"My wife and I (and our small dog, Otis) stayed at Apartmentos Iguanas for the month of March. The owners, Marga, Russ and James are great hosts. They went out of their way to make us comfortable. Since I had work to do, having a reliable wi-fi connection was a must, and with only a few brief outages, the service was excellent. When I mentioned to Marga that I wish I had a more comfortable chair, James appeared at our door with the family’s own recliner! When I mentioned that a table or desk on which to work would be nice, Russ helped me build one! With occasional breaks from work, our breezy balcony within sight and earshot of the surf, and surrounded by exotic flora and fauna was the perfect spot for Otis and me to recharge our mental batteries. My wife found yoga classes nearby, un-crowded beaches for her daily runs, and an interesting and varied community where we met our friendly neighbors, ex-pats and locals alike.
We wanted a quiet, out-of-the-way place close to the beach to escape the harsh NY winter, and Esterillos Oeste (‘Western Estuary’) - on the Pacific Coast in the Central Time zone - fit the bill. If exploring this stunningly beautiful country is on your list, a rent-car is an expensive must. But if solitude and beautiful, un-crowded beaches is your thing, a car is not needed. Oeste has anything one might need (unless air-conditioned malls are important to you). The local market (Super Sol) has everything from sundries to liquor. A family-run fruit and vegetable stand has delicious locally-grown items. Local fishermen offer delicious catches-of-the-day. Las Almendras, a restaurant with tropical ambiance, serves a delicious and varied menu (including Pad Tai!). The fish tacos at Surf Mi are out of this world, and a cheeseburger so good you won’t miss home. The quaint beachfront hotels serve local dishes like chicken and rice (arroz con pollo), and for breakfast, farm-fresh eggs, rice and beans, and delicious Costa Rican coffee. Shady hammocks are available where you can sip a cold drink, read a book, or drift peacefully into an afternoon nap.
Esterillos Oeste is so ideal we did what most travelers just dream about: we bought a small place on an ocean-view hilltop where we plan to live and work during the winter months from now on. Costa Rica is a safe, welcoming oasis where we feel our investment will only gain in value. And, it will be an added plus to have Marga, Russ and James as our neighbors."
