanging cash currency for Colones at a bank is easy (btw...there is a bank on the top concourse at the SJO airport, don't use the current exchange near baggage claim).
My last piece of advice is be sure to have very detailed driving directions from SJO to Casa de Carroll (GPS even better). We got lost in San Jose and on the way to Jaco. You will need about 1,000 Colones for tolls on Route 27. However, once at Casa de Carroll, you will relax and enjoy. Thank you Jim and Patti for sharing your piece of paradise with us."
